Punjab: Retired Assistant Inspector General of Police shoots IRS officer son-in-law dead in Chandigarh district court

The deceased IRS officer was involved in a matrimonial dispute with his wife and then his father-in-law shot him dead

On Saturday, August 3, a retired Punjab Police officer shot dead his son-in-law in Chandigarh district court. The deceased son-in-law was an IRS officer. Though the police are not divulging any details, reports say the firing took place due to a matrimonial dispute between the two high-profile families.

The incident took place on Saturday, August 3, afternoon, when the former Assistant Inspector General Malwinder Singh shot dead his son-in-law Harpreet, an officer in the irrigation department in full public view and fled the spot. Immediately after the incident, the victim was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead.

The deceased has been identified as Harpreet Singh, an officer in the irrigation department of  Punjab. The accused who carried out the murder has been identified as Malwinder Singh Sidhu, a now retired Assistant Inspector General of the Punjab police.

Following the matrimonial dispute, both families had arrived at the district court for the mediation. During the meditation session, Malwinder Singh requested to use the washroom and asked Harpreet to show him the way. Moments later, Malwinder allegedly took out a weapon and shot Harpreet twice, resulting in his death.

The police are yet to confirm whether the accused retired police officer has been arrested.
