Karnataka Youth Congress leaders submit mass resignation in a dispute over ticket distribution

In mounting electoral troubles for the Congress party, the Youth Congress leaders from the Dakshin Kannada district submitted mass resignations over the party’s decision to deny a ticket to Youth Congress president of Dakshina Kannada District – Mithun Rai, for the upcoming assembly elections in the state. These resignations were submitted to the district Congress Committee (DCC). Rai had earlier expressed his desire to contest elections from the Mulky-Moodbidri constituency.

The resignations included that of office bearers and presidents of Youth Congress Block Committees, in all the eight Dakshin Kannada assembly seats.

As per the general secretary of the Dakshina Kannada District Youth Congress Committee – Kiran Kumar, the denial of ticket to Rai had “pained” the district’s youth leaders. As a result, he claimed youth leaders weren’t showing much interest in working for the party, which resulted in the mass resignations.

As per reports, the incumbent MLA from Mulky-Moodbidri had three years ago announced his intention to not contest the election thereby paving way for the youth. He, as a result, claimed that Rai had been working in the constituency, but still got overlooked.

Kumar claimed that the Youth Congress has chosen to remain neutral in the district. They though haven’t expressed any inclination to resign from the party.

The district Congress committee president K Harish Kumar in response to these resignations claimed that the issue will be solved amicably.

This resignation headache for the party comes after various other internal disputes which have cropped in the party over its choice of ticket distribution.

As reported, the Congress party workers were seen vandalising party offices in Mandya in an effort to show discontent over the ticket distribution. The discontent has also included party workers chanting anti-Siddaramaiah slogans, burning tyres, effigies etc on the streets. One of the voices of discontentment was party spokesperson and Siddaramaiah’s legal adviser Brijesh Kalappa.

Following the declaration of the first list of candidates which saw 107 out of 122 sitting MLAs getting renominated, the party witnessed open discontentment from party workers in state’s regions including Hangal, Mayakonda, Kittur, Tiptur, Kunigal, Kolar, Kollegal, Belur, Badami and Jagalur.
