As Delhi HC’s 6-week notice to Subramanian Swamy to vacate govt bungalow ends, he approaches court claiming centre has not made security arrangements

On Thursday, former BJP Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy approached the Delhi High Court claiming that the Centre failed to ensure adequate security arrangements at his private residence in the national capital. The move came as the six-week window provided to him by the Delhi High Court to hand over possession of the government accommodation he had been living in the Lutyens’ Bungalow Zone in Delhi to the estate officer ended today.

Swamy’s lawyer Jayant Mehta submitted before the division bench headed by Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma that his client had agreed to leave the government accommodation by October 26 after an undertaking was given by the Centre before the court that it will ensure that all adequate security arrangements are done at his private accommodation. However, Mehta claimed that no such arrangement was done by the central government.

The matter was mentioned by Senior Advocate Jayant Mehta before a bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad, and the court agreed to list the case for hearing on October 31, Monday.

On 14 September, Swamy was ordered by the Delhi High Court to vacate the government bungalow within 6 weeks, and accordingly, that window of six weeks ended today. And on the last of the grace period, he approached the High Court seeking to retain the bungalow for more time.

Calling Subramanian Swamy a ‘Shameless blackmailer’, Delhi BJP leader Sourabh Choudhary tweeted that he has come up with “senile, baseless and desperate tweets” today because today is the last day of the six-week notice given by the High Court to hand over the bungalow to the govt.

Delhi HC directs Subramanian Swamy to vacate Govt accommodation within 6 weeks

At this point, the petition looks to be Subramanian Swamy’s last-ditch effort to escape having to vacate the government house allotted to him in 2016. Notably, in January 2016, the urban development ministry of the union government allotted a bungalow on Pandara Road in the Lutyens’ Bungalow Zone in Delhi to Subramanian Swamy on security grounds. Swamy was a private citizen at that time, but he was allotted the VVIP house based on threat perception.

Subramanian Swamy was nominated as a Rajya Sabha member in April 2016, and he continued to live in bungalow number AB-14 as an MP. His Rajya Sabha term ended in April this year, but he wanted to retain the house and approached the Delhi High Court seeking re-allotment of the bungalow. In his plea, he had said that it was originally allotted to him on security grounds, and he still faces threats due to his political activities.

The disgruntled BJP leader claimed that the type 7 bungalow should be re-allotted to him as he is a Z-category protectee and there are security guards that stay with him.

But the central govt opposed the plea, saying that the house is required to allot other ministers and MPs. Central Government’s Standing Counsel Asheesh Jain said that while Swamy’s Z-category security has not been downgraded, the question is on the bungalow, which was allotted for five years, and that term has expired.

After hearing the arguments, the High Court rejected the plea filed by Swamy on September 14 this year and ordered him to vacate the bungalow within 6 weeks. The court noted that the appellant has a residence in Nizamuddin East, and directed the govt to arrange for his security and safety there.

Pope Francis admits nuns and priests watch porn, says “The devil gets in from there”

In a transcript released by the Vatican on Wednesday, Pope Francis warned seminarians in Rome about the risks of online pornography, calling soft porn a temptation that “weakens the priestly heart.”

Pope Francis’ meeting at the Vatican on Monday saw the 86-year-old pontiff address in detail a broad range of questions from priests and seminarians studying in Rome, ranging from reconciling science and faith to attempting to live virtuously in the face of personal flaws.

However, when asked how digital and social media should be utilized to “spread the joy of being Christians,” the Pontiff warned against excessively watching the news and listening to music that distracts from one’s work.

“And there’s another issue on this (topic) that you’re probably aware of, digital pornography”, he stated according to the transcript issued of the question and answer session, he stated.

“Each of you consider if you have had experience with or been tempted by internet pornography. It’s a vice that many individuals have, including laymen, laywomen, and even priests and nuns,” Pope Francis said.

“And I’m not just talking about criminal pornography, where you see live examples of abuse: that’s already degeneracy. However, in terms of regular pornography”, he went on to say.

The Pope has already condemned pornography previously, most recently in June, when he termed it a “persistent attack on the dignity of men and women,” adding that it should be designated a threat to public health.

“Dear brothers, watch out for this. This pornographic information cannot be received by a pure heart, one that accepts Jesus every day. Delete it from your cell phones so you don’t have temptation in your hand”, the Pope advised.

“The devil enters from there, weakening the priestly heart. Excuse me for delving into the details about pornography, but there is a reality: a reality that affects priests, seminarians, nuns, and consecrated souls,” he remarked.

Pope Francis further asserted the importance of avoiding porn and mentioned that it is a very crucial issue.

The Vatican was left red-faced in late 2020 after it was revealed that Pope Francis’ official Instagram account liked a photo of a Brazilian model, Natalia Garibotto, prompting it to seek explanations from the social media app. Before being unliked, the “like” was displayed on Garibotto’s page for several days.

In a historic decision, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah announces equal pay for male and female cricketers

0

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the implementation of a pay equity policy for contracted Indian women cricketers. The match fee for both Men and Women Cricketers will now be the same from the BCCI.

Sharing the news, BCCI honorary secretary Jay Shah tweeted, “I’m pleased to announce @BCCI’s first step towards tackling discrimination. We are implementing pay equity policy for our contracted @BCCIWomen cricketers.”

As per the new policy, the women cricketers contracted by BCCI will be paid 15 lakhs rupees per Test match, 6 lakhs rupees per One Day International, and 3 lakhs per T20 International, in line with the payments made to the men’s cricket team for the international games. Mr. Shah added that it was his commitment to provide this pay equity to female cricketers and he has managed to achieve it.

The interest in women’s cricket has been growing in India during the past few years, especially after India reached the final of the 2017 World Cup on the back of a historic 171* by current skipper Harmanpreet Kaur. Since then, India has also reached the final of the T20 World Cup in 2020, made it to the final of the Commonwealth Games in 2022, and won the recently concluded Asia Cup.

Adding this pay equity is not the only step that BCCI has taken to promote women’s cricket in India. Starting in 2023, there will be an IPL for women’s cricket as well, in line with the existing Indian Premier League for men’s cricket. The women’s Indian Premier League will have its inaugural edition in March 2023, ahead of the men’s IPL, and will consist of 5 teams.

The event is expected to give a boost to the women’s game in the country, similar to the one the men’s game received in terms of money and popularity after the event was launched in 2008.

From 97% made-in-India mobile phones to the new Data Protection Bill, here is what all MoS Rajeev Chandrasekhar said at the CyFY2022 event

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, stated on Wednesday that over 97% of mobile phones used in India are made in India. The minister said this while speaking at the CyFY2022 event, which was organized by the Observer Research Foundation (ORF).

“In 2014, over 92% of mobile phones used in India were imported; today, over 97% of mobile phones used in India are made in India. We currently export electronic devices worth $12 billion,” Rajeev Chandrasekhar stated.

The IT Minister also talked about the new Data Protection Bill and assured that it will be “modern and simple legislation.” He asserted that the right to privacy and data protection are fundamental rights of Indian citizens and the Data Protection Bill will recognize and uphold these rights. “Data protection bill is going to be simple legislation. It will be built around basic principles of the right to privacy & data protection which are fundamental rights in India  & therefore these principles will be ensured,” he remarked.

The new personal data protection bill is expected to be tabled in Parliament during the budget session in February of next year. The Centre withdrew the Personal Data Protection Bill, 2021 in August, stating that it would be replaced by “a comprehensive legal framework.”

According to Rajeev Chandrasekhar, who is also the Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, India has emerged not only as a local center for talent and innovation in the semiconductor and microelectronics industries but also as a global center of the innovation economy. According to the minister, India has achieved significant progress in the semiconductor industry since 2014. In 2014, the majority of electrical devices were imported, but today, 97 percent of products are manufactured in India, according to him. “India has a blueprint in place to advance the semiconductor industry.”

According to Chandrasekhar, practically every ecosystem today, including the drone ecosystem, has many more start-ups, and they are an integral part of the government’s objective of building a new India.

“Global supply networks must be shaped not only by efficiency and cost-effectiveness but also by values and trust. Democratic nations must take the lead in crafting the internet’s future,” he added.

“India will work with other democracies n open societies like the US, Australia, Japan, Israel, S.Korea, etc to shape the future of #Tech, #Internet and Electronics The post-Covid world seeks supply chains led by trusted nations,” the MoS tweeted.

Furthermore, Chandrasekhar said that India has a significant number of startups focused on the next generation of device and technology design and that the country has made a historic decision to keep the internet open, but certain conditions must be followed.

“Safety, security, and trust are essential. There must be a coalition of agreement on these boundary conditions. “India is eager to lead the charge towards Web 3.0, but issues surrounding online gaming and cryptocurrency must be handled carefully. It is necessary to create a safe and trusting environment while not stifling innovation,” he asserted.

According to the minister, technological participation is reshaping the economy, expectations, and the youth. He claimed that no country in history had ever innovated on this scale and scope.

Bollywood filmmaker rams wife with his car after being caught with another woman by her, video viral

Mumbai police have registered a case under sections 279 and 338 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against film producer Kamal Kishor Mishra for allegedly ramming his car into his wife after she spotted him with another woman in his car. After being caught by his wife, Kamal Kishor tried to escape from the spot, running over his wife, who later registered the complaint.

As per the case registered at Amboli Police Station, Kamal Kishor’s wife was out looking for him when she spotted him in a car with another woman. When she moved forward to confront him, Kamal Kishor tried to escape from there to avoid the confrontation, ramming his wife in the process.

CCTV footage of the incident in the parking area of the residential building at Andheri West has shown how Kamal Mishra rammed his car against his wife. The latter falls to the ground while he drives away to escape the situation.

The incident allegedly took place on October 19, in which Kamal Kishor’s wife suffered injuries to her head and hands. Kamal Mishra is the producer of the Hindi film ‘Dehati Disco’ which stars the famous Bollywood choreographer Ganesh Acharya.

Further investigations into the case are underway.

Days after Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal promised a clean Yamuna for Chhath puja, toxic foam appears on the river

On October 27, ahead of Chhath Puja snan (holy dip), white toxic froth was seen floating on the Yamuna river in Delhi. As per news agency ANI, the foam was visible from Kalindi Kunj, Delhi.

The poisonous foam was seen drifting towards the Yamuna ghats, despite the fact that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal assured clean ghats and water for devotees during this year’s Chhatth puja. Chhath will be celebrated on October 30 and 31.

It may be recalled that only a week earlier, Kejriwal had taken to Twitter to assure that orders have been given to all the officers and that all arrangements will be made to ensure that Yamuna is not polluted as devotees prepare to celebrate the annual Hindu festival.

Arvind Kejriwal has spent years harping on the ‘three-year Yamuna clean’ promise but has failed to deliver each time. Because of this track record of making pledges and shifting deadlines, no one appears to have taken him seriously this time.

The social media platforms are once again flooded with videos and images of the ‘toxic Yamuna,’ leaving Netizens amused about how this thick envelope of toxic carcinogenic foam has become an annual tradition under his administration.

Another social media user mocked the AAP government by recalling how, last year, a Delhi Jal Board employee was found sprinkling water on the river Yamuna in a bid to dissipate the toxic foam.

Arvind Gupta, former BJP IT cell chief and head of Digital India Foundation and IIT-BHU professor, used the circumstance to make a sarcastic quip about Kejriwal, who has continued to blame the crisis on Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. “CM @ArvindKejriwal has fulfilled his commitment to make Yamuna clean. But Haryana keeps sending this toxicfoam and ANI captures the same with perfect timing,” Tweeted Arvind Gupta.

Arvind Kejriwal keep extending the deadline to clear the Yamuna river

Interestingly, the series of issuing dates after dates for cleaning the Yamuna by the Delhi government has been going on since the beginning of his political career. Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, in 2015, promised to clean the Yamuna river within 5 years (by 2020). He had, in fact, made this promise standing on the banks of the river along with his cabinet colleagues and senior Delhi government officials, who had taken part in the first ‘Yamuna Aarti’ held at the Kudesia Ghat.

In November 2019, he said his government has planned to clean the Yamuna in the next four to five years, and people would be able to take a dip in it. In December same year, he promised the people attending his rally that by the next elections (scheduled in 2025), he would take the whole village for a dip in the Yamuna.

In January 2020, he again promised to get it cleaned in five years. He had promised to take a dip in the Yamuna himself.

However, almost eight years after AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal first promised to clean the Yamuna, the river continues to be engulfed in toxic foam to date.

In November 2021, a bizarre visual made it to social media after the Delhi government tried to control toxic foam in the river with a hedge made out of bamboo sticks. Delhi Jal Board employees were seen sprinkling water on toxic foam to “clean the river”.

Coimbatore blast: Mohammed Thalka, one of 5 arrested is the nephew of Al-Ummah’s chief, the mastermind of 1998 serial blasts in the city

On October 22, a 25-year-old man died in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, after an LPG cylinder in a car burst in the communally sensitive Kottaimedu district. The deceased in the Coimbatore blast was identified as Jamesha Mubin, a resident of Kottaipudur, near GM Nagar in Ukkadam.

There was an explosion at about 4 am in a Maruti car just opposite the Kottai Eswaran temple in the Ukkadam area of Coimbatore. Two gas cylinders, marbles, and nails were found.

The vehicle, a Maruti 800 hatchback, was shattered into pieces as a result of the bomb blast. Police also collected an unexploded LPG cylinder, steel balls, glass pebbles, and aluminum and iron nails from the scene. While alleged connections were reported between the recent cylinder blast and the 2019 Easter attacks in Sri Lanka, reports have emerged stating that the Tamil Nadu Police also found a link to the 1998 serial blasts in Coimbatore during the investigation.

According to a report published by India Today, Ukkadam, the area in which Mubin was residing has been a sensitive area, especially after the 1998 serial blasts that happened in the city. After the recent cylinder attack, while one police team conducted searches at Mubin’s residence, another team was engaged in raiding the premises of Islamic terrorists associated with Al-Ummah, the terrorist organization responsible for the Coimbatore serial blasts in 1998. The Police also raided the house of Al-Ummah chief Syed Ahmed Basha’s brother, Nawab Khan.

Nawab Khan is currently imprisoned for his involvement in the terror organization that plotted the 1998 serial explosions. These explosions killed over 60 individuals and injured approximately 220 others. Reports mention that the police officers also interrogated Nawab Khan’s son, Mohammed Thalka or Dalqa, who is now recognized to be one of the 5 offenders charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Section 120B (penalty for criminal conspiracy) and 153A (promoting enmity between different communities) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) have also been added to the case, in which the deceased Jamesha Mubin has also been identified as an offender, under the UAPA.

The Police also investigated Mubin’s phone and checked his data to discover that before his death, the deceased had posted a WhatsApp story to apologize for his acts. “If the news of my death reaches you, forgive my mistakes. Hide my shortcomings. Participate in my Janasa. Pray for me”, the message written in local language read. A report mentions that the message posted by Mubin was custom-made and designed probably having connection with the ‘KhilafahGFX’ Facebook page.

The Facebook page named ‘KhilafahGFX’ was active by around 2019 and was known to be propagating the ideology of ISIS. The page was maintained by Mohammed Azharuddin who was arrested by the NIA amid investigations surrounding the Kasargod – ISIS breakthrough in Kerala. He was also connected on Facebook with Lankan suicide bomber Zahran Hashim, who was the mastermind of the Easter bombings that happened in Sri Lanka in the year 2019.

Authorities also discovered handwritten paper documents retrieved from Jamesha Mubin’s home detailing popular sites that they planned to recce or had done previously. The Racecourse, Victoria Hall, railway terminals, and other public venues are some of them. Notably, the reports stated that one of the five detained in the case is believed to have paid a visit to Mohammed Azharuddin (of the KhilafahGFX) in Cochin jail with the now-deceased Mubin.

Mohammed Azharuddin who maintained the Facebook page named KhilafahGFX was arrested in 2019

Earlier, the NIA had also questioned Mubin in the 2019 Easter bombings case. According to police officers, Mubin had made preparations for a blast earlier also, but the plan had been foiled. After the recent blasts, Tamil Nadu police arrested 5 persons identified as Nawab’s son Muhammed Dhalha and four others; Nawab Ismail, Firoz Ismail, Muhammed Riyaz and Muhammed Azaruddin.

According to another report, Mubin was also Facebook friend with Sri Lankan Islamic cleric Zahran Hashim, the mastermind of the 2019 Easter bombing in Sri Lanka. The Police also said that Mubin was a close friend of Muhammed Azaruddin, who is now in a jail in Kerala over the IS case. The five accused in the current case were identified by the police from the CCTV visuals. The Police said that the accused individuals had placed an object like a gas cylinder in the automobile that exploded on Saturday night last week.

The Coimbatore serial blasts 1998-

A series of devastating bomb blasts rocked Coimbatore on 14 February 1998 which killed around 60 people and nearly killed LK Advani, the then BJP president whose scheduled arrival was delayed as his flight was delayed by over 90 minutes. The bombs were concealed in cars, motorcycles, bicycles, side boxes of two-wheeler, denim and rexine bags, and fruit carts. Reports mention that the bombings were apparently in retaliation to the 1997 Coimbatore riots that happened during November and December in the year 1997.

The terror plot was named ‘Operation Allahu Akbar’ and intended to kill Advani who was supposed to address an election meeting in the city that day. Seven human bombers with immediate package explosives fastened to their waists were ready to attack Advani. However, their preparations failed since they were unable to penetrate the police barrier and approach him. But the other explosives put across the city, in vehicles, motorcycles, tea cans, unsecured bags, and so on, were detonated, causing extensive mayhem and loss of life throughout Coimbatore.

The investigation later revealed that an Islamists terrorist organisation named Al-Ummah and it’s chief Syed Ahmed Basha were responsible for the attack. Basha had planned the attack in retaliation to the 1997 riots. Basha, the first accused and the founder-president of Al-Ummah, was then sentenced to life imprisonment under Section 120-B (conspiracy) of the IPC read with additional IPC offences, including murder, in 2003, and three years of hard imprisonment under Section 153 A (1) of the IPC (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion). Basha’s brother, Nawab Khan, was also sentenced to life in jail and 27 years in prison too. Now, Khan’s son identified as Muhammed Dhalha has been arrested for his involvement in the recent cylinder blasts that happened in the city on October 22.

AAP-led Punjab govt spent over 1.8 crores on Facebook ads with over 77% in Gujarat, here is what we found

Several netizens have raised questions about the money being spent by the Aam Aadmi Party-led Punjab government on Facebook ads that are running in Gujarat. Twitter user The Kejriwal Files said, “Debt-ridden Punjab govt. spent 1.74 crores on advertisements out of which ~1.4 crores were spent in Gujarat only (On a single Facebook page). Punjab govt. is spending crores on print media. i.e- ads on the front page for over a week PAN India.”

OpIndia’s investigation

We at OpIndia decided to check the information available in the public domain to see how far netizens’ allegations are true. It is Facebook’s policy to show details of the advertisements being run by a Facebook page. You can check the ads, how much money is spent, and the target audience among other parameters.

We picked three parameters to check the ads for the last 25 days running on Punjab Government’s official page targeting Gujarat in particular. Here is what we found.

Under the About tab of the Government of Punjab’s official Facebook page, there is a section called Page Transparency. Facebook enables this section on every page so that the users can see who is running the page, who the admins are (sometimes only the number of admins and their countries are visible) if the page is running ads and the topics of the ads. In this case, The Punjab Government’s page was running ads under category(s) social issues, elections or politics.

There is a sub-section Ad Library where users can see the details of the ads the page is running. The page started running ads on October 2. First, we checked how much the Government of Punjab has spent and where it was spent. Under the audience section in Ad Library, we changed the timeline to 90 days. By the time this report was published, a total of Rs 1,83,98,000 (One crore Eighty-Three Lakhs Ninty Eight Thousand) was spent by the Punjab Government only on Facebook ads. The page ran a total of 136 ads.

Source: Ad Library/Government of Punjab/Facebook

As per the information available, 77.8% of the money was spent on the target audience in Gujarat. Only 19.5% for Punjab, 1.5% for Maharashtra, 1.2% for Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana, and so on. The page ran 66 ads targeting Gujarat, 41 for Punjab, 9 for Maharashtra, 20 for Rajasthan, 20 for Delhi, and so on.

Interestingly, most of the ads were not in Punjabi but in Hindi. In the video ads, the Chief Minister of Punjab extensively talked about the work that has been done by the Chief Minister of Delhi and AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal in Delhi. OpIndia does not authenticate the claims made in the video ads about AAP’s work in Delhi.

Initially, there were no subtitles on the ads but then subtitles in Marathi started to appear. Even those ads were not in Punjabi but in Hindi. In all the ads, CM Mann talked about Delhi first and then either said similar work is being done in Punjab or would be done in Punjab. He added, “if honest governments are across the country, similar work is possible”. The maximum money spent on these ads was between Rs 35,000 to Rs 40,000. These ads with Marathi subtitles were visible only to the people of Maharashtra.

Source: Ad Library/Government of Punjab/Facebook

Then came ads with Gujarati subtitles that started to run by the page. These ads were visible in Gujarat only.

One of the ads that ran from October 2 to October 23 targeted Rajasthan and other states. Even in this ad, only 1% to 6% of the target audience was from Delhi.

Source: Ad Library/Government of Punjab/Facebook

Another ad that ran through the same time period targeted Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, and Himachal Pradesh with only a 15% share of Delhi. Punjab was still missing from the target audience.

The target audience consistently remained around Rajasthan, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh with little share from Delhi. Notably, Rajasthan has assembly elections scheduled for 2023, Haryana for 2024, Himachal Pradesh for 2022, and Delhi has MCD elections most probably parallel to Gujarat Elections.

The average spent on these ads remained between Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000 with over one million impressions of all ads.

From October 5, the official page of the Punjab Government started running ads with descriptions in Gujarati. Initially, the money spent on these ads varied from Rs 100 to Rs 2,000 with one exception where Rs 90,000 to Rs 100,000 was spent.

Source: Ad Library/Government of Punjab/Facebook

On October 8, another ad targeting audience from Gujarat spent another Rs 70,000 to Rs 80,000 on a single ad.

From October 10 onwards, the money spent on every ad raised exponentially. On multiple ads/ad groups (examples here, here and here) that ran between October 10 to October 26 with Gujarati text and a target audience from Gujarat, over Rs 10 lakh were spent on the ads. On two ads in the same period, Rs 500,000 to Rs 600,000 were spent.

Source: Ad Library/Government of Punjab/Facebook
Source: Ad Library/Government of Punjab/Facebook

Since October 10, nine ads ran or still running by the page targeting the Punjab region. However, none of these ads had a budget of over Rs 800,000. These ads were made in the Punjabi language. Please note that these are the same ads that ran in Hindi. The statements by the people in the video were dubbed for these ads either in Hindi or Punjabi depending on what language they spoke and the target audience.

From October 13, ads with Gujarati text and Hindi voiceover started again. Currently, thirteen ads are running on the page. Out of these thirteen ads, six are targeting audience from Punjab while seven are targeting audiences from Gujarat. On two of the Gujarat ads (here and here), Rs 10 lakh each has already been spent.

Notably, the information available here is only about the amount the Punjab government has spent on Facebook with a target audience spread over several poll-bound states. Information on money spent on ads on other platforms like hoardings, local newspapers, national newspapers, TV channels, News channels, Google ads and more is available in bits and pieces.

Analysing The Wire’s ‘apology’ to readers, its victimhood and indulgence in self-glory and how it does not own up they fabricated ‘evidence’

The Wire, late on Wednesday night, issued a statement which as per them was an ‘apology’ on the pure fiction they had conjured up in their Meta stories to readers and a ‘promise’ to do better.

The Wire ‘apologises’ to its readers

The Wire claimed that while they retracted their Meta stories after conducting internal review of technical source material used with help of external experts, they are also conducting a comprehensive editorial review of internal editorial processes. The Wire claimed that the process is still on but their one important editorial learning was that when they have ‘complex technical evidence’, whether brought by someone from their team or a freelancer, all processes that involve technical skill will be cross-checked by ‘independent and reputed experts in field’.

‘Independent experts’ who had ‘verified’ this story said they hadn’t

The Wire, in its Meta story had claimed they had independent and reputed experts in the field who had verified their data and approved of the findings. Both the experts cited by The Wire, where even the founding Editor Siddharth Varadarajan had taken a byline, eventually had denied giving these ‘proofs’. Perhaps The Wire should have independent experts verifying proofs submitted by independent experts and then maybe some more independent experts verifying all these because, clearly, The Wire team had even forged statements by independent experts’ comments. The Wire does not address any of this in its ‘apology’.

The Wire also does not mention how some of the team members that worked on the Meta story were also involved in the Tek Fog fiction it had unleashed upon humanity earlier in January this year. Devesh Kumar and Ayushman Kaul, who is associated with London based organisation Logically.ai which offers doxxing services amongst others, worked on the Tek Fog story. The Tek Fog stories also now stand withdrawn but Tek Fog does not find a mention in this ‘apology’. Tek Fog story also cited unnamed experts who had claimed to have ‘verified’ these findings they had produced. Tek Fog was so hyped and taken on face value that it led to primetime debates on news channels where NDTV India’s Ravish Kumar went overly dramatic despite his monotone. The issue was even raised in Parliament and investigation was demanded. While Tek Fog stories stand withdrawn, The Wire has not apologised for same or even acknowledged they have taken their readers for a ride by building up on a story on figment of imagination of their writers.

Both these stories made it appear like the BJP, their IT Cell head in particular Amit Malviya, were all too powerful and controlling an army of zombies and hijacking all online conversations and discourse. However, later it turned out how one of their own manipulated a bunch of anti-Modi zombies into believing fabricated ‘proofs’. So much has been their effect that a section of their supporters still believe in these fiction despite The Wire themselves taking them back. One shouldn’t be too surprised if tomorrow they start floating that it was BJP/Amit Malviya who ‘infiltrated’ their ‘independent experts’ and made them do this. In fact, some have already started building this up as a ground that BJP did this because The Wire is ‘reputed’ and ‘important for democracy’. Actually, they are just upset they couldn’t get away with Meta the way they got away with Tek Fog and things went from bad to worse and they had to withdraw even Tek Fog stories, quite quietly.

“We were deceived”

The Wire then says how one of their teammates subjected them to deception in this. They haven’t named him/her/them yet but everyone seems to be thinking it is Devesh Kumar, who has since deleted all his social media presence. Interestingly, Varadarajan, who took a byline for the same and Jahnavi Sen, their BA in Philosophy ‘tech expert’ who first reported the Meta story that started it all, are getting a free pass. It is simple. They chose not to be devil’s advocate and question what was being presented to them because they wanted to believe it. That this is some sort of ‘war’ and they are fighting the big demon BJP and all is fair in love and war drama. One really does not need to be a tech expert to know how the rubbish that was presented as ‘evidence’ could not pass the smell test. Varadarajan went ahead with it anyway. This ‘teammate deceived us’ is just The Wire equivalent of ‘dog ate my homework’ excuse.

And who is the reporter who had ‘personal relationship’ with one of their Meta insiders? The little bit of information was slipped by The Wire when they withdrew their story but then they edited out this part in the web version. The Wire is likely having pillow talk being passed off as evidence and no one is even asking for accountability and glorifying them for ‘owning up’.

The Wire then writes, “The Wire acknowledges that the internal editorial processes which preceded publication of these stories did not meet the standards that The Wire sets for itself and its readers expect from it. To have rushed to publish a story we believed was reliable without having the associated technical evidence vetted independently is a failure of which we cannot permit repetition.” Bro, your reports, including your Founding Editor Siddharth Varadarajan shared emails as well as video proof of ‘expert evidence’ – which was all fabricated. And you allowed its repetition. Tek Fog was first, Meta was repetition. You got away with Tek Fog, but Meta made you bend the knee.

Why no apology to the subjects of these stories where The Wire falsely accused them of wrongdoings

Interestingly, The Wire only ‘apologises’ to its readers because the ‘story did not hold up’. It says, “this combination of not fully grasping the complexities of technology and a slippage in editorial assessment of tech-related matter resulted in the publication of stories which did not eventually hold up. For this we owe an apology to our readers.” Umm, what about Meta? What about the BJP or Amit Malviya whom you falsely accused of being superhumans? Your ‘team’ conducted AMA on Reddit about Tek Fog and made wild allegations, all of which still remain. Your report on Tek Fog was used by some outlets to defame India and accuse central government of curbing press freedom? The dominos effect that was unleashed by you guys, a simple ‘apology to readers’ without an iota of responsibility just does not cut it. More so because you and your ilk hound others for smallest of mistakes. There is no reason why you at The Wire should not be subjected to same level of accountability.

And then the self-glorification. The Wire concludes by saying, “in making this open admission and putting in place more robust processes for checking and cross-checking documents and indeed all source-based information, we are promising our readers that there will be no recurrence.” The ‘open admission’ is half-hearted. There has been no mention of Tek Fog absurdity in this.

Not an exception, but the norm

And you cannot hide behind the veil of ‘technical process’. The Wire and their Founding Editor have been at the forefront of misinformation because deep in their hearts they think they are fighting a ‘war’. This is what the mainstream media, especially activist journalism of left wing has been doing all these decades. They believe their own lies, not accept mistakes, steadfast with propaganda than truth. And even in face of mounting tech proof, they double down and brazen it out. Imagine what they would do with issues that are just about political or ideological narrative?

For example, soon after the Republic Day riots in January 2021 when hundreds of so-called farmers desecrated the Red Fort, one ‘protestor’ Navreet Singh was killed after the tractor he was using to run over police overturned. The Wire, however, published an article insinuating that he had died of bullet injuries and not because of the injuries he sustained from the overturning of the tractor. The article further claimed that the victim’s relatives spoke to the doctor who carried out the autopsy who claimed that while there was bullet injury, ‘his hands were tied’, thereby insinuating that the UP government is trying to coverup.

What is intriguing to note here is that despite the refusal of the Uttar Pradesh Police and the deputy CMO of the hospital where the autopsy was conducted expressly denying that Navreet died of a bullet injury, The Wire did not bother to mention the same in their headline. Instead, it went ahead with a misleading headline to raise aspersions on the authenticity of the autopsy report. The District Magistrate, Rampur, even shared a signed declaration of the three doctors who had carried out the autopsy that the allegations reported by The Wire were false.

The signed declaration states that none of the three doctors who were involved in the autopsy had spoken to any mediapersons or any other persons. The autopsy was video-recorded and the findings were given in sealed envelop to the officers. Subsequently, The Wire updated the article, but they had no qualms in stirring the pot that could have led to a law and order situation.

But instead of saying sorry, especially to people they spread lies about (they apologised in Meta story to readers, not to Meta or Malviya who were subject of their lies), The Wire brazens it out. And it will do so tomorrow too when there’s another ideological issue they conjure up and most of those who are calling it out today will likely side with them, forgetting The Wire’s history of shoddy reporting. That is ‘liberal’ privilege.

In short, The Wire conjured up fake evidences to perpetuate a preconceived narrative in their head and their Editor turned a blind eye to gaping holes, not once but twice, when actual experts called them out, they doubled and tripled down to brazen it out. The Wire and their supporters even accused those pointing out loopholes to be ‘overly critical’ of a platform that was ‘putting out truth’ about the ‘fascist Modi government’. And after being fully exposed they are playing victim and are actually being hailed for ‘owning up’ on their lies.

1984 anti-Sikh Riots accused Jagdish Tytler attends oath ceremony of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge in presence of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi

On Wednesday (October 26), the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) accused the Congress party of continuing to back the perpetrators of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

Delhi BJP spokesperson Tajinder Bagga took to Twitter to share that Jagdish Tytler was present at the AICC headquarters in the national capital when Mallikarjun Kharge was elected Congress president. He lambasted the party for its “love” for “killers of Sikhs” by posting a picture of Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Meira Kumar sitting in the same room as Jagdish Tytler.

“Congress invited Killers of Sikhs Jagdish Tytler as Special guest in oath ceremony of Mallikarjun Kharge. Congress and Sonia Gandhi’s love for Killers of Sikhs proved once again,” he tweeted.

BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa also slammed the Gandhi family for patronizing the anti-Sikh riots accused. “By inviting Tytler, the murderer of Sikhs, to be the chief guest at Kharge ji’s oath ceremony, the Gandhi family demonstrated once more that they will continue to protect and honor Tytler, Kamal Nath. The Gandhi family carried out the 1984 Sikh massacre with the help of these killers and continues to reward these people to this day,” Sirsa tweeted.

One of the accused former Congress MPs, Jagdish Tytler, told CNN IBN that he traveled around in Delhi with former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi following Indira Gandhi’s death and found that his entire area was peaceful. According to CNN News, the Akali Dal and BJP criticized Tytler and questioned whether Rajiv was also involved in stirring unrest.

The Nanavati commission accused the former MP as one of the riot organizers. In addition, the accused had refused to undergo lie detector tests. The 1984 anti-Sikh riots erupted in the aftermath of the assassination of then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and culminated in the horrific killings of over 2800 people, according to government data. Congress leaders Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler were accused of a direct role in instigating the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in India.

Jagdish Tytler was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1991 and served as the Union Minister of State for Surface Transport until being re-elected in 2004. He was only dropped in 2009 due to the controversy over his actions in the 1984 riots.

Congress party has always had the policy of patronizing the accused of the anti-Sikh riots. Kamal Nath, another Congress leader accused of leading the violent mob, was appointed chief minister of Madhya Pradesh in 2018. Prior to it, he was elected nine times from Madhya Pradesh’s Chhindwara Lok Sabha seat and handled several portfolios. Kamal Nath is accused of leading a violent mob attack on Gurdwara Rakabgunj on November 1, 1984, in which the mob had burnt two Sikhs, a father, and a son alive.

The CBI gave a clean chit to Tytler during the second term of the UPA government. However, the closure report was rejected by a Sessions Court, and an investigation into his role was requested. Despite public calls to cut relations with Tytler, Congress has frequently accommodated him on a public platform. In January 2019, Congress was criticized for granting Tytler a front-row seat during the ceremony of former Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit taking over as Delhi Congress chief on January 16, 2019.

Sajjan Kumar, another senior Congress leader who was in the party till 2018, was convicted of his role in the 1984 riots and was sentenced to life imprisonment by Delhi High Court.
