Uttar Pradesh: Tanveer lies and serves chicken biryani in place of veg biryani to 4 pilgrims returning from Haridwar, arrested

A group of pilgrims returning from Haridwar was served biryani stuffed with chicken pieces by Tanveer despite ordering a vegetarian meal, sparking outrage and underscoring the significance of the UP government's order for restaurant and dhaba owners to display their identity prominently on their signboards.

Chaos broke out at the city bus stop after non-vegetarian biryani was served to pilgrims who were returning to Delhi from Haridwar via Kandhla after taking Gangajal. The young people who felt wronged called 112 to report the issue and demanded action. The accused hawker named Tanveer was apprehended by authorities upon receiving the information, and he was subsequently brought to the police station. The incident transpired on 4th August when four youths from Delhi stopped at the Kandhla bus stand in the Shamli district to purchase some food. They saw a board of ‘veg biryani’ on a cart and inquired if it was true, to which the seller assured them about the same.

The aggrieved party then ordered biryani, however, one of them grew suspicious and asked Tanveer to show them the biryani due to which an altercation erupted between the two sides. They opened the biryani pot and discovered chicken pieces inside it which angered them and they confronted him. Meanwhile, Anuj Tyagi, one of the four young men notified the cops as unrest ensued. The policemen rushed to the spot and tried to placate them. Afterwards, the cops parked the cart in Taveer’s shop, closed it and took him to the police station.

Police station in-charge Devendra Sharma stated that a youth named Anuj Tyagi had informed them about the matter on 112 after which they reached the location and apprehended the culprit who was then taken to the police station. The authorities are taking appropriate action in the case.

Notably, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s Uttar Pradesh government had directed all eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route to display the names of their owners and the staff employed by them. The Chief Minister highlighted that the decision was taken to preserve the sanctity of Kanwar pilgrims. He then issued similar commands for Sawan Mela and other festivities that took place in the sacred month of Shravan.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s administration also passed a directive mandating hotel and dhaba owners on the highways along the Kanwar Yatra route to display their names and mobile numbers. However, the Supreme Court stayed both the orders while dubbing them discriminatory.

The incident, nevertheless, has brought to the fore the significance of the state government’s order to display the identity of the restaurant owners prominently on their board to end confusion and avoid conflicts with pilgrims, a considerable section of whom consider consuming non-vegetarian food as a taboo and a violation of their faith.
