Congress makes Gandhiji’s langot part of its legacy on Twitter, but it was probably not the best way to do it

Today, even as everyone was coming to terms with facing Monday after the long Diwali weekend, Congress social media cell took it upon themselves to shake everyone out of their Monday blues.

Congress Twitter handle, under part of its #KnowYourLegacy Twitter campaign asked its followers what did Gandhiji keep in his loin cloth (langot).

Earlier, as a part of this campaign, Congress had asked its followers on which animal did former Prime Minister Nehru arrive in Bhutan in 1958. One of the options was a donkey. While correct answer was Yak, most people had voted for Donkey, which reduced Nehru to a joke.

One would expect how Congress would learn from the mistake and make sure that such gaffes do not happen again which could turn India’s leaders into a butt of jokes on Twitter. Internet is a great equaliser and nothing is sacred here. Twitter users mock everyone and everything hence this type of question is probably not the best way to spread information about father of the nation.

Even if we assume that Congress only wanted to spread information and awareness as to why Gandhiji decided to wear only the loin cloth, they’re a month late.

They could have shared it on 22nd September, the 96th anniversary of the day on which he decided to wear just that. He had taken this decision in Madurai back on 22nd September, 1921, so that the poor people of India could identify with him.

It is quite unfortunate that Congress would deliberately try to use Gandhiji and make a joke out of his loin cloth and the millions of poor people he fought for, specially, considering the Congress party has long appropriate Gandhi’s legacy as their own and built their political foundation around him and his name.

Here are some of the jokes this distasteful tweet poll to:

One would be reminded of their childhood when kids would crack ‘Gandhiji ki dhoti mein’ jokes by inserting movie names after the phrase. It is surprising that no one in Congress had heard of the juvenile jokes most children had cracked even before #ReplaceMovieNameWith hashtags started trending on Twitter. But we were kids, and kids do stupid stuff. But not expected of the grand old party of Indian politics.

Soon Gandhiji’s iconic loin cloth, which is a mark of his simplicity, was reduced to a meme by Congress.

It is indeed tragic that a time when Gujarat goes to election in few weeks’ time, Congress chose to mock yet another Gujarati icon.
