Journalist turned filmmaker spreads fake news about Bulandshahr, attacks police after being called out

UP police have clarified that the word in the video was 'Mullan' a term referring to Muslims.

Vinod Kapri, the former editor of Zee News and India TV and at present a movie director, shared a video on Twitter on the Bulandshahr incident where he claimed that people could be heard saying that the cows were slaughtered by one ‘Kundan’. The video that has gone viral since then has garnered over four thousand retweets and were picked up by various media outlets.

‘Kundan’ is most likely to be the name of a Hindu man and therefore, Kapri is likely to have believed that it throws the turn of events at Bulandshahar on its head.

Many had pointed out even then that the words said in the video were unclear and that it appeared that the voices were saying ‘Mullan’ (Muslims) and not Kundan. People also asked the UP Police, who are quite active on the social media platform, to issue a clarification on the matter.

The UP Police have spoken on the matter and they contradicted the claims made by Kapri. As per Times Of India, a top cop involved with the probe stated that the word mentioned in the viral video is ‘Mullan’ and not Kundan. ‘Mullan’ is a local slang for Muslims and is used in many parts of Western UP.

Associate Editor at ABP News and Criminologist, Indrajeet Rai, also confirmed that the word used was ‘Mullan’ which refers to the Muslim community and not ‘Kundan’ as claimed by Kapri.

Despite having his claims refuted by both the UP Police and an experienced criminologist, Kapri remains unapologetic and has started questioning the integrity of the Police instead. He said on Twitter, “The UP Police that prioritizes the investigation of cow slaughter over of the death of one of its own men and the hatemongers who want to believe them, are free to do so.”

Bulandshahr was gripped with violence recently after carcasses of cows were discovered in the area. The villagers, claiming that the Police wasn’t taking their complaints seriously, resorted to violence which resulted in the death of a Police officer and a civilian. Since then, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered compensation for the deceased police officer and also ordered a strict crackdown on cow slaughter.
