The player of the tournament of the World Cup 2019 will be decided after the final game on Sunday between England and New Zealand. There are five prime candidates for winning the award, one each from Australia, India, Bangladesh, New Zealand, and England.
1. Rohit Sharma
Six hundred forty-eight runs and 5 World Cup Hundreds for him in the World Cup, a world record of scoring most hundreds in a series in limited over cricket. The Indian opener is also the highest run-scorer of the current World Cup. He missed breaking Tendulkar’s record of most runs in a world cup edition by just 25 runs.
2. Shakib Al Hasan
Probably the most deserving to win the award as he not only scored runs consistently but also took 11 wickets. The best all-round performance by any player in 12 editions. He scored 606 runs in 8 innings with an average of 86.57. Shakib scored two centuries and five half-centuries, and his lowest total is 48 in the tournament. He also has one five-wicket haul.
3. Joe Root
England’s most consistent batsman of the competition. He scored 549 runs with two centuries on his name. Joe Root is on the verge of breaking Tendulkar’s World Cup record of most runs in an edition; he needs 125 runs to break the record in the final match. There would be a high chance of winning the award if England wins on Sunday.
4. Kane Williamson
The kiwi captain, the backbone of the batting line up, has scored 548 runs in the tournament with two back to back hundreds. The coolest of all, Kane has led his team to the finals. Kane is averaging 91.33 in the tournament, the best by any batsman in the competition. He would be eyeing to win the World Cup rather than thinking about winning the player of the tournament award.
5. Mitchell Starc
The most wickets in a World Cup edition, yes, Starc has 27 wickets in this World Cup, which is one more than McGrath’s record in 2007. He bowled superbly in league stages, but couldn’t repeat the performance in the semis against England. The second most wicket-taker in the World Cup is Mustafizur Rahman with 20 wickets, has seven wicket less than Starc.
