Alwar incident: gau rakshaks or gang wars?

Days after the incident in Alwar where 3 men were allegedly attacked by alleged cow vigilantes where one Umar Mohammed had succumbed to injuries, Rajasthan Police has said that this is a case of ‘gang wars’ and not cow vigilantism. It is reported that a shootout took place between the gang of robbers posing as ‘gau rakshaks’ and Ummar Khan and his two accomplices last Friday which led to Khan’s death.

Police has said that two robbers, including alleged mastermind Bhagwan Singh, who allegedly attacked them were interrogated where they said that both criminal groups had a run-in at Ghahenkar village on the Alwar-Bharatpur border on Friday where the two gangs exchanged fire and Ummar was killed. The police have registered a case of murder, loot and attempt to murder against Bhagwan Singh and his five other accomplices. The four other gang members are still on a run.

The police further said that a separate case has been registered against Tahir and Javed alias Jabbar. The pick-up van in which the livestock was being transported had a fake number plate of a two-wheeler. According to Police, Tahir Khan has five cases against him – three of which are under sections of the Rajasthan Bovine Animal (Prohibition of Slaughter and Regulation of Temporary Migration or Export) Act or the RB Act, while two cases are of assault. Police also claimed that Ummar Khan too was wanted in a case under the RB Act.

On 11th November, Ummar Khan’s body was found near railway tracks in Ramgarh. His family members and activists alleged that he was shot dead by cow vigilantes when he was ferrying cattle in a vehicle the previous day.
