Farmer commits suicide in Rahul Gandhi’s new constituency, fifth such suicide in 6 months in Wayanad

The deceased farmer had taken loans from three banks which he was unable to repay

A debt-ridden farmer has committed suicide in Rahul Gandhi’s Lok Sabha Constituency in Kerala. This is the fifth suicide in Wayanad 6 months. According to reports, the deceased farmer had taken loans from three banks which he was unable to repay. As a consequence of the huge debt, he took the extreme step.

The farmer has been identified as Chulugod Enkittan. According to his relatives, he committed suicide due to financial liabilities. He was from Marakkadavu in Pulpally of Wayanad. Despite the presence of a river, the area suffers from drought. The cultivation this year was affected by it.

During the run-up to the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, Rahul Gandhi had accused the BJP of ignoring farmer’s distress. However, he had conveniently remained almost silent regarding the misery of the farmers in states where the BJP was not in power.

Even after winning the Assembly Elections in three states in 2018, The Congress party had done very little to address the farmer crisis. Despite Rahul Gandhi’s claims of a farm loan waiver, it benefited the farmers very little and suicides continue to occur. It remains to be seen whether he will address the crisis in Wayanad as the elected Parliamentarian from the constituency.
