During a survey in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal, a 250-foot-deep stepwell, dating back to the era of the 1857 revolt, was found. The stepwell was found after two bulldozers were excavating around the Banke Bihari Temple in the Laxman Ganj area of Sambhal.
Sanatan Sevak Sangh’s state publicity chief, Kaushal Kishore, had earlier written to Sambhal District Magistrate Rajendra Pensia that Laxman Ganj used to house the royal family of Sahaspur and also had a stepwell. The stepwell reportedly dates back to the first war of independence in 1857.
Following that letter, the DM ordered excavation at the site where they discovered the historic stepwell.
Notably, the temple was also discovered during an anti-encroachment drive.
