Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA from Ghosi constituency in Uttar Pradesh, Atul Rai who recently surrendered in court for a rape case he is accused in might be fresh trouble with a case being registered against him for providing false information in his 2019 Lok Sabha election affidavit.
The FIR was registered by Assistant District Election Officer Shabbir Ahmad after it was found that he had mentioned 13 cases against him in his election affidavit but had a total of 24 cases against him.
The FIR was lodged under different sections of IPC including 177 (furnishing false information), 420 (forgery) besides others.
BJP candidate Harinarain Rajbhar had made the complaint in this regard with the administration.
Atul Rai is also a rape accused who recently surrendered to the court. At the commencement of the first sitting of the 17th Lok Sabha, there was uncertainty whether Rai would turn up for the oath but he didn’t, possibly fearing arrest by the police in the rape case. Rai had absconded since his name first emerged in the kidnapping and rape case. He had not surrendered even when his anticipatory bail pleas were rejected by the courts. The Varanasi court has sentenced him to 14-days judicial custody after he surrendered.
