On 29th July, a 31-year-old Indian man in Vietnam almost died after inserting a live eel, roughly 65cm long, inside his anus. Viet Duc Hospital in Hanoi said that its doctors performed a successful emergency operation to save the patient’s life.
On July 27th, the hospital’s emergency department received a 31-year-old male patient who was experiencing significant stomach pain. After obtaining the patient’s medical history, it was discovered that he had inserted a huge eel into his anus at noon local time on the same day. The patient was quickly examined, including imaging, testing, and an ultrasound scan. The X-ray pictures revealed a radiopaque skeleton lying horizontally in the abdominal cavity, from left to right.

Le Nhat Huy, deputy director of Viet Duc Hospital’s Colorectal and Pelvic Floor Surgery Centre, stated that the hospital immediately arranged for a team of endoscopic experts and anaesthesiologists to carry out a colonoscopy in a bid to eliminate the disturbing object through the anus.
The team opted to perform emergency surgery since they couldn’t reach the eel through the anus and the patient’s suffering was getting worse. When the physicians opened the patient’s tummy, they discovered a live eel measuring 65cm in length and 10cm in circumference. “The eel had bitten through the patient’s rectum and colon to escape into the abdominal cavity,” Huy said.
After extracting the eel, the physicians also removed a lemon from the anus. After ensuring that there were no further foreign objects, the rectum and colon holes were attached.
However, due to the severe contamination of the rectum and the presence of fecal matter in the abdominal cavity, the surgeons opted to perform a colostomy to prevent feces from passing through the newly sutured perforation. According to specialists, many people, particularly young guys, have a proclivity to seek out unexpected experiences through sex toys.
In March this year, a similar incident was reported after a 34-year-old Vietnamese man suffered stomach cramps. A live eel that had been inserted in his rectum had to be surgically removed. The unidentified man was admitted to the Hai Ha District Medical Center in Quang Ninh Province complaining of excruciating stomach cramps.
