Jack Dorsey highlights Twitter using trackers, apologises after netizens remind him that they were added long before Musk took over

On Monday (November 7), Twitter founder Jack Dorsey insinuated that the social media platform introduced trackers after Elon Musk took over as the new owner of the company.

In a tweet, he claimed, “These tracking additions when sharing a tweet are a step backwards. Nothing needed after the ‘?'”. The archive of the tweet can be accessed here.

Jack Dorsey suggested that the platform is moving in the wrong direction, with Musk at the helm of its affairs, and how people’s privacy is being compromised with enhanced tracking of Twitter users.

Netizens were quick to point out that the trackers existed, much before Elon Musk acquired Twitter. A staff security engineer at Dropbox, April King, re-shared a tweet from April 7 this year wherein she was seen complaining about the tracing tokens.

“Really annoyed that @twitter added what is (presumably) a tracking token every time you share a tweet now. Makes all my messages look long and ugly, or requires a bunch of pointless busywork,” she had tweeted then.

April King pointed out how the trackers were introduced when Jack Dorsey served on the Board of Directors of Twitter Inc. and that they were possibly developed during his tenure as the Chief Executive Officer.

Cybersecurity expert, Joshua Steinman, had written a detailed thread in July about Twitter’s trackers while Elon Musk has acquired the company only recently in October end.

He pointed out how the social media platform was tracking every individual device, sharing a particular tweet. Steinman suggested deleting every tracking parameter that followed the ‘?’ in the tweet to avoid providing information when links are shared offline.

Another Twitter user said, “Not sure when you woke up but those have been there pre-Elon.” It was only then Jack conceded that he was aware of the truth.
Yes I know,” Jack Dorsey confirmed.

Another user emphasised, “Been like this for months. Not a new addition.” Jack Dorsey finally realised that he could not further continue his insinuations about the new Twitter CEO. “Apologies,” he said.

The confrontation between Elon Musk and Jack Dorsey over information dissemination on Twitter

On Monday (November 7), Elon Musk informed that his mission is to turn the micro-blogging platform into an ‘accurate source of information.’ The archived version of the tweet can be accessed here.

The new CEO and owner of Twitter wrote, “Twitter needs to become by far the most accurate source of information about the world. That’s our mission.”

When Twitter founder and former CEO, Jack Dorsey, asked who would determine the accuracy of the information disseminated on the social media platform, Musk said, “As judged by the people of Twitter via Community Notes (formerly Birdwatch).”

He also unveiled his plan of democratising journalism and empowering people through widespread verification, which can be obtained by paying $8 in the near future. “Widespread verification will democratize journalism & empower the voice of the people,” Elon Musk announced on Monday.

SC upholds validity of 10% quota for EWS, Congress leader Udit Raj slams the decision calling the apex court ‘casteist’

0

On November 7, 2022, the Supreme Court of India upheld the Constitutional validity of the 103rd Constitutional Amendment which grants a 10 per cent reservation to the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) for unreserved categories.

The five-judge constitution bench of Chief Justice UU Lalit and Justices Dinesh Maheshwari, S Ravindra Bhat, Bela M Trivedi and JB Pardiwala, in a 3:2 verdict, held that the provisions of the concerned amendment is not in violation of the constitution. The beneficiaries can now avail of the quota for admission to public sector educational institutions and government jobs.

Notably, while CJI UU Lalit and Justice S Ravindra Bhat dissented from the majority judgment, Justices Maheshwari, Trivedi and Pardiwala upheld the EWS quota in admissions and government jobs.

After the Supreme Court affirmed the legality of the 103rd Constitutional Amendment, which provides 10% reservation to people from Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) in admissions and government positions, Congress leader Udit Raj made another controversial statement.

The Congress leader dubbed the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the EWS reservation “casteist” in a tweet.

The tweet in Hindi said, “Supreme Court is casteist, is there still any doubt! When it came to EWS reservation, how was it reversed that the 50% limit is not a constitutional obligation, but whenever it came to giving reservation to SC/ST/OBC, the 50% limit in the Indira Sawhney case was cited.”

Hitting out again on the apex court, the Congress leader put ut another Tweet that read, “I am not against EWS reservation but is pained to observe the upper caste mindset of Supreme Court that it took total U turn today what it had been holding ever since Indira Sahani judgement. Whenever SC/ST/OBC reservation matters came , SC always reminded the limit of 50%.

It may be recalled how a slew of petitions against the EWS quota had been filed in the Supreme Court. A five-judge constitution bench led by Chief Justice U U Lalit had begun hearing the matter on September 13.

The Modi government implemented the EWS Quota in 2019, after which a 10% reservation quota for members of the general category Economically Weaker Sections is being offered in public sector educational institutions and government jobs. It was passed to help the poor who were not safeguarded by the reservation policy for SCs, STs, and OBCs.

Sukesh Chandrasekhar writes third letter to LG, accuses Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal of being deeply involved in all cases against him

As per media reports, jailed conman Sukesh Chandrasekhar has written the third letter in a row to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi VK Saxena, alleging that he is receiving severe threats from jailed state government minister Satyendar Jain and Director General Prisons Sandeep Goel.

In the letter dated November 4, Sukesh requested that a CBI inquiry should be conducted and that he be permitted to register an FIR because “the pressure is getting too much and any undue event may take place before the truth about AAP is exposed.”

Sukesh went on to say that it is not just about Satyendar Jain, but that Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and Kailash Gehlot have been deeply engaged in all of the cases involving him.

“I have read the news and seen that Mr Arvind Kejriwal has tweeted that BJP is putting me forward during election times and he wrote that I am the country’s biggest thug, which is misleading and diverting from the issue,” said Sukesh in the letter.

Levelling serious allegations against Arvind Kejriwal, Sukesh stated, “I hereby state that if I was the country’s biggest thug then why during 2016 when I personally delivered Rs 50 crore to Mr Satyendra Jain in presence of Mr Kailash Gahlot in his farm at Asola, and thereafter the same evening Mr Arvind Kejriwal and Mr Jain had visited me for dinner at Hyatt, Bhikaji Cama Place where I was staying. Mr Kejriwal asked me to mobilise a few large contributors who in return will be given positions and seats when expanded in southern states and insisted I bring at least 20 to 30 people from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu who can give at least Rs 500 crore.”

“He (Arvind Kejriwal) was very happy that within a short span I mobilised and contributed Rs 50 crore to the party, for which he said I earned his loyalty and nominations for Rajya sabha,” he further stated assign how Kejriwal was impressed by his work.

“As I got arrested in 2017 for an election symbol case, and am lodged in jail no. 1 Tihar, that’s when Mr Satyendra Jain started visiting me and wanted to know if I had disclosed any of the above facts regarding the Rs 50 crore contribution to investigating agency as Mr Kejriwal was very concerned,” the letter further added.

“I hereby humbly submit this short statement to show that as Mr Arvind Kejriwal is trying to defame me and act as though he does not know any of this, is completely being done with a manipulated and mala fide mind,” Sukesh wrote.

Sukesh Chandrasekhar is being held in Delhi’s Mandoli jail on allegations of attempting to extort money from prominent figures and celebrities. He was first detained at Tihar Prison, but after several appeals, he was transferred. He apparently received death threats while confined in Tihar. He has already sent two letters to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, detailing the threats he is still receiving.

Sandeep Goel, the Director General of Prisons, was transferred from Tihar Jail in the national capital on November 4, just days after Sukeshr said he had given protection money to Delhi minister Satyendar Jain. According to a written order, the 1989 batch AGMUT cadre officer was removed from Tihar Jail and directed to report to PHQ for further orders.

Deepening Hindu-Sikhs tensions to murder of Lala Jagat Narain and more: Brief history of attacks against Hindus in Punjab before peak insurgency

When we talk about the attack on Hindus in the state of Punjab, the majority of the documented and reported incidents happened during the peak of insurgency. However, the dark days of Punjab found their roots long before Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale came to the fore.

The background of Sikh radicalization and the deepening of friction between Hindus and Sikhs

Subrata K Mitra in his book ‘The Puzzle of India’s Governance Culture, context and comparative theory’ [Link] suggested that following the defeat in the 1972 elections, Akali Dal shifted its course to a Sikh-based orientation. In 1973, the Anandpur Sahib Resolution was drafted that called for a ‘radical devolution of power from the centre to the states’. There were several aspects of the resolution but the most prominent was a demand for more powers for the state and the classification of Sikhism as a separate religion. Sikhs are counted as part of the Hindu religion along with Buddhists, Jain and others.

In 1975, when then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency, the Akali Dal started ‘Save Democracy Morcha’. The direct conflict with the centre resulted in the arrest of around 40,000 Sikhs. Later, in the 1977 elections, Anandpur Sahib Resolution did not find its ground and Akali Dal kept on emphasizing the secular regional issues.

Meanwhile, there were sections of Sikhs moving forward towards the demand for a separate nation, Khalistan. However, the word Khalistan was still away from becoming “normal” in Punjab. In August 1977, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale became head or Jathedar of Damdami Taksal following the death of Jathedar Kartar Singh Khalsa. Notably, Kartar Singh had already appointed Bhindranwale the successor of Damdami Taksal before his death.

Between 1977 and 1980, Bhindranwale continued to propagate his vision and encouraged youth to join him in the Khalsa movement that called for a return to the lifestyle Sikhs followed before Green Revolution in the state. He denounced social evils including drugs, dowry and more.

Harnik Deol, in his book Religion and Nationalism in India: The Case of Punjab [Link], described how Bhindranwale’s charisma started to influence the youth in Punjab. Soon, people started to seek his intervention to address social grievances. There was a time when Bhindranwale used to hold personal courts to settle disputes.

His popularity was a sign of disenchantment of the people in the region with the expensive and time-consuming bureaucratic procedures. Furthermore, there was no surety that justice would be served through bureaucratic procedures. His verdict in the social disputes was respected by the masses.

Then came the 1980 elections where Akali Dal faced a serious challenge from Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale’s popularity. The middle-class Jat Sikhs had started to stand behind Bhindramwale in large numbers. By that time, he had joined hands with the All-India Sikh Students’ Federation (AISSF).

It is noteworthy that the violent clash between Bhindranwale’s fraction and Nirankaris in 1978 sowed the seed of political radicalization of Sikhs in the state. After Akali Dal lost the elections in 1980, they shifted their concentration towards extra-parliamentary agitation against the Government of India.

In September 1981, Anandpur Sahib Resolution was revived. It became the basis of 45 demands put in front of then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi under Dharm Yudh Morcha (Holy War) of the Akali Dal.

Khushwant Singh in his book titled ‘A History of the Sikhs: Volume 2: 1839-2004’ [Link] wrote that in March 1981, Ganga Singh Dhillon, a US-based pro-Khalistan movement and chairman of the Sri Nankana Sahib Foundation, was invited by the Chief Khalsa Diwan to speak at the Sikh Educational Conference. Dhillon described Sikhs as a “nation apart from other Indians”. He pursued the attendees to pass a resolution seeking Associated Status from the United Nations.

A month later in April 1981, Chief Khalsa Diwan asserted Sikhs would remain an inseparable part of India. However, by then the damage was done and Singh said the Sikhs had unwittingly allowed themselves to become a forum to propagate the theory of a Separate Nation for Sikhs.

Criticism of the Khalistan movement and murder of Lala Jagat Narain

With the rise of demand for a separate nation for Sikhs, it was obvious the movement would attract criticism. Arya Samajis were among the top critics of Sikhism and the Khalistani movement at that time. An Arya Samaji and a staunch critic of the Khalistan movement used his publication, Hind Samachar group of papers to express his views against the movement. 83-year-old Narain was an ex-minister of Punjab and a Member of Parliament.

His fearless and open opposition to the Khalistani movement was enough to put a target on his head. Lala Jagat Narain had survived an assassination attempt in January 1981. However, he was not lucky enough to escape in September 1981.

According to a report in India Today, Lala Jagat Narain was travelling in his grey Fiat from Patiala towards Jallandhar. An unmarked Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycle tailed him but went unnoticed by both driver Som Nath and Narain who was sitting in the back seat.

Four kilometres outside Ludhiana, the motorcycle came alongside the car and the pillion riders fired shots at the vehicle. The driver slammed the brakes and attempted to turn the vehicle but a bus blocked the path. The pillion riders jumped off the bike. One of them had a 0.45 calibre revolver and the other had a 0.32 calibre weapon. They both fired point-blank at Narain and the driver. Som Nath sustained a bullet injury but survived.

Lala Jagat Narain, however, was not lucky enough. He was shot thrice by the attacker. He fell on the seat immediately and soon after died. Narain’s death was among the first prominent murders that sparked uproar among Hindus across Punjab.

Assassins were not lucky enough themselves. Their bike broke down after the attack. One of the attackers identified as Nachhatar Singh, a self-proclaimed Naxalite, was arrested by the bystanders while the other two Dalbir Singh and Swaran Singh were listed as accused. Dalbir Singh was involved in the murder of Baba Gurbachan Singh murder case. Swaran Singh was relative of Bhindranwale. Notably, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale was also listed as one of the ‘conspirators’ in the murder case.

Arrest of Bhindranwale

In his book titled ‘Amritsar – Mrs Gandhi’s Last Battle’ Mark Tully and Satish Jacob [Link] mentioned that four days after the murder of Bhindranwale, an announcement was made on All India Radio that an arrest warrant against Bhindranwale was issued. At that time, he was lodged at a Gurudwara in Chando Kalan, Haryana.

During that time, former Janata Dal leader Bhajan Lal was the chief minister of the state. It is believed that he received a call from the central government not to arrest Bhindranwale. So much so, he had sent his vehicle to let Bhindranwale escape. When Punjab Police reached Chando Kalan to arrest Bhindranwale, he was long gone. A clash took place between already furious Punjab Police and Bhindranwale supporters.

Later Bhindranwale was traced at a Gurudwara at Village Chowk Mehta, around 40 KM from Amritsar. Heavy police and paramilitary force surrounded the Gurudwara. Though then-Chief Minister of Punjab Darbara Singh wanted to arrest Bhindranwale, the central government was adamant as his arrest might have resulted in violence.

Three senior police officers negotiated with Bhindranwale who then agreed to surrender to the police on September 20, 1981, at 1 PM. However, he added a condition that he, along with other religious leaders, would address his followers before the arrest. The police hesitated but agreed to the demand. Before the arrest, Bhindranwale gave a fierce speech attacking the Punjab Police, and the state and central government. He “urged” his followers to remain calm.

The murder of four Hindus on the day Bhindranwale was arrested

As soon as Bhindranwale was taken away, his followers opened fire at the police. During the clash, at least eleven people died. But this was not the end, but only the beginning. On that very day, three motorcycle-borne Sikhs opened fire at Hindus in a market in Jalandhar. Four Hindus were murdered and twelve others were injured. [5]

One Hindu murdered in Taran Tarn

On September 21, 1981, a similar incident occurred in Taran Tarn, a town close to Amritsar. In that incident, one Hindu was killed and thirteen others were injured. [5]

The release of Bhindranwale

On September 30, 1981, only ten days after the arrest of Bhindranwale, a plane was hijacked by five Khalistani terrorists of Dal Khalsa and taken to Lahore, Pakistan. The leader of the hijackers Gajendra Singh demanded the release of Bhindranwale and others. He also demanded $5,00,000 in cash. The passengers were rescued by Pakistan though ISI had opposed it. All 111 passengers were rescued without any casualties.

In October 1981, only a month after the arrest of Bhindranwale, then-Home Minister Zail Singh told the parliament that there was “no link of Bhindranwale to the killing of Lala Jagat Narain”. Bhindranwale was eventually released. Zail Singh allegedly hoped the violence would tone down after his release. Furthermore, it is believed that Zail Singh wanted to take political advantage of the release but instead, it dramatically hurt the morale of the Punjab Police. The state agency became an easy target of the Khalistani terrorists. [5]

Following the release of Bhindranwale, a series of attacks on the Hindu faith started. There were reports that severed heads and other parts of cows were deliberately placed in the temples very often. [5] It was believed that such acts were done not only to incite tension between Hindus and Sikhs but to impose fear in Hindus to the level they leave the state. However, the attacks took a further violent turn in September 1983.

Hindus attacked Jagraon

On September 28, 1983, Khalistani terrorists open fire at Hindus out of their homes for a morning walk. It is unclear if there was any casualty on that day. [5]

Six Hindus were killed in the Kapurthala district

On October 5, 1983, a bus was travelling from Dhilwan in Kapurthala district to Jalandhar. It was attacked by unidentified Khalistani terrorists. They separated the Hindu passengers from the Sikhs and shot them. Six Hindus were killed while one was seriously injured. [5]

President’s rule in Punjab

Following the attack on Hindus, Indira Gandhi-led government at the centre suspended the government and President’s rule was imposed in the state. Though Indira Gandhi wanted to show she did not lose the will to act [5], President’s rule and almost-open hand to security agencies did not stop violence in the state.

Three Hindus were killed in Chandigarh

In his ‘What’s happening to India? Punjab, ethnic conflict, Mrs Gandhi’s death and the test for federalism’ [Link], Robin Jeffery wrote that on October 14, 1983, at Ramlila, Khalistani terrorists detonated a bomb in Chandigarh. At least three people were killed and 25 were injured in the incident. [4]

Hindu migrant workers killed in Patiala

On October 21, 1983, a crowded train was derailed by Khalistani terrorists by unscrewing the rails. At least nineteen people were killed in the crash, most of them were agriculture labourers travelling to Punjab from eastern Uttar Pradesh. [4]

Four Hindu passengers killed on way to Moga

On November 18, 1983, Khalistani terrorists hijacked a Punjab Roadways bus that was travelling to Moga from Amritsar. Four Hindus were separated and killed in cold blood. India Today report suggested that seven non-Sikhs were there in the bus. One cobbler and a goldsmith were spared by the terrorists. One of the survivors was saved by a Nihang Sikh who told the terrorists that the Hindu was his son and got his hair cut a few days back. The terrorists hit the Hindu with the gun as a punishment for cutting hair and left him alive. [4]

The bloodied February of 1984

At the beginning of February, clashes between Sikhs and Hindus broke out in the state. Six people (mostly Hindus) were injured in a bomb blast at a wedding procession on February 9, 1984. On February 23, 1984, New York Times reported that at least eleven Hindus were killed and 27 were injured in a single day. On February 25, New York Times reported three incidents. Four Khalistani terrorists killed a Hindu in Amritsar and wounded four others. A Hindu was killed in a village in Gurdaspur. Four Hindus who were injured in previous attacks died during treatment at the hospital.

The murder of Ramesh Chandra, son of Jagat Narain

On May 12, 1984, Ramesh Chandra Chopra (Romesh Chandra Chopra), son of Jagat Narain was killed by the Khalistani terrorists. After Jagat Narain’s murder, Ramesh took over the post of editor for the Hind Samachar group. Kulbir Natt’s article in the Index Of Censorship journal’s 1991 edition [Link] noted gruesome details about the attack. Natt wrote that after Chandra took over the editorship of the Hind Samachar Group, the paper continued to “attack the intimidatory tactics of the extremists”.

Chandra denounced the Khalistani terrorists for using the Golden Temple as a “storehouse for arms”. He faced continuous threats since he took the post of editorship. On May 12, 1984, Khalistani terrorists shot him 64 times.

On the eve of his death, Chandra wrote a prophetic note in his editorial. He wrote, “No one knows whose turn will come next. All Punjab has become a slaughterhouse.” [5]

Undocumented deaths haunt Punjab’s history

During the research, we noticed that majority of the reports did not mention the names of the Hindus who had died in terrorist attacks. Many of the murders have not been documented properly in books, reports, and research papers. For example, in the book ‘Amritsar – Mrs Gandhi Last Battle’ [5] there was a mention that during March 1984 and April 1984, at least 80 people were killed and 107 were injured in terrorist attacks. However, we could not find reports verifying the details of who, when and where these 80 people were killed.

In June 1984, Operation Blue star happened and Bhindranwale along with many Khalistani terrorists was neutralized. However, it was not the end of the insurgency in Punjab. The Khalistani movement continued showing its presence for another decade. During that period, hundreds of Hindus were killed in separate attacks.

The attacks on Hindus have not stopped even in 2022. The murder of Sudhir Suri, a Hindu leader from Amritsar, Punjab, on November 4, 2022, has raised a lot of questions about the security of Hindus in the state. Suri was surrounded by police personnel when he was shot at least six times by the assailants standing just a few feet away.

‘Suspended for impersonating a comedian’: Elon Musk takes a brutal dig at Kathy Griffin after permanent suspension from Twitter

On Monday (November 7), Twitter suspended the handle of ‘comedian’ Kathy Griffin after she impersonated Elon Musk on the social media platform. Griffin shot to fame in 2017 after posting a disturbing image with a replica of Donald Trump’s severed head.

Media personality Benny Johnson informed, “Kathy Griffin has been permanently suspended from Twitter for impersonating Elon Musk.” The development came hours after the new ‘Twit Chief’ announced that accounts resorting to ‘malicious impersonation’ would be permanently banned from Twitter.

Taking potshots at Griffin, who describes herself as a ‘comedian’, Musk said she was banned for impersonating a comedian. “Actually, she was suspended for impersonating a comedian,” Musk tweeted while taking a swipe at her.

The new ‘Twit chief’ also added that Kathy Griffin could return to the social media platform if she is willing to pay $8 per month. “But if she really wants her account back, she can have it for $8,” Musk wrote.

To add salt to the wound, he also responded with a laughing emoji to a tweet by a parody account of Kathy Griffin, which said, “This is the first time I have made anyone laugh.”

Media personality Benny Johnson shared posts, created by Kathy Griffin, on the open-source social media platform Mastodon.

The female ‘comedian’ was seen complaining about the moderation policies of Twitter after she impersonated Elon Musk on the micro-blogging platform. “Elon just locked my Twitter acct…” she wrote in one post.

She also claimed on Mastodon that Musk was suffering a meltdown and that Twitter users were demanding the reinstatement of her account.

The controversial photoshoot of Kathy Griffin

In 2017, ‘comedian’ Kathy Griffin courted controversy for posing with a replica of a severed head of then-US President Donald Trump. The photo was captured by Tyler Shields. During the shoot, the duo was seen joking about moving to Mexico out of the ‘fear’ of being thrown in jail.

As per reports, the disturbing photoshoot cost her multiple jobs. She re-posted the image on Twitter in January 2020 after Trump ‘prematurely’ claimed that he was winning the Presidential election against Joe Biden.

In 2017, Donald Trump lashed out at the ‘comedian’ after the gory image surfaced on social media. He tweeted, “Kathy Griffin should be ashamed of herself. My children, especially my 11-year-old son, Barron, are having a hard time with this. Sick!”

Elon Musk cracks down on ‘malicious impersonation’ by Twitter handles

On Monday (November 7), ‘Chief Twit’ Elon Musk announced that accounts resorting to ‘malicious impersonation’ would be permanently suspended if they failed to highlight their parodic nature.

In a tweet, he informed, “Going forward, any Twitter handles engaging in impersonation without clearly specifying “parody” will be permanently suspended.”

Elon Musk added that while such Twitter accounts earlier received warnings, prior to the suspension, the rule would change going forward, especially if they have a blue tick already.

“Previously, we issued a warning before suspension, but now that we are rolling out widespread verification, there will be no warning. This will be clearly identified as a condition for signing up to Twitter Blue,” he emphasised.

The new Twitter owner also pointed out that any change in the names of the verified handles will also lead to the temporary loss of the blue badge. The development comes days after several verified Twitter accounts impersonated Elon Musk and tried to pass off as the ‘real’ owner of the platform.

Facebook parent company Meta planning to layoff thousands of employees: Report

On Sunday, November 6, the Wall Street Journal reported that Meta, Facebook’s parent company, plans to begin layoffs this week, affecting thousands of employees. The daily newspaper based in New York City cited people familiar with the matter as confirming that the job cuts were set to be the most significant at the company since it was founded in 2004.

An official announcement regarding the same is expected to come on Wednesday, November 9, 2022.

According to the persons who declined to be identified because they were not permitted to speak publicly, it was still unknown how many people would be laid off and in which departments.

As of September 30, Meta had about 87,000 employees worldwide across its different platforms, which include social media sites Facebook and Instagram as well as the messaging platform WhatsApp.

Notably, in a companywide meeting that took place in September 2022, Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg had said that the social network is freezing hiring across the board. He also warned that more layoffs are in the pipeline.

“Our plan is to steadily reduce headcount growth over the next year. Many teams are going to shrink so we can shift energy to other areas,” Zuckerberg had reportedly said during the last Meta earnings call.

Job cuts at Meta were expected for a while after the company’s revenue declined for two straight financial quarters. According to reports, Meta’s profits fell 52 percent year on year in the third quarter to $4.4 billion. The company’s share price has dropped by more than 70% this year, and its market value has dropped to $600 billion in the last year.

Twitter fires almost all employees in India

Twitter laid off most of its employees in India on November 4, 2022. Though the company has laid off employees in its marketing, communication and engineering department in large numbers, other departments of the company are also undergoing significant shuffle and layoffs including the engineering department.

The CEO of Twitter, Parag Agrawal, as well as the CFO and a few other senior executives were fired last week by the world’s richest businessman, Elon Musk, who started his tenure there. Musk has now begun a significant effort to reduce the company’s overall staff.  Layoffs in India are a component of the same exercise. The extent of this radical shift in the organizational structure can be gauged by the fact that Twitter has 300 employees in India and almost 250 employees across all the functions were fired by Elon Musk who was anyways not happy with the old management for their allegedly dishonest and untrue appearance during the acquisition deal.

Congress leader DK Shivakumar to skip ED summons to attend birthday celebrations of party worker

On November 6, Karnataka Congress Chief DK Shivakumar said in a statement that he would skip Enforcement Directorate (ED) summons in connection to the alleged National Herald Money Laundering case. Speaking to ANI, he said instead of appearing before ED, he would be attending a birthday party of a party worker.

Shivakumar said, “I will not appear before ED tomorrow, will be participating in a party worker’s birthday event.” Earlier, on November 5, he told ANI that he and his brother DK Suresh were summoned by ED to depose before the investigating officer on November 7. “I’ll take a decision on it today,” he had said.

Reports suggest that the brothers were summoned by the investigating agency to question them about the unspecified amount of money donated to Young India in the past. Young India is the company that owns National Herald. Earlier, ED had questioned Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the matter.

Shivakumar was earlier questioned on October 7 at the Delhi office of ED. Another questioning happened on September 19 where he was quizzed in another money laundering case linked to the alleged possession of disproportionate assets.

The case against Congress leader DK Shivakumar

In May 2022, ED filed charge sheet against DK Shivakumar under various Sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) before a Delhi court. The investigation agency stated that there is no account of Shivakumar’s assets worth about Rs 8 crore.

On September 3, 2019, DK Shivakumar was arrested by the ED for not cooperating during the investigation of him. He was arrested under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) after his links with corrupt Karnataka state government officials were established. The money laundering angle came to light after-tax officials raided Shivakumar’s residence are other locations in New Delhi, in August 2017, which led to the seizure of unaccounted cash worth Rs.8.59 crore without evidence of its source of income.

DK Shivakumar was granted bail in the same year in October after he moved the High Court for bail when his bail plea was rejected by a special CBI Court. Others penalised along with Shivakumar were his business associates Sachin Narayan and Sunil Kumar Sharma (owners of Sharma Travels) and Anjaneya Hanumant and Rajendran, the employees of Karnataka Bhavan in New Delhi, where the cash was found.

Clueless about ‘Kejriwalo-Savarnawalo’: Rajkot women attending Kejriwal rally attending it for these reasons

The crowd attending or not attending election rallies and roadshows are often used as barometers for the popularity of the leader. Except, viral videos over period of time have shown how more often than not, such ‘supporters’ are often clueless about the rally, roadshow and even the leader they’re supposed to be supporting. Such has been case with the recent roadshow held by Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal in Rajkot.

On Sunday, November 6, Arvind Kejriwal held a roadshow in Rajkot East constituency in Gujarat where the elections will be held in less than a month’s time.

Except, the local residents were quite clueless about Kejriwal and some didn’t even know whose roadshow they were attending and why. They’d come just because their neighbour, likely an AAP worker, asked them to.

In a video shared by BBC Gujarati, some women from Rajkot who attended Kejriwal’s roadshow were interviewed and asked for their comments.

When BBC Gujarati’s Rajnish asked a bunch of women on a tempo participating in Kejriwal’s roadshow, they had some interesting and amusing answers. One lady Hansaben Bharatbhai Parmar very proudly said that ‘Kejriwala’ had come to Rajkot. When asked who is Kejriwal, she said she does not know. “Yeh toh malum nahin kaun Kesriwala, Kejriwala… Savarnawala,” she said in Hindi. Savarna in Gujarati stands for broom, the election symbol for Aam Aadmi Party. However, when asked who exactly is Kejriwal, she said she does not know.

Another woman says she is attending rally of one ‘Miteshbhai’ who was her neighbour. She said Miteshbhai brought her to rally saying that if she attends it, the school fees will be waived off, water bill, electricity charges, will all be free. When asked which party the rally was for, she said it was Aam Aadmi Party’s rally but added she didn’t know who the leader is. She did mention Arvind Kejriwal’s name after being prompted by another lady standing by. She said that they were brought by someone but had come on their own.

When asked who is the chief minister of Gujarat, the lady quickly said it is Narendra Modi. Modi ceased to be Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2014 when he became the Prime Minister of India. Since then, Gujarat has had one state election also. When the camera pans and journalist asks other women who is the CM of Gujarat, they all say Narendra Modi. When he asked who is then the Prime Minister of India, Hansaben Bharatbhai Parmar replies how would they know when they have not stepped out of Rajkot.

He then asks whose roadshow they’re attending. Two women say she does not know the name. When he asks if they want to change the chief minister since they think Modi is the chief minister, one woman quips who would vote for her and said she picked up Aam Aadmi Party flag because she was given.

Kejriwal has also roped in Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for campaigning in pollbound state while the farmers of Punjab continue burning the stubble leading to hazardous air quality in Delhi and surrounding areas. However, despite being in power for so long, there has been no improvement in air quality in Delhi which turns into a gas chamber every year leading to scores of respiratory problems.

Having come on the plank of ‘changing politics’, Kejriwal seems to have changed himself and worsened the political discourse and lowered bar of decency.

USA: New Jersy lawmaker Raj Mukherji condemns anti-Hindu resolution passed by Teaneck Democratic Municipal Committee

State Assemblyman Raj Mukherji in the New Jersey legislature has condemned the anti-Hindu resolution approved by the Teaneck Democratic Municipal Committee, a branch of the New Jersey Democratic Party last month.

Sharing his statement of condemnation on Twitter, Mukherji wrote, “I condemn the Teaneck anti-Hindu resolution. The ties that bind the various South Asian diaspora communities in the US are much stronger – based on shared immigrant experiences – than the lines that divided their forebears. Let’s promote religious freedom and mutual respect.”

“I condemn unequivocally the far-reaching, overbroad, and defamatory resolution passed by the Teaneck Democratic Municipal Committee (TDMC) that has the dangerous potential of inciting more hate against American Hindus. I am grateful to the NJ Democratic State Committee for disavowing and condemning the TDMC resolution,” Mukherji stated.

While the TDMC resolution could have stopped at denouncing extremist ideologies and symbols of division, according to Mukherji, it instead abused an instructional opportunity by slapping unfounded accusations of terrorism and militant labels on laudable, entirely American faith-based organisations with compassionate activities. “And troublingly, the resolution could have the effect of catalyzing discrimination against Hindus in New Jersey 35 years after the Dotbuster attacks in my hometown of Jersey City instilled fear in the hearts of the elderly and other South Asian immigrants throughout the United States,” he added.

Mukherji remarked that he is devoted to recognising New Jersey’s rich variety and all members of the South Asian diaspora rather than planting seeds of discord as a senator who represents Jersey City, “which Ellis Island calls home and in whose waters Lady Liberty sits.”

On October 17, OpIndia reported that the Teaneck Democratic Municipal Committee, a section of the New Jersey Democratic Party, had approved a resolution labelling certain Hindu organisations as ‘dangerous hate groups’ and offshoots of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

The motion urged that the government classify a number of American Hindu organisations, including the Hindu American Foundation (HAF), the Vishwa Hindu Parishad of America (VHPA), and SEWA International, as “domestic branches” of “foreign hate groups.”

Sudhir Suri murder case: Khalistani group Sikhs For Justice offers Rs 10 lakh as legal aid to killer Sandeep Singh

On November 6, Khalistani terror group Sikhs For Justice (SFJ)’s chief Gurpatwant Singh Pannu offered Rs 10 lakh for legal aid to the shooter Sandeep Singh accused of Hindu leader Sudhir Suri’s murder. Suri was shot multiple times in broad daylight on November 4 in presence of police in Amritsar.

Designated terror organisation SFJ’s Pannu released a video message and announced Rs 10 lakh as legal aid for Singh. He said, “I am here to talk on a serious matter related to Punjab. A Hindu extremist Sudhir Suri has been seeking genocide of Sikhs. A Sikh named Sandeep Singh has been accused of killing him. It is essential to say when a political person is shot dead, it is not terrorism. Sandeep Singh did not indulge in a terror attack. He has not done a bomb blast at an Amritsar bus stand. He fired five shots and all bullets hit Sudhir Suri, who demanded genocide of Sikhs.”

Pannu added, “It has been two days [since the incident took place] and the Hindu extremist community has come together. The Indian media is siding with them equating Khalistan to terrorism. Khalistan is possible with weapons as well as votes. Sikhs For Justice is standing with Bhai Sandeep Singh. Sikhs For Justice will provide legal support to Sandeep Singh. There have been talks in Punjab asking the community to rise. Today, when Bhai Sandeep Singh rose, no one of political views or religious views came forward to stand with him. We will provide Rs 10 lakh for legal support. We will stand with Bhai Sandeep Singh. We will stand with every Sikh who rises for Khalistan, who rises to separate Punjab from India and fight with the merciless government.”

SFJ is a designated terror organisation

Sikhs For Justice was formed in 2007 to create ‘Khalistan’, a separate homeland for Sikhs. In 2019, the Ministry of Home Affairs banned the organisation under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Later, its chief Gurpatwant Singh Pannu was also designated as a terrorist.

Pakistani link to Sudhir Suri’s murder

Following the brutal murder of Shiv Sena Taksali chief Sudhir Suri, pro-Khalistan Pakistani Gopal Singh Chawla released a video praising the killers and named Hindu leaders Amit Arora and Nishant Singh along with Kisan Congress leader Mand as the next targets. The police restricted Hindu leaders’ movement and asked them to stay at home. Security has been increased around the residents of Hindu leaders.
