Time to get rid of Imran Khan’s ‘fake government’: Pakistani opposition leaders at ‘Azadi March’

The highly publicised 'Azadi March' spearheaded by prominent right-wing Pakistani cleric Maulana Fazlur Rehman's Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) saw participation from various opposition leaders

Pakistan PM Imran Khan has found himself in the soup as disparate opposition parties have united to demand resignation from him amidst the economic crisis. In a resolute effort to oust Imran Khan Government from the office, the opposition leaders in Pakistan collectively declared that it is time to get rid of the ‘fake government’ headed by Imran Khan, accusing him of “blatantly rigging” the 2018 general elections following which he became the prime minister of Pakistan.

The highly publicised ‘Azadi March’ spearheaded by prominent right-wing Pakistani cleric Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) saw participation from various opposition leaders such as leaders of the Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), and Awami National Party (ANP) in their attempt to depose Pakistan PM Imran Khan from his office. However, this massive rally which was supposed to reach Islamabad on Thursday got postponed for a day, in the wake of the tragic Lahore train inferno that killed at least 74 people.

Addressing a large swathe of crowd, PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif demanded resignation from Pakistan PM Imran Khan saying that it is time Pakistan gets rid of the fake government. “It is time to get rid of this government which came to power through brazen rigging. We will not let Imran Khan go free until Pakistan gets rid of the prime minister,” he said.

Sharif further continued, “You pioneered this kind of politics, you claimed that you will burn down the Parliament, you said something about me. I will not deign to answer in your language. Despite such flagrant rigging, for the benefit of the nation, we said we are ready for a charter of economy. He haughtily rejected our offer.”

Sharif added that the united opposition is capable of stabilising the sliding economy and said that the country’s economic situation is in the worst shape in its 72 years of history. “If given a chance, the opposition can fix the economy in just six months or you can change my name to Imran Niazi,” Sharif declaimed.

Another opposition leader, PPP chief Bilawal Bhutto Zardari dismissed Imran Khan as a “puppet” and claimed that the nation is not ready to bow its head before a “selected” prime minister and “those who have selected him”.

ANP leader Mian Iftikhar Hussain too echoed similar sentiments as Shehbaz Sharif accusing Imran Khan government of manipulating the General elections 2018. He said that the opposition parties will not rest until the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-led government has been “sent home”.

Unfazed by the protest, Prime Minister Khan, while addressing a public rally in Gilgit-Baltistan, told the protesters congregated in Islamabad that when they run out of food, more will be sent to them, but their leaders should not expect any relief from him.
