A 25 year old man named Mohammad Mustak has been arrested and a case under POSCO Act and IPC section 376 (rape) and 307 (attempt to murder) has been registered against him a day after the six year old rape victim from Jagannathpur in Odisha succumbed to her injuries. The child was in a coma after allegedly brutally raped and assaulted by her neighbour, who is believed to have lured her by offering her a chocolate. According to reports, Dr Shyama Kanungo, professor and medical superintendent in the SCB Medical College and Hospital, where the girl was being treated, has stated that she suffered a cardiac arrest and was declared dead after attempts to revive her failed.
The 6-year-old was found in a very critical condition inside a school campus on 21st April and was rushed to Salepur Hospital and later to the SCB Medical college. The girl had reportedly suffered deep injuries on her head, neck, chest and private parts. She had been in a coma since the assault and on was on a ventilator. On Thursday, the emergency officer at the medical college had reportedly declared that the girl was deeply comatose and her chances of survival were dim. A team of 13 doctors from various departments were engaged to provide her treatment but her condition reportedly never improved.
The girl had reportedly gone to purchase biscuits from a nearby shop in her village and never returned home. Her family members and villagers started a frantic search for her and she was later found lying in a pool of blood inside the school campus, she had reportedly no clothes on and blood was oozing from her head and mouth.
However, Salepur station inspector DK Mallik has reportedly stated that since the victim has died a case of Murder will be lodged now on the suspect.
The little girl was reportedly brutally raped then strangulated by the accused. As per reports, the accused, in an attempt to kill her, had also banged her head several times. The family members of the girl have stated that the accused was well known to them and he even joined the villagers in search of the girl after committing the crime
