Jammu: Police suspect terror funding as they seize Rs 30 lakh from Rohingyas

Illegally settled Rohingyas have been reportedly detained by the Police in Channi Himmat area of Jammu near Sunjwan military camp area and seized Rs 30 lakh from them. Senior Superintendent of Police Jammu Vivek Gupta said that the two main culprits, who brought the money, are absconding but their three close aides have been detained after the seizure of the cash. He also confirmed that the raid was carried out as the police received a tip-off. “Our teams are continuously keeping vigil over all suspected movements and this recovery is the result of our day and night surveillance,” SSP Jammu Vivek Gupta said.

He further said that the matter is being investigated and what is the source of this huge cash is also being looked into, while a manhunt has been launched to apprehend the culprits. Police have reportedly concluded that the possibility of theft, narco smuggling, and link to various terrorist groups could not be ruled out.

Recently many Jammu-based political parties, NGOs, and social organizations have been raising voice over the deportation of Rohingyas and Bangladeshi nationals, who are illegally settled in parts of Jammu district.

Reports suggest how these illegal migrants have mysteriously managed to own properties including big and small commercial establishments. A Crime Investigation Department (CID) officer had also revealed that Rohingyas have managed to buy state land, and in one case, a Rohingya was found possessing a bungalow worth two crores.

These illegal immigrants, however, have been regularly reported of being involved in unlawful activities, ranging from drug peddling to human trafficking and allegedly have various terrorist links too.

Notably, a terror attack was carried out at Sunjwan military station in Narwal on February 10, after which fingers were raised at illegal settlement of Rohingyas around the camp. Almost during the same period in the month of February this year, human trafficking racket, being operated allegedly by a Rohingya Muslim in Jammu was exposed by Trikuta Nagar SHO Inspector Parvez Sajad. Besides this, numbers of Rohingyas have been booked in Jammu for their involvement in drug peddling.

The problem of illegal immigrants has been often described as ‘ticking time bomb’ by the intelligentsia. Many have been thriving and flourishing by fuelling narco smuggling, human trafficking, child abductions, sacrilegious acts, border crossing, etc.
