On Sunday (7th July), a case related to outraging the modesty of a woman was registered against TMC MP Mahua Moitra for her derogatory remarks against National Commission of Women (NCW) chief Rekha Sharma. As per reports, the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit of the Delhi Police Special Cell will now seek details from X (formerly Twitter) about the account from which the controversial post was made against the NCW Chief.
Police stated that the matter will be further investigated after receiving the information. Notably, an FIR was registered against the controversial TMC MP after the Women’s Commission had lodged a complaint with the Delhi Police in connection with her ‘Pajama’ remark against Sharma.
The recent case involving Mahua Moitra unfolded on Thursday (4th July). She had commented on a post that included a video of Rekha Sharma when she arrived in Hathras to meet the victims of the stampede that took place at a private religious congregation.
In the video, Sharma was seen at the site, with someone carrying an umbrella for her. Journalist Nidhi Razdan on X asked, “Why can’t she carry her own umbrella?”
Moitra responded to Razdan’s post and wrote, “She’s too busy holding up her boss’s pajamas,” sparking online backlash. The remarks triggered a suo moto cognisance from the National Commission for Women, which wrote to the Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla demanding strict action against Moitra. The Commission also demanded an FIR against the TMC MP for a comment that doesn’t behoove a lawmaker.

“The crude remarks are outrageous and a violation of a woman’s right to dignity. The Commission observed that this remark attracts Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, 2023. NCW strongly condemns these defamatory remarks and requests strict action against Ms Moitra. An FIR should be registered against Ms Moitra and a detailed action report should be communicated to the Commission within 3 days,” NCW tweeted.
Responding to NCW’s complaint, Moitra stated no regrets. Instead, she posed a challenge to Delhi Police to get to her in the next three days. “Come on Delhi Police please take action immediately on these suo moto orders. Am in Nadia in case you need me in the next 3 days to make a quick arrest. I Can Hold My Own Umbrella,” she tweeted.

The MP from West Bengal’s Krishnanagar, Moitra was disqualified from the Lok Sabha last year following the ‘cash for query’ scam row. She has been notorious for making headlines for her unhinged rants and abusive behaviour inside and outside the parliament.
