Benjamin Netanyahu to return as Israel Prime Minister

Former Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is poised to return as the new Prime Minister of the Jewish State. According to exit polls on Tuesday night, Netanyahu’s bloc, which includes Likud, Religious Zionist Party (RZP), United Torah Judaism (UTJ) and Shas, crossed the 61-seat threshold and is likely to form the next coalition government, local media said.

Israelis went to vote for the 5th time in four years on Tuesday in a large number. Benjamin Netanyahu, the longest serving Prime Minister is expected to return to power. In 2019, Netanyahu was charged with bribery, fraud and breach of trust which he has denied. Early on Wednesday, Netanyahu told his supporters that his party is close to forming the government. He added that if the exit polls hold, they will likely form the right-wing national government.

As many as 71.3% voters turned out for voting, highest since 2015. Netanyahu government was toppled last year after being 12 years in power. Netanyahu had vowed to come back to power as soon as possible. His rival and current prime minister, Yair Lapid, however, said that nothing is decided yet. Israeli televisions are predicting 61-62 seats for Netanyahu bloc in the 120 seat knesset (Parliament).

Anti-Hindu professor Chris Allen, appointed to conduct ‘independent inquiry’ into Leicester violence, steps down after Hindu organisations protest

Professor Dr. Chris Allen, a known Islamist sympathizer and known for his prejudiced views about Hindus was recently named by Leicester mayor peter Soulsby to lead an ‘independent inquiry’ into the Leicester violence. After the local Hindus residents raised objections over his selection, Allen stepped down.

When Peter Soulsby made the announcement on Wednesday, October 26, he said Dr. Allen, an associate professor of hate crimes at the University of Leicester (UoL), came highly recommended to him by a “range of people” from varied backgrounds. However, within 24 hours, the decision had been widely condemned by local councilors, several local Hindu organizations, and on social media.

Chris Allen has now “reluctantly” decided to pull out, stating that he no longer believes he can conduct the review impartially “in the current climate.”

“I have reluctantly taken the decision to step down from the role because I no longer feel confident that my team and I are capable of conducting the review in such a way that the resulting findings would meet the necessary levels of academic scrutiny,” Dr. Allen said.

Professor Allen also claimed that his pulling out from the review was not in response to the allegations made against him on social media or the ‘hate’ he has been receiving ever since the announcement of his appointment.

“It is important to stress that my decision was not made in response to the unprecedented hatred directed at me in previous weeks or the false accusations circulating on social media.”

Mayor Peter Soulsby, who commissioned the review, said he understood the decision and will seek to appoint another person or organization to carry it forward, in a way that has the confidence of all the concerned parties.

“I think that it is important to proceed with a review, and will be taking cues locally and nationally on whether any individual or organization could take it forward in a way that has the confidence of all concerned parties,” he said.

Notably, the man behind the controversial appointment, Leicester Mayor Peter Soulsby, had previously met Islamist Majid Freeman, who incited riots against the Hindu community.

“I have today been appointed lead for the independent review into the recent disturbances in East Leicester,” Dr. Allen wrote in a tweet. A tremendous honor for me personally and professionally…”

Soon after the news of Chris Allen’s appointment broke, representatives of 15 Hindu organizations reportedly, vowed to boycott the inquiry led by Dr. Allen.

In a statement on Thursday (October 27), they said: “Though we do not make any judgments regarding the presence of any extreme Islamist influence in the unrest, to make a conclusion prior to the review highlights Allen’s inability to remain independent.”

Hindu organizations had also expressed “little confidence” in Mayor Peter Soulsby’s decision-making process after he had previously blamed the Leicester violence on Hindutva. They also accused the Mayor of breaking his promise by announcing the investigation findings before the end of the festive season.

Harborough MP Neil O Brien took to Twitter to inform about the letter he wrote to Mayor Peter Soulsby and wrote, “The letter I sent to Sir Peter Soulsby today, Dr. Allen has now rightly gone.”

Dr Chris Allen and his anti-Hindu archetypes and his love for Islamists

Chris Allen, 52, is an associate professor at the University of Leicester. He is an expert on ‘Islamophobia, hate, and extremism,’ according to his Twitter profile (which has now been deleted).

Screengrab of Dr Chris Allen’s now-deleted Twitter profile

In September of this year, he authored a propaganda piece in The Conversation in which he blamed the Leicester violence on Hindus while absolving Islamists of any wrongdoing.

“Some will interpret this as Islamist extremism.” Despite the lack of evidence, research shows that “a key trope of Islamophobia is the conflation of all things, Islam, with extremism,” he claimed.

“The mere involvement of Muslims will be evidence enough for some to jump to such a conclusion,” Dr. Allen said, blaming the violence on “Hindutva elements.”

Notably, in addition to Hindu organizations, several reputed journalists have raised concerns about Dr. Chris Allen’s lack of ethical and academic objectivity in his writings.

“It’s a grave error to appoint Dr. Chris Allen to review communal violence in Leicester,” wrote ‘The Daily Telegraph’ columnist Nick Timothy. His writing demonstrates that his conclusions have already been formed. In a nutshell, he blames British Hindus and claims reports of Muslim involvement are “Islamophobic.”

The anti-Hindu scholar believes in the Islamist conspiracy theory regarding the deadly September 11 attacks. Dr. Chris Allen was heard saying in a video that has since surfaced on social media, “So this is something that I can say in a rational objective way.” The BBC reported one of the buildings collapsing before it (actually did).”

“I saw that video on YouTube, and you have the BBC person reporting it while the building is still standing behind him… “What is going on here?” implied the Associate Professor at the University of Leicester.

Dr. Chris Allen was accompanied by Riaz Khan, a 9/11 conspiracy theorist and Islamist who had previously attempted to blame the Hindu community for attacks perpetrated by his co-religionists.

OpIndia had conducted extensive reporting on the anti-Hindu Leceister violence that gave sleepless nights to Islamist sympathizer media outlets and several Islamists. OpIndia had documented how Islamists ran disinformation campaigns against the Hindu community in Leicester, created a solid foundation for violence, and carried out targeted attacks. We also exposed how leftist news portals tried to shield Islamists and blame the Leicester violence on Indian Hindus.

As The Wire scapegoats Devesh over its Meta fiasco, here is why Siddharth Varadarajan is equally responsible for its forgery and fraud

0

On October 29, The Wire filed a complaint against its ex-employee and one of the key actors in the Meta Vs The Wire saga, Devesh Kumar. In its complaint, The Wire claimed that it was Devesh who brought all the forged documents, including the Instagram PIR report on the post that was taken down, emails, communication with Instagram source and more. The founding editor of The Wire, Siddharth Varadarajan and its reporter Jahnavi Sen, who initially broke the story of an Instagram post critical of Yogi Adityanath being taken out, were shown innocent victims in the complaint.

Earlier on the same day, Bharatiya Janata Party’s IT Cell Chief Amit Malviya, who was blamed for the post takedown using his XCheck powers at Meta, had filed a complaint against The Wire, its editors and reporter. In his complaint, Malviya did not mention Devesh Kumar. An FIR was registered, and subsequently, a raid was conducted on the matter at The Wire’s editors’ residence.

After The Wire’s complaint against Devesh, a scenario was being built to whitewash the involvement of Siddharth and Jahnavi from the reports. The members of the left-liberal cabal were busy writing tweets and threads on Twitter providing their point of view on the matter and insinuating that The Wire was duped not only in the Meta fiasco but also in the Tek Fog stories that were published in January this year.

Following the raids, the attempts to clear the image of The Wire and its editors have increased exponentially. From calling it an attack on already fragile Indian Democracy and freedom of the press to making it look like a political agenda of the ruling party, BJP, every arrow in the quiver is being deployed for the purpose.

However, if we look at the statements made by Siddharth while The Wire was still defending its reports claiming a nexus between Meta and BJP, the story appears to be entirely different from what is being painted at the moment. These statements show that he was complicit in the alleged conspiracy, and blaming Devesh for everything would not cut it.

Though some tweets, along with the reports, were deleted by Siddarth, some important tweets are still on Twitter, where he himself confessed to being completely involved in the story and verification process.

In the complaint, The Wire claimed that all the electronic documents, verification, etc., were provided by Devesh, and The Wire did not have any role in it. Based on information and documents provided by Devesh following the story published by The Wire on October 6, another story was published on October 10. The Wire claimed that the October 15 and October 17 reports were also based on “electronic documentation including emails and videos provided by Devesh Kumar, purportedly from Instagram and Meta and two independent experts.”

If we do not follow the story from the beginning, it is easier to believe that The Wire, a “well-reputed news portal” at the international level, got duped by a single person. Not to forget, some of the messiahs of The Wire on social media are also pointing fingers towards a larger conspiracy against The Wire at the behest of the ruling party.

However, if we consider the statements made by Siddharth between October 10 and October 31 on different platforms, it gets much clearer that more persons from The Wire were involved in the matter.

‘We know and met Meta sources’ – the October 12 thread

On October 12, two things happened. One, Siddharth wrote a lengthy thread on Twitter trying to overrule what Meta’s officials had suggested. Second, Meta issued an official press note giving an opportunity to The Wire to stop the reports on Meta by saying, “We accept scrutiny of our content decisions, but we fundamentally reject these false allegations based on what we believe to be fabricated evidence. We hope that The Wire is the victim of this hoax, not the perpetrator,” in their official press note that can be read here.

Siddharth started the thread “debunking” the claims that they could have been “played” by unknown elements who wanted to “discredit” the portal. He called the claims ridiculous and said, “Our stories came from multiple Meta sources—whom we know, have met and verified.” Siddharth was absolutely clear in his statement that someone from The Wire met and verified what they claimed in the reports from multiple Meta sources.

However, in the complaint, they did not mention any other alleged source and blamed solely Devesh for the mess. Interestingly, The Wire also claimed that one of the employees had a “personal relationship” with the Meta source that was later deleted from the statement quietly.

Further, into the thread, Siddharth said The Wire had reached out to Meta before October 6 story to get details of the takedown. However, as per him, Meta did not provide any information. He claimed after the October 6 story, they reached out to the Meta sources as part of the investigation. If Devesh was the one brought all the “forged evidence” to The Wire after the October 6 story, as claimed in the complaint by The Wire, who were they in contact with at the Meta after October 6? Why no screenshots of the communication sent to Meta before the October 6 story were ever published by The Wire? In the first story, they did mention that a communication was received from Meta’s PR agency but no further details were ever mentioned.

In the next tweet, he claimed that the sources at Meta provided them with the documents about the takedown. Interestingly, in the complaint, The Wire claimed these documents were sent by Devesh, who had claimed that his “friend” at Meta, identified as Philip Chua, sent it to him. If they got all the documents from Devesh via Chua, why Siddharth claimed that the document was forwarded to them by their Meta “sources” upon request?

Siddharth Varadarajan
Source: Twitter

Siddharth added that one of their sources at Meta did not know who Amit Malviya was. He categorically denied Meta’s claim that the documents were fabricated based on this particular “fact”. Again, Siddharth appeared to have claimed there were multiple people at Meta that were helping them. So far, The Wire has provided no information, screenshot of communication or anything that could have proved that they were in contact with sources within Meta.

Source: Twitter

After Andy Stone denied the allegations and said the documentation appeared to be fabricated, Siddharth claimed to reach out even more sources at Meta to confirm. He said, “They were able to quickly access and share Stone’s email. The idea that trusted sources with whom we have ongoing relations would fake the email is [laughable].” For what it’s worth, Meta should investigate who these sources were that “quickly accessed” Andy’s email and send it to The Wire!

Siddharth Varadarajan
Source: Twitter

According to Siddharth, the sources were so into The Wire that they were willing to sabotage their own employer and provide not only the screenshot but the “complete header” of the emails. He further claimed that if The Wire ever disclosed the header information, it could have jeopardised the identity of the sources, and they very well knew it before sending the details.

Source: Twitter

The identity of these sources, however, remains hidden to date. Were there any sources, or were these documents fabricated, forged and used by The Wire with an intention to malign the image of Amit Malviya and the BJP? It is a million-dollar question that needs an answer through a detailed investigation by relevant investigation agencies at the earliest.

Siddharth claimed The Wire personnel contacted one of the sources at Meta

In an October 19 interview with the Platformer, Siddharth categorically said that his colleagues at The Wire met one of the sources. When he was asked about the sources they mentioned in the stories, Siddharth told Platformer that there were two sources involved. Notably, Siddharth Varadarajan had claimed to be in contact with multiple sources at Meta. If multiple sources mean “two sources”, well, he needs to work on his communication skills.

Siddharth Varadarajan
Source: Excerpt from Platformer interview.

Anyway, he further added that there were two sources involved. Source A provided the Instagram story, and Source B provided Andy’s email. He claimed Devesh was in contact with both sources and had met and interacted with them. Devesh was the only person who met the sources in person.

Source A, as per the complaint, was Philip Chua. Source B is still unkown. If Devesh met and interacted with Chua, did he go to Singapore for that? Chua is posted in Singapore. OpIndia is trying to reach out to Chua and get a comment from him on the matter. Notably, The Wire claimed that Devesh confessed to having fabricated everything.

Coming to Source B, The Wire claimed that this particular person was in contact with “a number of his colleagues”. They had interacted with that person going back four to five months. As of now, Source B appears to be a ghost or figment of the imagination of none other than Siddharth Varadarajan himself, as in the complaint, there is no mention of this particular Source B.

Siddharth Varadarajan was involved in Tek Fog stories

When Platformer asked Siddharth about the Tek Fog stories, he said that a particular investigation should not be made just about Devesh as he was equally involved in it. By that time, Tek Fog stories were not retracted. That happened on October 23. It can be assumed that by the time he gave an interview to Platformer, he did not let go of Tek Fog, which was another dubious work by The Wire in association with Devesh and Ayushman Kaul of logically.ai.

Source: Excerpt from Platformer interview

He had said, “I don’t think we should make this about Devesh, frankly. This should be equally about me, I was hands-on involved in the story. The point is that, yes there were some questions raised by some aspects of Tek Fog, but a lot of it actually was validated.

Tek Fog is a story we are continuing to work on, and we have found more corroborative material on that, so I am very reluctant to diss Tek Fog. If our review concludes that this set of stories [on Meta] doesn’t add up, it doesn’t mean the Tek Fog stories weren’t up to the mark.” It is unclear if The Wire will touch Tek Fog again. Maybe during the 2024 elections, but as of now, it will only backfire because of Devesh’s involvement in the said investigation. Not to forget, Devesh and Ayushman had claimed to work for two years on the “investigation”.

No credit to Devesh in the third follow-up story with Andy’s email

On October 11, Siddharth tweeted that he and Jahnavi worked on a story where they got their hands on Andy Stone’s angry email questioning how the PIR report got leaked. That story did not credit Devesh for the documents. The Wire’s Siddharth and Jahnavi seem to be in the mood to take all the credit for the story, no matter what the reason was.

The Wire cannot wash its hands of responsibility

In most of the statements sent out by Siddharth Varadarajan, he categorically said The Wire verified documents etc., with multiple sources. His name as co-author of the stories clearly points toward the fact that he was informed about the content of the reports, and he understood what was written. Throwing Devesh under the bus when caught red-handed and issuing an apology will not clear The Wire, its editors and reports named from the fact that they fabricated evidence, used fabricated evidence, did forgery, attempted to defame someone and kept on forging documents whenever they were caught red-handed.

It is noteworthy that the wrong dates in one of their explanations were one of the major turning points as they edited the screenshots with errors that raised red flags among those experts as well who had trust in The Wire. Not to forget, Ujjwal Kumar of Microsoft categorically said that he had communicated to The Wire not to use his name, but The Wire went ahead and did it. That means The Wire was aware of the fabrication of the documents but decided not to rectify the issue when it was still controllable.

‘No one knows where Devesh lives’

Journalist Jahangir Ali said in a tweet that no one knows where Devesh lives. How is it possible that The Wire and other companies he worked with did not ask for his address? Devesh was presumably being paid by The Wire for months, although he claimed in a now-deleted tweet that he has not drawn a salary from the organisation for months now. He seemed to have graduated from a reputed college in India. Notably, a copy of The Wire’s complaint has not been made available on social media. Does it contain Devesh’s address? Ayushman Kaul, who worked with him for two years, does he has his address or know about his whereabouts?

The privacy of a person is important. No one should be doxxed. If his address is not available in the public domain, it must not be leaked. However, someone somewhere must be in touch with him, and only Devesh can explain how he managed to “dupe” The Wire or whether the far-left propaganda outlet has sacrificed him at the altar of salvaging its rapidly dwindling credibility.

Kerala airport closes its runway and suspends all flights for five hours to allow passage to Lord Padmanabhaswamy’s procession

0

Thiruvananthapuram International Airport once again closed its runway and suspend flight operations for five hours on Tuesday, to allow the ceremonial procession of the famous Padmanabhaswamy temple to pass through the runway.

According to reports, because one of the temple’s “Arattu” processions, which mark the end of the Alpassi festival, falls on Tuesday, the airport officials here have notified that flight services will be suspended for five hours from 4 pm to 9 PM.

Domestic and international services during this period have been rescheduled. An airport source said that at least 10 flights have been rescheduled for the ritualist procession as of now.

“To enable and facilitate the smooth continuation of a centuries-old ritual by Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple for the Alpassi Arattu procession, through the runway of the Thiruvananthapuram International airport, the flight services shall remain suspended from 1600 to 2100 hours on the 1st November 2022,” the airport management said here in a statement.

“There is an Aaratu mandapam near the runway where the temple idols are being kept for some time as part of the ritual during the procession. We are keeping it with all sanctity. We are facilitating the passage of the traditional procession. The flight companies are also extending all cooperation to retain the legacy,” the source told PTI.

This is, however, not the first time the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport has suspended flights to enable the smooth passage of the ceremonial procession of the famous Padmanabhaswamy temple. This is a bi-annual practice that has been taking place even before the airport was established in 1932.

In fact, even when the Adani Group took over the administration of the airport last year, the practice of closing it down for the ritualistic procession continued without fail.

The Arattu festival at the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple is a unique event for the people of Thiruvananthapuram. As part of this, processions are held twice a year (Alpassi and Panguni Festivals) from the temple to Shankhumukham Beach for the holy bath (Arattu) in the sea. The procession is led by the Travancore royal family. Many cultural activities take place on the temple grounds following ritualistic practice.

According to the traditional practice, the processional idols of the temple deities are carried to the sea behind the airport for a holy dip twice a year in a ceremonial march.

The airport releases a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) twice a year before the runway closes for the bi-annual Alpassi festival, which takes place in October-November, and the Panguni festival, which takes place in March-April.

After a dip in the sea off Shankumugham beach, the idols would be taken back to the shrine in a procession lit by traditional lamps and torches which marks the conclusion of the festival.

Usual suspects peddle misinformation to insinuate victims were planted ahead of PM Modi’s visit to Morbi: Here’s the truth

0

Social media is awash with two juxtaposed images of a man—one with a gauze rolled around his right knee—and another with a plaster on his right leg—to insinuate that victims of the Morbi bridge collapse were planted ahead of PM Modi’s visit to the town to meet kin of victims and those injured in the tragic accident.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the scene of the collapsed Morbi bridge. Several teams from the NDRF and Indian Army have been deployed in the region where the search operation is being undertaken in the Machchhu River.

Amidst this crucial visit by the prime minister, the left-liberal gang resorted to all kinds of efforts to undermine the visit. Several left-liberal users and so-called journalists spread fake news by making fake claims about images of the victims. Twitter User Abhijit Dipke shared an image of a survivor and stated that he got a plaster overnight just because PM Modi was visiting.

Image: Twitter(Abhijit Dipke)

Vinod Kapri, a journalist turned filmmaker, repeated the same message from Abhijit by quoting it in a tweet.

Morbi

Abusive troll Swati Chaturvedi, who is referred to as a journalist also took to Twitter and used the same image on similar lines in an attempt to tarnish the image of Gujarat and demean the visit by the Prime Minister. Swati wrote, “The permanent patient. How come the same gent met Vaghela & then Modi today? Is this the Gujarat model?”

Morbi

Rohini Singh, a ‘journalist’ working for The Wire, the left-leaning publication that made headlines for its hit job against Amit Malviya over its Meta stories, also partook in propagating the misleading claim.

Morbi

All these tweets had the same image implying that a survivor was planted and his leg was plastered as PM Modi’s visit came up in the hospital.

Contrary to insinuations from left-liberals, the man got his leg plastered on October 31 itself

However, this is not true. The patient had a plaster from earlier and was not something new. As shared by Twitter user Facts, the plaster was not done on November 1 as claimed by Vinod Kapri and others but actually existed from earlier than October 31.

The fact is evident from a video report by Lallantop dated October 31 where it can be seen that the patient had a plaster on his leg from early on. The same person can be seen in the video from 03:16 minutes onwards.

These tweets by so-called journalists and haters of the Prime Minister and the Bharatiya Janata Party underscore the firm resolve of the left-liberal gang to discredit and demean the government for any effort put in and policy executed. This is not the first time such fake news and misinformation has come up with the intention to malign the image of the prime Minister and the ruling dispensation.

The Morbi bridge collapse

On Sunday, October 30, 2022, the cable bridge over the Machchhu River in Morbi, Gujarat, collapsed, killing over 130 people as they all fell into the river. Screams of desperation replaced the earlier merriment as hundreds of bridge revellers perished in an instant. Rescue operations are currently being conducted in and around the river.

According to the reports, the 150-year-old bridge located 300 km from Vadodara could take the weight of only about 125 people but there were around 400 people on the bridge when the incident happened. A total of 180 were successfully rescued by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams.

The state government has announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh for each of those killed in the accident and Rs 50,000 for those injured. The Prime Minister also has announced monetary assistance of Rs. 2 lakh for each of the victims’ families.

How the Modi government spearheaded the largest disinvestment initiatives in Indian history: Reports

The 8 years of the Modi government account for a total of 72% of revenue earned through the disinvestment of government-owned assets, reported The Print.

From time to time, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reiterated his vision of pulling the government out of businesses that it had ventured into during the ‘socialist era.’

Having realised the need to get rid of loss-making assets, which are funded by taxpayers’ money, the government accelerated the disinvestment process during his tenure.

The recent data analysis by The Print reveals how the BJP government at the Centre has been firm in its commitment towards disinvestment. The news outlet assumed average year-on-year inflation to be 6% and based its analysis on data sourced from RBI and the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM).

According to The Print, the proceeds from disinvestment collected post-2014 amounted to 72% of all revenue accrued since 1991. When inflation was factored in (at an average annual rate of 6%), the Modi era still accounted for 57% of disinvestment revenue.

Disinvestment of government-owned assets began during the reign of P. V. Narasimha Rao. The Print reported that about ₹17557 crores (₹91,800 crores in today’s value) were earned between 1991-1999.

Screengrab of the article by The Print

Disinvestment received a major boost during the tenure of late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee (1998-2004). A total of ₹27,599 crores (about ₹93,300 crores in today’s value) were collected through the sale of government-run businesses during that period.

According to The Print, the Congress-led UPA-I government (2004-2009) could raise only ₹11,591 crores (₹32,000 crores in today’s value) through disinvestments due to its post-poll alliance with Left parties.

When the alliance fell apart over the infamous India–United States Civil Nuclear Agreement in 2008, the disinvestment process got a new breather and raised ₹1.2 lakh crore (or ₹2.4 lakh crore in today’s value) during UPA-II (2009-2014).

Proceeds from disinvestment between 1991 and September 2022, graph via Ramandeep Kaur/ ThePrint

In comparison to UPA-II, the Modi government generated a whopping ₹3.2 lakh crore (or ₹4.7 lakh crore in today’s value) in its first term. The Print reported that the Covid-19 pandemic affected the momentum of disinvestment of government-run businesses.

Between 2019 and September 2022 (including the two years of the pandemic), the disinvestment process generated about ₹1.26 lakh crore (₹1.48 lakh crore in today’s value). It implies that the Modi government raised a total of ₹6.19 lakh crore (adjusted for inflation) through this route during the past 8 years.

Reportedly, disinvestment serves three important purposes – helps in balancing the fiscal deficit, opens new market opportunities for price sectors, and ensures fair compensation to the government for the sale of its assets.

Recently, the Modi government concluded the successful disinvestment of Air India. In a press statement, Tata Group said that it would like to acknowledge Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to reforms and faith in India’s entrepreneurship spirit, which made this historic transaction possible.

“Our Prime Minister has in action demonstrated what his commitment to ‘Minimum Government, Maximum Governance’ means,” added the company.

According to The Print, the government has put forth a disinvestment target of ₹65000 crores for FY 2022-2023 (out of which ₹24,544 crores has already been achieved). This is a conservative target, judging from the 8-year track record of the Modi government.

Gradually, the government is planning to rid itself of loss-making assets and maintain a ‘minimum presence’ in strategic sectors such as atomic energy, space, defence, transport, telecommunications, power, petroleum, coal, and financial services.

Bihar: Maulana forces Dalit youth to spit and lick over an affair with a Muslim girl, police refrains from invoking SC/ST Act against the accused

Three persons have been detained in Samastipur district in Bihar in connection with a case in which a Dalit youth was thrashed and forced to lick spit because he was having an affair with a Muslim girl. The police, however, have not invoked sections of the SC/ST Act against the accused.

Firoz was one of the accused. Aside from that, the police claim to have identified two other suspects based on surveillance video. Their names are Anil and Vinod Paswan. Alauddin, the Maulana who appears in the viral video forcing the youth to spit and then lick it 5 times with his tongue, is still at large.

Chowkidar Ram Bharos Paswan, the complainant in this incident, has accused 50 to 60 unknown people in his complaint.

The incident reportedly happened on Wednesday, October 19. Locals in Bihar’s Samastipur district thrashed the Dalit youth after they found he had an affair with a Muslim girl. In the video that has gone viral, a Maulana forced the youth to spit and then lick it 5 times to humiliate him over his relationship with a Muslim girl.

OpIndia spoke with Vibhutipur Sandeep Kumar, the station’s in-charge, about the incident. He informed us that the case had been filed under sections 348 and 323 of the IPC. According to the station in charge, the accused, Alauddin, has not yet been apprehended, but his son, Firoz, has been apprehended.

According to SHO Sandeep, the arrest and police action were based on evidence collected and ongoing research.

Bihar refrains from invoking SC/ST Act after Maulana humiliates Dalit youth

According to the information, Section 348 of the IPC follows an assault on a person by holding a person prisoner and forcing him to confess to a crime. Section 323 of the IPC, on the other hand, is applied after a routine assault. In these circumstances, the maximum penalty is three years in prison.

On the issue of not including sections of the SC/ST Act in the case, Sandeep Kumar stated that the decisions are taken by the higher authorities and they only follow instructions. According to the SHO, no police press release has been issued regarding the three arrests made thus far, which is the responsibility of senior officials, he added.

Notably, Ajay Kumar, the Communist Party’s Vibhutipur MLA, said earlier that there were members from Raju Paswan’s community among the gathering and that whatever decision was made was made by the Gram Panchayat.

The issue could be resolved by talking to the youth and the girl: The village head

OpIndia spoke with Shravan Paswan, the head of Mahesari village in the Ujiyarpur Police Station area, where the victim resides. Expressing shock at the incident, Shravan said he could not understand why Raju was thrashed so mercilessly.

He opined that the situation could have been settled amicably by talking to the youth and the girl. The village head told us that the victim, Raju, had been made to sit in the village panchayat forcefully and that they had rescued him once they reached there.

Shravan further stated that neither the victim nor the accused wanted any type of police action in the case.

Recalling the incident, Shravan said that when he noticed the hostile atmosphere in the hamlet, his primary concern was Raju’s safety. He wanted to bring him back safely at whatever cost, said Sharvan, adding that following the incident, some officers from the Vibhutipur police station had visited their village for questioning.

According to the village head, Raju’s family members persuaded him to stay in the house out of fear, which is why when the police officers came to the village they could not interrogate him. Shravan dismissed the report of Raju fleeing from the village and maintained that he is at home.

Don’t have a husband, who will fight our case: Victim Raju Paswan’s mother

Manju Devi, the mother of victim Raju Paswan, spoke with OpIndia. Raju’s mother stated that her son and the girl attended the same coaching class and that on the day of the incident, the girl had requested Raju to drop her home. She denied that her son was in a romantic relationship with the girl. She said they were only friends. Manju Devi stated that Raju is still a minor. She added that his father had passed away.

Manju Devi described the inhuman conduct committed against her child as unlawful but stated that she does not want to pursue legal action since she has no one in her family to defend the case, among other things. Raju, according to his mother Manju Devi, has not gone anywhere and is still at home.

According to media reports, the Dalit youth is a resident of Mahesari village in the Ujiyarpur Police Station area. He was having an affair with a Muslim girl from Chakhabib village, which is under the jurisdiction of the Vibhutipur police station. On the day of the incident, he had taken his bike to her village to drop her off. Eventually, the crowd apprehended him. The youngster is said to have been severely thrashed before being made to spit and lick 5 times on the orders of one Maulana.

I listened to The Wire’s ‘tech team’ talk about Tek Fog absurdity for over 90 minutes so you don’t have to

On Monday night, Delhi Police raided the homes and office of The Wire personnel named in the FIR filed on behest of BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya over fabricated documents used in stories to target him and accuse him of having superpowers to get any post on social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram removed instantaneously. The left cabal has come together to cry an attack on press since as per them, The Wire had ‘made a mistake’ and retracted a ‘wrong story’ and ‘apologised’. In reality, The Wire published multiple stories based on multiple fabricated documents and later, while retracting stories, never apologised to the subjects in the stories they had named, like Amit Malviya, Meta, Andy Stone, Ujjwal Kumar, and others. How is it an apology if you do not apologise to the subject of your fraud?

Tek Fog absurdity

But before this fraud was exposed, The Wire had come up with the ‘secret app’ Tek Fog absurdity, which despite denials by parties involved, The Wire got away with. The Wire had named two Indian companies, Persistent Systems and Mohalla Tech Pvt Ltd as being involved in the ‘secret app’ and despite denials, The Wire never withdrew these stories. These stories on Tek Fog were written by Devesh Kumar and Ayushman Kaul.

The Wire has now claimed they are victims in this and that Devesh Kumar, who was associated with The Wire as a consultant, provided these documents and has filed a police complaint against him. Along with this, The Wire has also taken down Tek Fog-related stories by Devesh and Ayushman, while claiming innocence. The Wire has distanced themselves and claimed how they relied on documents provided by Devesh and pushed him under the bus in Meta stories. But then, what about Tek Fog stories? And does Kaul get to get away with it because of his father’s political connections? Ayushman Kaul is the son of National Conference spokesperson Dr Sameer Kaul.

Devesh and Ayushman, in their Tek Fog saga, had claimed that BJP was using an app to manipulate trends and automatically spew hate online. According to The Wire, Tek Fog has some kind of superpower, which has capabilities that even the NSA of the USA does not have. According to Wire, hacking top apps like Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp etc is child’s play using the app, and all security features of those platforms vanish with this magical piece of software. And just these two men in the world had till now ‘verified’ it all.

The trigger for Tek Fog was a few tweets by an absolutely obscure Twitter account by the name ‘Aarthi Sharma’. The Twitter account was created in April 2020. You can read in detail about the Twitter account here. ‘Aarthi Sharma’ was also the first account ever to tweet about ‘Tek Fog’.

‘Aarthi Sharma’ tweeting about Tek Fog

On his now-deleted personal blog, Devesh had claimed that Kaul approached him to work on the Tek Fog exposé as Devesh had prior experience of ‘running an IT cell’

To put things into perspective, in December 2019, Devesh Kumar put up a post on Reddit that he was running a parallel IT cell with automated tweets and hijacking trending topics on Twitter to trend anti-CAA trends.

Devesh Kumar claiming he was running parallel IT Cell

The ‘Aarthi Sharma’ Twitter account has been inactive since July 31, 2020 but in January 2022 when The Wire report on Tek Fog was out, Devesh and Ayushman had claimed they had been investigating the app for 20 months. All their 20 months of ‘investigation’ was based on screenshots only. At no point in time, did either Devesh or Ayushman actually access ‘Tek Fog’. And going by how the Meta story has gone, the fictitious Tek Fog app, which does not exist on Play Store, Apple store or anywhere else, the screenshots used by The Wire were quite likely fake.

Ask Me Anything – by Tek Fog Team of The Wire

Soon after the Tek Fog stories were out, The Wire team did an AMA (Ask Me Anything) session on Reddit and YouTube. I listened to their entire conversation so you don’t have to.

Ayushman Kaul and Devesh Kumar go live on YouTube where The Wire Founding Editor Varadarajan introduces them as those who led the investigation into the Tek Fog app “used by supporters of BJP to spread disinformation and hate and all kind of nasty things online at a scale that appears unprecedented”.

Varadarajan claims he is not a ‘tech person’ but he said he would answer questions related to editorial policy and broad political implications of ‘Tek Fog’. Devesh and Ayushman were to answer all ‘tech-related’ questions. Devesh then starts with the ‘hard proofs’ he had with regard to the investigation and ‘outline’ features of the ‘investigation’. Ayushman Kaul then explains how this was a ‘significant investigation’. Again, this entire ‘investigation’ is based ONLY on screenshots provided by the ‘source’, who I am willing to bet does not exist except in their imagination.

Tek Fog features

Kaul claims ‘Tek Fog’ had the ability to auto retweet, and auto-reply to ‘targeted categories’ of people who were categorised based on their occupation, age, and gender. Kaul claims that the ‘operatives’ would ‘remotely hijack’ personal WhatsApp accounts on individuals and ‘impersonate’ them to send messages to ‘all contacts’ or ‘frequently contacted’. The words used to describe ‘Tek Fog’ users make them appear like they are some sort of underground terror network. Except, Tek Fog does not exist.

Kaul claims they had many rounds of interaction with experts including the editorial team at The Wire and other ‘investigative agencies’. Kaul claims they have independently verified all the claims they made in Tek Fog. Which would mean, The Wire’s editorial team, including Siddharth Varadarajan who was present in the video, were aware of everything that was being put out by the duo as ‘evidence’. Interesting how at no point did Varadarajan ask for sources other than screenshots. How did it even pass the smell test?

Devesh then claims their ‘anonymous source’ had revealed their identity to them and they had verified their bank statements and their ‘pay slips’. Apparently, their biggest investigation was about ‘manipulating Twitter trends’ via Tek Fog. For those who’ve been around Twitter, IT cells of various political parties as well as news channels regularly trend hashtags and it is not rocket science.

In fact, at the time of this report, the Congress IT cell is trending hashtag, “#Go_Back_Modi“.

Congress trending #Go_Back_Modi

Please note that along with the screenshot, I have linked back to the trending topic page of the said hashtag. This is how normal people back up their claims. Somehow, it slipped Varadarajan’s mind to question his ‘tech experts’.

Coming back, most Twitter users by now have learned to ignore such trends by all political parties because they are lame and annoying, to put it mildly. To carry out an ‘investigation’ on this can cater only to those who fell for The Wire stories on Tek Fog and Meta.

Bot menace

Devesh then claims their source, whom they (Kaul and himself) had verified as genuine, sent them screenshots and screen recordings of the ‘Tek Fog’ app on various days. This would include details of ‘tasks’ they had to do and which topics they had to trend to ‘investigate’. They, then, ‘verified’ activities and checked if the accounts trending these topics were real or bots. To put things in perspective, everyone knows bots are a concern on Twitter, which is why the new ‘Chief Twit’ of Twitter, Elon Musk, wanted to back out of the deal over allegations that the platform is filled with bots. Amusing that the ‘tech experts’ of The Wire found bots as the most damning part in this ‘Tek Fog’ investigation.

Devesh then categorises those accounts that tweet ’72 tweets’ in a day as ‘suspicious’ and ‘144 tweets’ in a day as ‘highly suspicious’. He claims that the tweets which come every 10 minutes are suspicious. Let me introduce the duo to Tweetdeck, which allows users to schedule tweets. You can schedule tweets for days on Tweetdeck and which is a part of Twitter itself. This kind of perfectly spaced tweets should hardly raise anyone’s concern. Except, if you are ‘tech experts’ hired by The Wire.

Amusingly, what Devesh and Kaul are now attributing to ‘Tek Fog’, was something Devesh had singlehandedly claimed to have done in December 2019 while running ‘parallel IT cell’ from his home. (Please refer to the screenshot above from his Reddit post.)

Coming back to their ‘AMA’, Kaul then adds, 20 different machine-learning data sets were used for ‘hate speech’ tracking. But all this was not included in The Wire report because ‘an average’ reader would not be interested or ‘understand’. They claimed to release more such technical details later, but 10 months later, no such documentation has been released. On the contrary, these ‘Tek Fog’ stories now stand withdrawn.

Down with fascism!

Predicting that people will dismiss this ‘hashtag trending and hijacking’ nonsense as lame, Devesh asked Varadarajan his thoughts on ‘Tek Fog’ investigation. Varadarajan then said that [the investigation is important as] someone who’s technologically proficient or has ‘deep pockets’, is able to use technology to amplify that they represent hundreds or thousands of people. Varadarajan then claims that ‘autocrats’ deeply resent and oppose when individuals come together and present a ‘collective threat’ to authority. Hence, one of the first things they do is put a ban on ‘mass gatherings’, and will attack ‘free speech’.

He then claims that ‘autocratic governments’ use technology to ‘set narrative’ and ‘drown authentic criticism’. He claims that it shows ‘utter depravity and desperation of those who have created this app who are trying any and every means to silence their critics’. Varadarajan then claims those who have created Tek Fog wanted to silence and drain out dissenters. “This is why Tek Fog is a dangerous technology,” Varadarajan claimed and added it was an assault on ‘democracy’. Again, like his ‘tech experts’, Varadarajan has not really seen Tek Fog app – they have all relied on screenshots provided by the ‘source’ who claimed to be a ‘BJP insider’.

Varadarajan said that The Wire decided to ‘highlight this [Tek Fog] editorially’ and to put it in the public domain as it was a threat to democracy. At this point, Varadarajan does mention they don’t know how this technology works and who all are behind it but asked for those who are involved with this to come forward and explain. Kaul, at this point, ‘reiterates’ that any political party which indulges in this kind of ‘technology’ is wrong and is a ‘threat’ to everyone. He then claims that if during their ‘investigation’, they would have found if it were any other party other than BJP ‘behind this technology’, they would have still gone ahead with it because ‘that is what the reality would have been’. Kaul then puts up a disclaimer that one shouldn’t get into ‘that kind of debate’.

Kaul then talks about how ’20 months ago’ there was nothing on ‘Tek Fog’ on Google except one tweet. “Now, after 20 months, we have a Wikipedia page, we have the ability to have a public debate about it,” he said that all they wanted to do was ‘discuss’ this app. He adds that these reports by The Wire were not closed chapter but was the ‘first chapter’ of this ‘entire discussion’.

WhatsApp hacking that never was

Devesh then talks about ‘phishing’ of inactive WhatsApp accounts which could have ‘possibly happened’. Devesh had claimed WhatsApp could have verified their claims by checking logs. Meta is the parent company of WhatsApp as well along with Facebook and Instagram. Devesh claims their source had not mentioned this ‘WhatsApp hacking’ as a feature in initial screenshots but had revealed it later that the app could ‘hijack WhatsApp’ (more on this later).

Devesh then claims that their ‘source’ alleged that on behalf of someone else they could send WhatsApp messages to others. Devesh then claims he uninstalled WhatsApp on his phone and Kaul kept WhatsApp on his. They then asked their source to send a message to Kaul from Devesh’s number after WhatsApp was uninstalled. Devesh claims their ‘source’ could not send a message to Kaul’s phone because likely the phone was ‘active’ or ‘not yet hacked’ but Devesh’s phone number appeared since ‘they’ (BJP IT cell) had ‘hijacked’ his WhatsApp earlier. Devesh reiterates that the BJP IT Cell through ‘Tek Fog’ had ‘hijacked’ his WhatsApp account, not his phone entirely.

“We shared my phone number, but they didn’t need it because they already had my account details in their Tek Fog app. So we made them send messages to my frequently contacted five people, one of whom was Ayushman, and while they are doing it, they screen-recorded the process and sent us. The whole process happened in five minutes,” Devesh claimed. Devesh then added that his WhatsApp account as well as his phone had 4 digit security pin along with OTP authentication, thereby suggesting a very sophisticated way of hacking. Devesh throws in tech words like hardware hacking, and spyware but claims The Wire could not verify the exact methodology through which the app was ‘hijacked’. Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company has not even bothered to comment on this.

Anyone with basic knowledge of computers will know that unless the target phone is already infected with some malware or trojan, this is not possible. Real-world hacking does not work as shown in movies, and for an end-to-end encrypted app like WhatsApp, it is even more difficult. If the inactive WhatsApp account of the Wire author was actually hacked, it means the device was already hacked using some malicious link the ‘source’ had sent them. But Devesh has specified his phone was not hacked, only WhatsApp was.

Pegasus vs Tek Fog

Kaul again comes back to say that all technology-related things aside, this ‘Tek Fog’ is a ‘human story’ as people being affected are not third-party individuals removed from us, but ‘we are the target’ he added. He then says, “We must ask ourselves what could be impact this could have on the society where you have the ability to manipulate and create what is reality and what is the political reality for many people in the country. Kaul then asks to activate other organisations like NGOs, ‘members of civil society’ to ‘fight’ this.” And we all know how some left-leaning members of ‘civil society’ are always waiting to write letters to the Prime Minister, President, Chief Justice of India, and even the United Nations.

When Varadarajan, who had also claimed his phone was hacked by ‘spy app’ Pegasus by the central government led by PM Modi, was asked to comment on that, he claimed that Pegasus and Tek Fog are not related ‘except for the same set of bad cast’ as the same set of people had deployed both apps. He asserted that Pegasus and ‘Tek Fog’ (which does not exist) were both run by BJP. Varadarajan claims Pegasus represents an attempt at passive surveillance by the government to ‘gather information and intelligence’. Tek Fog, on the other hand, ‘represents a more active gaming’ and added that they have no doubt that the footprints of those who deployed this app lead to ‘the ruling party’, that is the BJP, and the ‘wider Hindutva parivar’ but the motivation is to actively disrupt conversations, actively intimidate and harass critics rather than simply listening and to gather information, the aim is to silence, shut up through abuse, that is one part of it.

“The other part is to magnify or amplify your message on such a scale that it appears like the whole country is with you when it is just a handful of people sitting in the office in Nagpur (RSS headquarters) who are churning this all out. But if one person can put out 900 tweets in 15-20 minutes, then this tells you the kind of ability of handlers or operators of Tek Fog has to amplify the official voice,” Varadarajan speaks about the features of Tek Fog. Again, to remind readers, no one at The Wire had actually seen ‘Tek Fog’.

If you consider the messaging that is amplified, that is polarising content, hate content, whether it is targeting Muslims or Christians or targeting women or generally pushing the government’s agenda, then you can see how Tek Fog represents active disruption or an active assault on the integrity of public sphere, added The Wire’s Founding Editor. Structurally it is different from Pegasus except for one feature which is WhatsApp hijacking, which is ‘hacking’ a phone. However, both represent an assault on the integrity of democracy, Varadarajan added.

On a side note, ‘assault on democracy’ is also one of the favourite words of ‘members of civil society’.

Answering a question on blowback for ‘Tek Fog’ investigation, Kaul said that they don’t feel great about it but this is the price one has to pay in this day and age in our country. “Those who do this kind of work are willing to face these kinds of circumstances, and if you are not willing to face these kinds of circumstances and are more worried about losing your position than you are about bringing something forward and doing your job as a journalist, then leave this space,” Kaul claimed. It appears in their heads and imagination, the likes of Kaul are fighting a ‘war’ against ‘fascism’ which is why they spout these things straight out of the playbook.

Give us attention, please

Answering a question on how The Wire plans to get more attention on Tek Fog, Kaul said they focussed their attention on getting this series out. “We have a strategy how we will engage with various partners to push the investigation forward,” Kaul claimed adding they did not team up with any other media house before concluding the investigation.

Varadarajan added with a lot of pride how some international media is already picking up on their story. French media has picked up our reportage. Very good stories on Le Monde (Left-leaning French Paper that regularly publishes anti-India content and also is relied on by leftists within India to ‘fix Modi’) and Libération (another leftist publication in France) are there. “Washington Post, Buzzfeed, and a number of media outlets at are global levels are closely following this. And also we need to look at the tech media community globally. They have all read our investigation and commenting favourably on it and finding ways to take it forward,” Varadarajan added.

He claims he has heard people who are ‘victims’ of Tek Fog of the possibility of legal action. He adds political parties will be raising these issues, all of this is good, it is positive, and shows what we uncovered is of deep concern to citizens at large. Siddharth then expresses disappointment that the rest of the Indian media did not follow up on their big revelation, unlike the foreign media that has lapped up on the story.

To add to this, based on this Tek Fog story, Freedom House, a dubious Human Rights ‘watchdog’ that supported violent protests against a law that gave citizenship rights to persecuted minorities like Hindus, Parsis, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Christians from Islamic states neighbouring India, dropped the country from ‘free’ to ‘partly free’ in 2021 based on this ‘Tek Fog’ story. In 2022, too, the organisation maintained India as ‘partly free’, leaning on prejudiced reports and unfounded allegations, including The Wire’s story on Tek Fog (now taken down by The Wire), to claim that members of the BJP used it to shape public narratives and manipulate social media opinions.

Likewise, other organisations that have been pathologically averse to India, especially after Modi became the prime minister, cited the Tek Fog story as one of the examples to lower India’s ranking on their farcical indexes.

When asked about BJP’s reaction to Tek Fog, Varadarajan said BJP has pretended it does not exist. “They have refrained from making comment, Devang Dave who was named in the report issued a denial but other than that, BJP chose not to engage. It does not surprise me. Opposition MPs have begun to raise various aspects of our report, particularly the part where women journalists are targeted using Tek Fog. I suspect this issue will not go away. Sooner or later the BJP will have to even if to issue a denial, they will have to acknowledge that Tek Fog story is out there,” he had said. As things stand now, Tek Fog stories stand withdrawn pending an internal investigation by The Wire.

Ayushman added that they are working with a bunch of legal advocacy organisations and will find the best way to pursue this, through the best organisation that is available to them through the judiciary, through parliament. “We have a long way to go,” he added.

When questioned why all the screenshots of the app on their story were on iOS (Apple device), Ayushman chose to not answer and let Devesh take it up. Devesh claimed that ‘Tek Fog’ operator was running this app through iOS. Since their ‘source’ only sent them screenshots of app, without letting them access it, they could hardly do anything about it. Devesh claimed they don’t think Apple or Google have anything to do with it as the app is not a ‘native app’ but a browser-based app.

One would suspect if such a source even exists or if it was one of their sock puppet accounts created to talk about this superhuman app because anyone questioning it will be termed ‘fascist enablers’ and any action taken by those they have named in the article, will then be termed as ‘attack on dissenting voice’. As we have seen in the recent Meta absurdity, the action by Delhi Police over forged documents with an aim to defame one person is being portrayed as an abuse of state machinery for a ‘mistake’ which they have ‘apologised’ for. For the record, The Wire has not apologised to Malviya, who has filed a complaint against The Wire. The Wire has also not apologised to Meta or its representatives or even their ‘experts’ whom they had named, like Ujjwal Kumar of Microsoft Asia, for forging their emails. The shamelessness is astounding.

Claims so absurd, even Big Tech ignored

Answering a question on whether The Wire has reached out to tech companies like Twitter and Facebook for their comments on the damning allegations that their platforms are abused by an invisible app like ‘Tek Fog’, Kaul claims some ‘tech partners’ were made aware of the data and analysis they had done including the WhatsApp hack and added that these companies are investigating them. Kaul claimed to have communicated to representatives of these companies (which would mean Meta, as the parent company of WhatsApp), and it appeared that they (these tech companies, meaning Twitter and Meta), were taking them (allegations) very seriously. He claimed that they have not yet commented publicly but will comment eventually. He claimed that it would not be right for him to say what the public statement of these tech companies would be and added that he does not know it either but ‘I do feel’ with the conversation I had with them that they are investigating it.

He claimed the tech behind this app is extremely sophisticated and not easy as they would have liked but are taking it seriously to take it forward. He then added that these companies are aware of Tek Fog. Meta has not yet released any statement with regard to Tek Fog and neither has Twitter. At this point, one is not even sure if Kaul had any conversations with these companies. And again, to reiterate, Tek Fog stories are also retracted from public viewing by The Wire.

Devesh claimed that on June 18, 2021, he and Kaul in their individual capacities provided a list of 5,000 accounts to the Twitter Global Public Policy team. These accounts they claimed were associated with ‘Tek Fog’, and soon he claimed these accounts were deactivated. Devesh claimed Twitter did not get back to them about these ‘accounts’. Even till now, Twitter has not issued any statement on Tek Fog.

Good information vs bad information

Answering a question on ‘biased’ news channels, Varadarajan suggested that people should stop watching biased news channels. “This does not mean other people won’t be watching them, but one should not make their propaganda any easier,” he adds. Varadarajan then says that people should engage with friends and family members who spread ‘disinformation’ that emanate from these channels and engage with them on why this is ‘nonsense’. He then adds that people could then support media that is doing ‘good work like us’. Varadarajan then suggests people should ‘support good media’ and ‘keep away from bad media’ and asked people to let friends and family know when ‘bad media does bad story’.

Few things here. Who decides what is disinformation? Either side of the media lives in an echo chamber as we have seen even in the Meta saga where despite The Wire admitting to using fraudulent documents for a sensational story, the ecosystem is rallying behind them and portraying the police action against them as some sort of abuse of power against ‘dissenting voice’ for a ‘bad story’, if I were to use Siddharth Varadarajan’s words. And then, Varadarajan is asking people to not watch some news channels. Anything that they do not publish is ‘disinformation’ apparently and crusaders of free speech suddenly don’t want those voices amplified. To cite PM Modi, hypocrisy ki bhi seema hoti hai.

Meanwhile, Kaul added that ‘everyone has a role to play’. He added that when they got this ‘information’, it was ‘their role’ to ‘verify’ and ‘find out what they could’ and ‘communicate it further’. He, too, asks people to ‘counter bad information’ with ‘good information’. All their verification was limited to seeing screenshots. These guys did not even actually access this super secret app they are talking so confidently about.

News or information could be right or wrong, how can they be ‘good’ or ‘bad’? Who gives out these certificates to the information? Who are these gatekeepers of ‘information’ who segregate good and bad stuff? Clearly, the ones mouthing these platitudes are now accused of forging documents and evidence. And are playing the victim. This is astonishing.

Kaul then urges those who are outraged with this ‘Tek Fog’ to write to editors of newspapers and channels asking them why are they not covering it. Kaul, giving lessons on morality, said newspapers should be publishing these stories on Tek Fog as it interests their readers.

The denials which were ignored

The duo now talks about an alleged corporate nexus. Two companies that were part of this ‘Tek Fog’ are named by them. Devesh claims that the ‘source’ was hired as social media manager by Persistent Systems. Devesh asserts how it has offices in Nagpur (which is also home to RSS headquarters) and elsewhere (headquartered in Pune and 59 locations across the world in total). He claimed the source was assigned client ‘Mohalla Tech Private Limited’ which is the parent company of the app ShareChat.

Devesh claims they confirmed with someone working with Persistent Systems to know if they had Mohalla Tech (ShareChat) as one of the clients. He claims their source in Persistent sent them screenshots of files related to ‘Tek Fog’. Since ‘Tek Fog’ was not talked about before that anonymous Twitter account claiming to be a disgruntled BJP IT Cell member, finding ‘files’ related to the same in Persistent Systems was proof enough, as per them. He claimed many of the activities in the screenshot shared by someone from Persistent Systems matched what their other source had given them. Now, why does all this sound so familiar?

Devesh then asserts that two independent sources who never talked to each other and did not know each other ‘confirmed in isolation’ what was happening in Persistent Systems. Devesh again claims these proofs came to them via their official email ids. To put things in perspective, Devesh had also claimed their sources within Meta had shared an email from Meta communications personnel, Andy Stone, which has turned out to be fabricated. Devesh had also shared emails of two ‘independent experts’ who had verified communication they had with Meta insider, both of whom have said they never sent those emails. To further prove the authenticity of an email, Devesh had ‘verified’ the mail’s DKIM and in the video, the voiceover was provided by Ayushman Kaul. Persistent Systems, back in January 2022 when the report had come out, had categorically said that their internal investigation revealed no involvement in ‘Tek Fog’.

Devesh then claims they contacted another BJYM (Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, youth wing of BJP) source via their ‘first source’ (anonymous account on Twitter) who gave a ‘python script’ which located Tek Fog server and also showed services associated with ‘Tek Fog’ server. Kaul then explains how they were in contact with an ‘active’ BJYM officeholder and hence was being careful about revealing information. He claims the official sent profiler code, also via official email id, to ‘prove’ it was indeed coming from the BJYM official. As we have seen in the Meta saga, The Wire has a penchant for sharing screenshots that contain ’emails’ from ‘official mail ids’ as evidence which turn up to be fraudulent.

Kaul then claims with the ShareChat database, a lot of ‘local media’ were also connected to their internal LAN (local area network), which is ‘extremely influential’ in terms of readership. Devesh claims that ABP News, Dainik Jagran, amongst other media houses (their report also mentioned OpIndia, but they skipped us in their video) were connected to Tek Fog servers, they had no other ‘proof’. To reiterate, Tek Fog does not exist, and neither do any of the things these two have claimed till now.

Devesh then claims they ‘investigated’ ShareChat and found it had a huge ‘hate speech’ and ‘spam’ problem. Devesh claimed that their source would first post abusive things on ShareChat and then go on Twitter to post the same. This is amusing since none of the people they claimed to be abused via Tek Fog were active on ShareChat. Who were they abusing there? ShareChat, too, had denied knowledge of the app or involvement in the same.

The essence of Tek Fog

Devesh’s monologue towards the end of the video, starting from around 1 hour 10 minutes onward appears like they had a list of hashtags and accounts in front of them, and to ‘prove’ communal hashtags were trended on behest of the BJP, they went and saw those handles had tweeted those things. Now, here is the thing. The account ‘Aarthi Sharma’, which has been the ‘source’ for The Wire story came up in April 2020. It was active only till July 2020. This account also tweets about ‘Tek Fog’ for the very first time. The Tablighi Jamaat attendees, many of whom were found in violation of visa norms, were staying at the Nizmauddin Markaz in New Delhi. They were found on 30-31 March 2020. If the ‘source’ had built up the dossier on hashtags trended around those times, it would not be too difficult to go and ‘verify’ that those topics were trended.

Example: In December 2022 I ‘leak’ a screenshot of a document that lists out Congress’ trending topics for the month of November. I sneakily would add the date for say, October 15, 2022 when the document was created. Now, to ‘verify’, if you track those hashtags, you will likely find most of them as trending. Because I actually created this document in December after keeping track of hashtags in November to fool you and take you for a ride to exploit your confirmation bias. Creating a backdated document based on events that have already happened and then leak the same as some sort of brave whistleblower. And you, despite knowing how things work, would likely play along because in your head, you are fighting a war against ‘disinformation’ and the ‘good information’ must be put out.

It is VERY likely this is exactly what has happened. I may be a mentally disturbed individual, but instead of seeking therapy, I seek employment in your organisation and you happily hire me because you are consumed by your bias.

And that, is how, The Wire shortcircuited.

China inches closer to launching its own space station as the final module completes docking with Tiangong

On Monday, China launched the third and final module of its space station. It will be the second permanently operating outpost in low-Earth orbit, following NASA’s International Space Station.

The unmanned Mengtian, or “Dreaming of the Heavens,” module was launched at 3:37 PM (0737 GMT) from the Wenchang Space Launch Center in the southern island province of Hainan by China’s most powerful rocket, the Long March 5B. Deng Hongqin, director of the launch command centre, stated that the module was in orbit after 14 minutes.

The 23-ton, 59-foot-long Mengtian module connected with the Tiangong space station 13 hours after launch. The module includes a variety of scientific equipment, including exceptionally precise atomic clocks and equipment designed to replicate the coldest conditions yet reached by humans.

China has successfully launched the core module, three manned spacecraft, the Wentian lab module, and six cargo spacecraft to develop Tiangong during the last two years. According to the space agency, the three-member crew of the Shenzhou-14 mission, who are now living in the space station, will be joined by three additional astronauts to finish the construction of Tiangong by the end of this year.

China barred from the International Space Station since 2011

Since 2011, when Washington prohibited NASA from interacting with Beijing, China has been barred from the International Space Station (ISS). The completion of the Chinese space station is the latest step in Beijing’s larger goal to challenge, and eventually surpass, the United States in space exploration, as well as to develop a wide base of information for China’s enormous and rapidly rising scientific establishment.

Tianhe, the station’s main module, was launched into orbit last year. China followed in July by launching the first of two scientific modules, the Wentian, which docked with the core. With the Mengtian module docked, the full space station resembles a “T” configuration. Tiangong, which translates as “heavenly palace,” will be operational for around a decade and will host a range of near-zero gravity experiments.

International interest in experiments to be conducted on the Chinese station will rise if the ISS retires in the upcoming years. The ISS has held more than 3,000 scientific experiments since November 2000. China has granted approval to at least nine proposals from researchers in countries ranging from India to Switzerland for the first round of testing carried out in partnership with the United Nations Space Agency.
