The All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi was in an unpleasant situation yesterday when, while speaking at a rally in Nagpada in South Mumbai, a shoe was flung at him during a speech.
A report in The Indian Express has stated that Mr Owaisi has been holding multiple public events under his ‘Tahafuz-e-Shariat’ (preservation of Shariyat) campaign which is aimed at opposing the historic Triple Talaq Bill passed by the NDA government. Mr Owaisi has been opposed to the Triple Talaq Bill claiming it is not supported by Muslims.
The MP was not hurt in the incident. Though he did claim that the shoe hurling has been done at the behest of ‘people who killed Gandhi, Dabholkar and Pansare’. He also claimed that the shoe hurlers are frustrated people who cannot see that the Triple Talaq Bill has not been accepted by the masses in general and Muslims in particular. According to a report in Firstpost, Mr Owaisi also added that he was ‘willing to lay down his life’ for his democratic rights and the shoe hurling has been carried out by people with ‘hate ideologies’.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone-III, Virendra Mishra has said that the police is going through the CCTV footage of the incident and probing the matter.
It should be noted here that Mr Asaduddin Owaisi has been one of the many political leaders who has vocally opposed the Triple Talaq Bill. There were many myths and misrepresentations regarding the bill. The bill was brought by the NDA government to help thousands of Muslim women who get abandoned by their husbands by the unlawful practice. The bill was widely supported by the Muslim women community.
