The ongoing efforts were stalled by a petition filed by Mathew Thomas questioning the validity of Aadhaar act. A total of 22 cases have been referred to the Supreme Court regarding Aadhar. The petitioner has alleged that the Aadhar would violate the privacy of the citizens.
This will be examined in depth by the Supreme Court after it had ruled that privacy is a fundamental right under the constitution in August 2017. The central government is also working on a data protection law to protect the citizens.
