West Bengal: Internet services shut down in North 24 Parganas district after clashes leave 2 dead in Bhatpara

Section 144 was enforced in Bhatpara, North 24 Parganas after clashes between two political groups left two dead and several injured. Law and order situation in Bengal has been constantly deteriorating.

The West Bengal Government has suspended internet services as a precautionary measure in North 24 Paraganas district till Friday midnight following clashes between two groups at Bhatpara.

It was reported on Thursday that two people had died and three were injured as a consequence of the clashes which were said to be between Trinamool and BJP supporters. “The deceased has been identified as Rambabu Shaw and Dharmendra Shaw, while the details of those injured in the incident were yet to be ascertained,” the police officials said.

The clashes mark the continuation of the ever deteriorating law and order situation in West Bengal under Mamata Banerjee. On the 10th of January, a mob of 200 had arrived in trucks at the NRS Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata to attack doctors and interns following the death of Mohammed Sayeed. It had triggered widespread protests and a spate of attacks on medical institutions across the state.

More recently, a former Miss India Universe was attacked by a Muslim mob on her way home. In all these instances, the Police were mute spectators. Prominent Muslims were forced to urge Mamata Banerjee to take harsh action against the criminals because of the common perception that criminals are allowed to get away if they are Muslims.

Amidst all of this, political violence in the state continues unabated and BJP workers and supporters are being murdered at a worrying frequency. Even women are not being spared. With circumstances getting worse every day, things don’t appear to be getting better anytime soon.
