Reportedly, the rally was just started at Tollygunge Phari at 1 pm in South Kolkata and was scheduled to reach Hazra about two km away. The residence of Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee is near Hazra.
Vijayvargiya told the reporters, “We don’t expect such behaviour from the police. The way we were stopped and arrested is authoritarianism and unconstitutional. We were supporting the CAA in a democratic manner. The entire country is supporting it. We condemn the way the government is trying to stop us”.
However, police denied the reports of their arrest. Deputy Commissioner of Kolkata Police(south division) Meeraj Khalid said, “We have detained the BJP leaders. They have not been arrested”.
Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee is extremely vocal against the CAA, BJP and its policies but didn’t utter a word on the violence and destruction of the public property done by the Muslim mob in the state of West Bengal. In December Muslim mobs had resorted to extreme violence after Friday prayers in West Bengal. They unleashed violence across the state by burning public infrastructure, toll plaza, railway stations and destroyed crores worth of tax-payers money in the name of protests against CAA.
The Muslim Mob also thrashed a Railway Police Force personnel at Beldanga railway station complex. They had pelted stones at ambulances and vandalized the Beldanga railway station. In Kolkata, they assembled in Park Circus and disrupted traffic for hours to protest against Citizenship Amendment Act.
