The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Supremo Mayawati today took to Twitter to announce that the BSP and Samajwadi Party (SP) alliance has broken up.

Ending weeks of speculations, Mayawati said the decision was taken yesterday after the marathon meeting the BSP leaders held in Lucknow.

She added that it is a known fact that BSP had kept all the differences with SP behind while getting into the alliance with SP prior to the 2019 General Elections including the ‘anti-BSP decisions’ the SP government took when it was in power between 2012-2017. Despite all this, the BSP kept their part of the bargain in the alliance, she said.
However, after the Lok Sabha polls debacle, SP’s behaviour towards BSP has made them rethink their alliance. She added that with this kind of attitude of the SP, it will not be possible to defeat the BJP. Hence, keeping in mind the party and the movement, the BSP has decided to cut ties with the SP for all the upcoming polls.
The BSP-SP alliance had been on a rocky turf and things collapsed soon after the results of the election were declared. While Mayawati stood to gain by going from zero seats in UP in 2014 to 10 seats in 2019, Samajwadi Party managed to only retain the 5 seats the party had won in 2014 as well.
