The Amethi District Administration has stopped Congress President Rahul Gandhi from inaugurating a road in Amethi. According to reports, the inauguration of the road from Thauri village to Kotwa village was part of the events planned for Rahul’s two-day visit to his constituency.
The 5.5 km long road connecting the two villages was constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sadak Yojna at the cost of Rs 3.5 crores. BJP District President Uma Shankar Pandey had objected the proposed inaguration and complained to the District Administration. Pandey has reportedly stated that how can Rahul Gandhi inaugurate the road and take credit for it when it was built under the PMGSY and not from Rahul Gandhi’s MPLAD funds. He also added that Rahul is trying to take credit for the government’s work.
A plaque with Rahul Gandhi’s name was already put up at the near the road. The District Administration had put a hold on the inauguration ceremony. According to reports, the district officials have stated that the inaguration cannot be done because the road is still under construction. The District magistrate Ms Shakuntala, however, refused to comment on the issue.
The local Congress leaders have reportedly stated that they will go ahead with the inauguration anyway. But Congress District President Yogendra Mishra also stated that it was not an inauguration and Rahul was only going to take stock of the work done as the project was initiated by him.
Reports state that Sonia Gandhi may also join Rahul during this visit. Sonia is expected to visit her constituency in Rae Bareli after almost two years, but the program might be cancelled due to her health conditions. She was scheduled to visit Rae Bareli in February but her visit was cancelled due to her health issues.
