Mallikarjun Kharge says ‘chaiwala’ could become PM only because Congress ‘preserved democracy’

Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge has stated in a recent event that a chaiwallah (tea seller) like Modi became the Prime Minister only because the Congress has preserved democracy all these years. According to reports, Maharashtra Congress in-charge Kharge made the crass comment after stating that the PM has been asking in each event about what the Congress has done for the country in the last 70 years.

Kharge reportedly also added, “There have been repeated attacks on the character of India Gandhi, Rajiv and Sonia Gandhi. It is a deliberate attack by the BJP. The Congress is a family and we are all its members.” He reportedly further added that Modi speaks about the emergency that happened 43 years back but what about the emergency in the last 4years, farmers are committing suicide, agricultural schemes are failing, farmers are not getting new loans and trade is on a slow track. Kharge was addressing Congress workers at a party event in Mumbai on Sunday when he made these statements.

Kharge is often seen making controversial and derogatory statements towards PM Modi and Bharatiya Janata Party. He is one of the staunch Gandhi-Nehru family loyalists and he makes his disdain towards BJP and PM Modi evident in the parliament too. PM Modi’s humble early life as a tea seller has been mocked earlier by other Congress leaders too. Senior Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar had stated before 2014 election results that a tea seller like Modi can never become the PM, but he can sell tea near the AICC meeting venue. Aiyar has also addressed PM Modi as ‘neech aadmi’ in the past.

Kharge’s statement has drawn several reactions on social media.

Kharge had also stoked controversy earlier when he had stated that there will be ‘rakhtpaat‘ (bloodshed) in the country if the government tries to amend the constitution.
