Google at AI Impact Summit: ‘India is going to have an extraordinary trajectory with AI, and we want to partner’

Google is investing big in India, and it has been made evident at the India AI Impact Summit in Delhi. In a blog post, the global tech giant noted its plans ahead. The post, shared by Google CEO Sundar Pichai, lists Google’s deep collaboration with Indian authorities and the private sector to build an inclusive AI infrastructure.

The central focus of Google’s India plans is a $15 billion investment over the next five years, aimed at establishing foundational AI infrastructure in India. This includes constructing Google’s largest AI data centre hub outside the United States, in Vizag, enhancing computing power for research, startups, and public services. The investment builds on Google’s full-stack approach, supporting everything from cloud services to advanced models like Gemini in India.

Additionally, Google’s Nobel Prize-winning DeepMind is in collaboration with the government of India, working on advancing scientific discovery, empowering students via AI education tools, and applying AI to critical sectors such as agriculture and renewable energy. DeepMind’s involvement signals high-level technical support for national priorities.

DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, who won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry along with his colleague John Jumper for the revolutionary AlphaFold technology, is also in India to attend the AI Impact Summit, where he spoke earlier today on AGI, and DeepMind’s plan to integrate AlphaFold with Gemini.

Google also announced new fibre-optic routes under the America-India Connect project, aimed at increasing the reach, reliability and resilience of digital connectivity between the US, India and multiple locations across the Southern Hemisphere.

In addition, Google has announced two major global challenges with rewards of $30 million each, the AI For Government Innovation Impact Challenge and AI For Science Impact Challenge. The Google Centre of Climate Technology is also working with the office of the Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India to accelerate research and adoption of scalable AI-powered climate solutions.

The blog post also listed other India-centric initiatives, like the partnership with Karmayogi Bharat to accelerate Mission Karmayogi’s vision of building a future-ready civil service. Under this, Google Cloud provides secure and resilient infrastructure for the iGOT Karmayogi platform that supports over 20 million public servants across 800+ districts.

Google also highlighted how its live speech to speech translation erases language barriers by enabling real-time translated conversations in over 70 languages, including 10 Indic languages like Bengali, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.

India, being Google biggest market by user volume, remains on the company’s top priorities, driving inclusive growth and rapid development for a billion plus population.

“At the AI impact summit our message is clear: we believe India is going to have an extraordinary trajectory with AI, and we want to be a partner”, Sundar Pichai has posted.
