Unidentified gunmen barged into Mir’s home on Tuesday morning and shot indiscriminately in the house. Mir and his wife were grievously injured in the firing. Mir was rushed to a nearby hospital where the doctors declared him dead on arrival. His wife has also sustained injuries and is currently undergoing treatment.
Mir was in police custody since last two years and was released last month. The police have registered a case under relevant sections of the law and started an investigation to identify the unknown gunmen.
In a statement released a few days ago, Tehreek-e-Hurriyat had claimed that Mir was receiving life threats over the phone. “Since last one month, some unknown people were suspiciously prowling around his house and at times knocking the doors and windows and inquiring about Mir Hafizullah that made the whole family frightened,” a spokesman of TeH had said in the statement.
A couple of months back, another Hurriyat activist was shot dead in Kashmir. The unidentified gunmen shot Hakim-ul-Rehmani from close range in Sopore area of South Kashmir in September this year. The increased attacks on Hurriyat leaders point towards the underlying rift growing between the terrorists and their separatist counterparts.
