10 BSF Jawans on the way to Jammu on an Army special train go missing

In a curious occurrence of events, 10 BSF jawans heading to Jammu were reported missing. The special train left for Jammu with 83 soldiers in West Bengal on Wednesday. During a halt at Mughalsarai railway station, the soldiers were counted and it was found out that 10 had gone missing.

An FIR was lodged by their commander at the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Mughalsarai stating the jawans were “absent without leave.”

Officials accompanying the BSF battalion said that the missing jawans could have alighted from the special train between Bardhaman in West Bengal and Dhanbad in Jharkhand stations.

Sub-Inspector Jitendra Kumar Yadav, of Mugalsarai railway station, told reporters on Thursday that 10 BSF jawans went missing from a special train while they were on their way to Jammu & Kashmir.

“Their commander has submitted a complaint to us. We have registered a case and are investigating the matter. 83 BSF jawans were going to Jammu and Kashmir in a special train. Out of them, 10 jawans went missing somewhere in between Dhanbad and Bardhaman without informing their commander. We have filed an absconding report and have started investigating the matter,” SI said.

In the past too, cases of BSF jawans going missing have surfaced. Last year a BSF jawan serving at a Border Out Post (BoP) along the international border has gone missing while on his way back from his home in Mizoram. The jawan had been identified as Constable Malsawkima of 97 battalions and was serving at BoP Pansar in Hiranagar sector of Kathua district. It was however reported later that he had returned home.

In 2010, Gajendra Singh, a 29-year-old constable from 107 battalions of the BSF posted at Balimela in Malkangiri district has been missing from Jeypore bus stand. According to the complaints reported in Balimela and Jeypore police stations by the BSF, Singh was returning to the camp from Jalalpur, his native in Uttar Pradesh and had informed the camp office of his arrival first at Koraput and later at Jeypore.
