Former Chief Minister of Delhi Sheila Dikshit passes away at the age of 81

A stalwart for the Delhi Congress unit, Dikshit had led the Congress party to three consecutive electoral victories in Delhi.

The longest-serving chief minister of Delhi and a veteran Congress leader Sheila Dikshit has passed away at the age of 81. She was reportedly ill for the last several days. Reasons for her demise has been stated as prolong illness and old age. She reportedly breathed her last at 3:30 pm today.


A stalwart for the Delhi Congress unit, Dikshit had led the Congress party to three consecutive electoral victories in Delhi. In the December 2013 elections to the Delhi Legislative Assembly, Dikshit was defeated in New Delhi constituency by Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal, who replaced her as Delhi’s chief minister.

She was later sworn in as Governor of Kerala on March 11 2014. She resigned from the post on August 25, 2014. Dikshit was declared as Chief Ministerial candidate for the Uttar Pradesh 2017 elections. However, she later withdrew her nomination. She was appointed as president of Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee on January 10, 2019.
