In a bizarre incident, a mistake by State Bank of India in assigning account numbers to two account holder with the same name in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhind district has led to huge confusion. Following the gaffe by SBI, one of the account holders was happy to find large amounts of money being mysteriously deposited every month leading him to believe that it was indeed PM Modi who was giving him the money.
According to a PTI report, the confusion started after a branch of State Bank of India (SBI) in Alampur town in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhind district opened two accounts with same account numbers and assigned it to two different customers. The passbooks of Hukum Singh, a resident of Rurai village and Hukum Singh, who is from Rony village were given the same number for their account leading up to the dramatic turn of events. This meant one account had two holders.
Reportedly, after opening his, the Hukum Singh from Rurai village went to Haryana in search of work and began depositing his savings in the Alampur SBI.
Hukum Singh who lives in Madhya Pradesh was puzzled to know that money appearing in the account every month. A delighted Hukum Singh thought that it was the work of Prime Minister Modi, who deposited money to his account regularly. Promptly, Hukum Singh withdrew money from his account this every month – a total of Rs. 89,000 over six months.
The case was detected when Hukum Singh of Rurai village checked his account on October 16 this year and found large withdrawals.
Hukum Singh from Rurai said, “I had opened this bank account in 2016 and have been regularly depositing money. I thought of withdrawal to buy a plot of land. That’s when I found someone had already withdrawn Rs 89,000 from my account”. He claimed he is yet to get his money back despite several visits to the bank.
However, in his defence, Hukum Singh from Rauni, who had made the withdrawals claimed, “I thought Modi ji (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) was giving this money so I withdrew it,” and went on to add that “this is carelessness on the part of the bank”.
