Woman doctor found dead in Kolkata’s govt medical college, BJP launches protest alleging police trying to show murder as suicide

A group of younger doctors has said that they will not work due to the hospital's general lack of security. The doctors have further begun protesting claiming that only the emergency ward of the hospital should be open.

On Friday, 9th August, the BJP in West Bengal launched a massive protest demanding justice for a woman doctor who was found dead in a government college under mysterious circumstances. BJP’s Amit Malviya alleged that the woman had been raped and murdered and further alleged that the Mamata Banerjee-led government was trying to cover up the crime by showing it as a suicide.

“A woman doctor, in a leading Govt hospital in Kolkata, raped and murdered. Her naked body was found from the duty room. Mamata Banerjee Govt is trying to hide the crime. Kolkata Police has been asked to cover up and show it as suicide. Media is not being allowed in. Repeat: no woman, from Sandeshkhali to Chopra, is safe in West Bengal,” he said.

“Mamata Banerjee’s administration is using Kolkata Police to hush up the matter despite hospital authorities confirming trauma injury marks. How long will Bengal turn a blind eye to crimes against women?” he added.

The incident is said to have happened on the third floor of the emergency building of RG Kar Medical College in West Bengal’s Kolkata on Friday morning. The victim who was a second-year postgraduate student of RG Kar Medical College, was found dead inside the Seminar Hall on the 3rd floor of the campus.

As per the police, the woman had gone to the third-floor seminar hall to have dinner.

The hospital has constituted an 11-member inquiry committee for this particular incident. On the other side, a group of younger doctors has said that they will not work due to the hospital’s general lack of security. The doctors have further begun protesting claiming that only the emergency ward of the hospital should be open.

Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, spoke to the victim’s parents on Friday. The victim’s mother claimed that she called her last night and when she stated that she was fine. The mother added that she believes this is murder.

“She was semi-naked and had injury marks; her spectacles were shattered; she has been murdered,” the victim’s mother remarked.

Several BJP leaders have gathered around the hospital along with the protesting doctors to seek justice for the victim. They allege that the TMC government is trying to hide the rape incident and has allegedly ordered the police to show it as a suicide case.

Further probe in this case is underway.
