‘I represent an inclusive India’, MP Nusrat Jahan reacts to fatwa against her issued by Deoband clerics

The Deoband clerics are notorious for issuing outlandish fatwas

In a tweet posted last night, newly elected TMC MP Nusrat Jahan reacted to the fatwa issued against her by Deoband clerics. The fatwa was issued as she had worn sindoor and mangalsutra to the Parliament.

She wrote: “I represent an inclusive India which is beyond the barriers of caste, creed and religion. I still remain a Muslim and none should comment on what I choose to wear. Faith is beyond attire and is more about believing and practising the invaluable doctrines of all religions”.

Fellow TMC MP Mimi Chakraborty also supported her saying, “we are Indian and that’s our only identification, proud Indian and will be”.

Yesterday, Deoband clerics issued a fatwa against Nusrat Jahan for wearing sindoor and mangalsutra to the Parliament while taking her oath. They also said that a Muslim can only marry a Muslim. Previously, Islamist trolls had also attacked for marrying outside her religion. Nusrat had married businessman Nikhil Jain in Turkey on June 19, 2019. She had missed taking oath along with other MPs due to her wedding, and took her oath on 25th. She had taken the oath in the name of ‘Ishwar’, and ended it with phrases such as Vande Mataram, Jai Hind and Joi Bangla.

The Deoband clerics are notorious for issuing outlandish fatwas. They have issued fatwas against banking, life insurance, music, CCTV and even nail polish. Union Minister Giriraj Singh had previously described the Darul Uloom Deoband a ”temple of terrorism”.
