‘Let that sink in’: Elon Musk enters Twitter headquarters carrying a sink, changes bio to ‘Chief Twit’

0

Elon Musk has entered Twitter headquarters, carrying a ceramic sink. He shared a video of his entry with the caption “Let that sink in”.

The world’s richest man, known on social media for his humourous comebacks and whimsical ideas, shared the video to convey that he is now about to finalize the takeover of the social media giant.

“Let that sink in” is an English phrase used to ask someone to realize the importance of a statement, or event.

Musk added further that he is currently meeting a lot of ‘cool’ people at Twitter.

Musk has also changed his Twitter bio to ‘Chief Twit’, and has added ‘Twitter HQ’ as the location. He had earlier shared that buying Twitter is the first step towards making X, the everything App.

‘Twit’ is slang for a stupid person.

Musk’s Twitter Bio

Earlier, the Tesla and SpaceX boss had announced that he is about to finalize the Twitter deal by Friday.

A deadline of October 28th has been set by Elon Musk to complete the purchase of Twitter. Twitter halted its employees’ equity rewards as an indication that the deal is moving through. Layoffs were already scheduled in the company as prior to Musk’s proposal, Twitter management intended to lay off about a quarter of its workers, saving $800 million in salary.

In April 2022, Elon Musk offered to buy Twitter at $44 billion and said he would like to take the company private. The deal was approved by the board of directors at Twitter. However, later Musk said that Twitter was allegedly holding back information about the spam accounts on the platform. Twitter, on the other hand, denied the allegations.

Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee clears field trials of first genetically modified food crop, indigenously developed GM mustard

India’s first indigenously developed transgenic hybrid mustard has been given the green light for seed production by the Union Environment Ministry’s Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC). It provides opportunities for farmers to grow India’s first GM food crop. The variety is named Dhara Mustard Hybrid 11 (DMH-11).

The transgenic mustard hybrid DMH-11, developed by the Centre for Genetic Manipulation of Crop Plants (CGMCP) at Delhi University, was recommended for “environmental release” on October 18. However, it is not yet clear whether the GEAC’s approval would also serve as the official government nod. DMH-11 contains two alien genes isolated from a soil bacterium called Bacillus amyloliquefaciens that enable the breeding of high-yielding commercial mustard hybrids.

The recommendation, according to the GEAC, is valid for four years following the issuance of the approval letter. According to the minutes of the GEAC meeting held on October 18, which were published on Wednesday, additional research and coordinated trials must be carried out together with the Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) within two years.

The minutes state that after the environmental release by the applicant within two years, field demonstration studies on the effect of the mustard variety on honey bees and other pollinators should also be carried out under the supervision of the ICAR, and a report on this should be submitted to the GEAC. The GEAC said the commercial use of DMH-11 hybrids will be subject to the Seed Act, 1966, and related rules and regulations.

According to a report by the Business Standard, Deepak Pental, former vice-chancellor of Delhi University, and one of the main scientists behind DMH-11 said, “If all the steps from here fall in place, then it would mean that farmers can get a hold of GM-based mustard hybrids in the next two years.”

Approximately 6 million farmers in the states of Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, and Madhya Pradesh grow mustard on 6.5-7 million hectares of land. It has been revealed that DMH-11 produces 30% higher yields than current types. While the global average production of mustard is around 2,000 kilogrammes per hectare, the average output of the present mustard types is approximately 1,000 to 1,200 kilogrammes per hectare. India has only allowed GM (genetically modified) breeding techniques for cotton up to this point. Environmental activists prevented the commercial launch of GM brinjal in the past.

Apart from the cultivation of BT Cotton, India also allows the import of BT Soya oil, but local cultivation is not allowed. But it is alleged that a large number of farmers are ‘illegally’ importing BT Soya seeds to cultivate in India.

Assam: Three Swedish preachers arrested for violating visa norms by indulging in conversion activities, to be deported

0

Assam police have arrested three persons from Sweden for violating visa norms by indulging in conversion activities. The three Swedish nationals had entered India on tourist visa, but they were found to be involved in religious preaching activities, following which they were arrested from Naharkatia in the Dibrugarh district in eastern Assam.

The arrested Swedish nationals have been identified as Hannah Mikaela Bloom, Marcus Arne Henrik Bloom, and Susanna Elisabeth Hakanason.

The three were trying to lure people to convert to Christianity in tea garden areas in the region, and they were arrested while running a proselytization event. They were trying to lure people in the area to Christianity under the pretext of a program titled “Peace and Healing Prayer Festival” scheduled from October 25 to 27. The event is being organised at Achabam Ghinai 1 No. playground in Nakarkatia by United Churches Fellowship and Bless Assam Mission Network.

People were invited to seek blessings and get healed in the event, but in reality, the intent of the program was to convert locals into Christianity.

Confirming the development, DSP Namrup, Naba Kumar Borah said, “Three Swedish nationals came for a meeting in Naharkatia and as per their tourist visa they are not supposed to deliver any lectures.”

“As there was a violation as per the section 14 Foreigners Act, a case has been registered and later arrested,” he further added.

Additional Superintendent of Police Bitul Chetia said that police initiated a suo moto case against the trio for attending the religious event violating visa norms after getting information about the same.

The trio were produced in a local court where they were found guilty under the Foreigners Act. The court directed the district administration and the police to arrange for their deportation. ASP Chetia said that the Swedish nationals will be sent to Guwahati on Thursday and after that, they will be deported to Sweden.

The prayer meeting organised by United Churches Fellowship, a body of several churches, is being held with permission from authorities. After the arrest of the trio, a large number of people, mostly from tea gardens, gathered outside the police station to protest against the arrest. They chanted slogans against the police, and started praying there.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge forms a 47-member steering committee to replace the CWC, Shashi Tharoor not included

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has formed a 47-member steering committee that will now function in place of the Congress Working Committee. The decision was announced by a press release issued on 26th October 2022 by the Congress general secretary KC Venugopal.

In the notice, KC Venugopal said, “As per article XV(b) of the Constitution of the Indian National Congress, the Congress President has constituted the Steering Committee which will function in place of the Congress Working Committee. The list of the members of the Steering Committee is enclosed herewith.”

The list of the members includes all three members of the Gandhi family who are active in politics, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Apart from the first family in Congress, the list includes several veteran party leaders like Dr. Manmohan Singh, AK Antony, Jairam Ramesh, Randeep Surjewala, Ambika Soni, Ajay Maken, Harish Rawat, Abhishek Manu Singhvi and many other senior leaders loyal to the Gandhi family. The 47-member list covers regional representation among the included leaders.

The list does not include Shashi Tharoor. Image Source: Twitter handle of ANI

The 47-member committee also includes Anand Sharma, a member of the G-23 rebel group in the party. The group had written to Sonia Gandhi demanding sweeping changes within the Congress party.

Interestingly, senior Congress leader and Kerala MP Shashi Tharoor is excluded from this list. He had contested the election for the post of Congress president against Mallikarjun Kharge. This exclusion is speculated to be a punishment to the Trivandrum MP for contesting against the Gandhi family loyalist.

Shashi Tharoor had openly expressed his views about the elections being hosted on an uneven playing field during his election campaign. Though he had said that all is well within the party. After Kharge was elected as the president of the Congress party, Shashi Tharoor accepted that the Gandhi family will remain the foundational pillar of the party. Now, he has failed to secure a spot in the Congress Steering Committee.

The Congress Steering Committee will function as the Congress Working Committee till a new CWC is constituted. Earlier today, all members of the existing CWC submitted their resignations, along with all general secretaries and in-charges of various departments in the Congress party.

The existing officer-bearers of the party have resigned to enable the new president to form new teams. An election will take place to elect 12 members of the CWC, while 11 members will be nominated. The party president will also select the other office bearers. The new CWC will be reconstituted by Mallikarjun Kharge after the plenary session of the Congress party scheduled to be held in March-April next year, where his election as the party president will be ratified. Therefore, the Congress Steering Committee will run the party till that time.

Zimbabwean fan wants cricket team to beat Pakistan in T20 World Cup as revenge for sending fake Mr. Bean to Zimbabwe

ICC Cricket T20 World Cup 2022 is being hosted in Australia. The 24th match of the Supre 12 round will be played between two teams in Group 2 – Zimbabwe and Pakistan – on October 27 at Perth. Though fans of every sports team want their team to win, sometimes the sports fans have an extra reason to hope that their team will defeat the opponent. Such a situation has evolved in the Zimbabwe-Pakistan match, as one fan from Zimbabwe wants the Zimbabwe cricket team to beat Pakistan in the upcoming match as revenge for sending fake Mr. Bean as a guest in a comedy program in Zimbabwe.

It started with the official Twitter handle of the Pakistan Cricket Board sharing photos of Pakistani cricketers practising for the upcoming match.

Zimbabwean cricket fan Ngugi Chasura replied, “As Zimbabweans, we won’t forgive you…you once gave us that Fraud Pak Bean instead of Mr. Bean Rowan ..we will settle the matter tomorrow just pray the rains will save you.”

On being asked about the details of his grievances, Ngugi Chasura tweeted, “They gave us Pak Bean instead of Mr Bean on one of our local events called agriculture show.”

Asif Mohammad is a Pakistani citizen who is a look-alike of Mr. Bean, that is, Rowan Atkinson. Asif Mohammad, supposedly known as Mr Pak Bean, was called to Zimbabwe in 2016 for some programs where he was supposed to entertain the people. According to reports, the performance by the Mr Bean look-alike at the Harare International Conference Centre was a massive flop show, as there was little laughter in the ‘comedy-show’. Despite being labelled as ‘Mr Pak Bean’, he didn’t have any stand-alone act, he had performed with other local artists and delivered a very disappointing performance.

According to Ngugi Chasura, this Mr. Paki Bean’s show was charged $10 per ticket and had no value for money as such. He, therefore, wished for the Pakistani cricket team to be defeated in the world T20 championship match against Zimbabwe so that the Pakistanis get a lesson.

More tweets and replies revealed that Mr. Pak Bean has also appeared in some advertisements. Taking a jibe at Pakistan’s poor economic condition, Ngugi Chasura replied, “Maybe he is the other source of income to the Pakistan government doing international frauds.”

Ngugi Chasura was also enraged at the way he was provided police security by the Zimbabwe government with all the protocols when he was in Zimbabwe for the show.

In the first match at the World T20 championship, India defeated Pakistan by 4 wickets on 23rd October 2022.

Russian Defence Minister Shergei Shoibu expresses concern over possible use of Dirty Bomb by Ukraine in a telephonic conversation with Rajnath Singh

0

On Wednesday, (October 26) Russian Defence Minister Shergei Shoibu held a telephonic conversation with his Indian counterpart Rajnath Singh and expressed Russia’s concerns over the provocation and potential use of a Dirty Bomb by Ukraine. After the Russian Defence Minister’s request, the two had a conversation over phone in which both the ministers discussed bilateral defence cooperation and the alarming situation in the war zone of Ukraine.

“On October 26, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu had a telephone conversation w/ Defence Minister of #India  Rajnath Singh. They discussed the situation in #Ukraine. Sergei Shoigu conveyed his concerns about possible provocations by Ukraine with the use of a ‘dirty bomb’,” Russian Embassy in India tweeted.

In a series of tweets, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh informed about his conversation with the Russian Defence Minister. “Had a telephonic conversation with the Defence Minister of Russia, Mr Sergei Shoigu today. We discussed bilateral defence cooperation as well as the deteriorating situation in Ukraine,” he tweeted.

In the next tweet in the series, Singh talked about Russia’s concerns about the Dirty bomb and reiterated India’s stand on the need to return to diplomatic means of resolving conflicts by indulging in dialogue. He briefed me on the evolving situation in Ukraine, including his concerns about possible provocations through the use of a ‘dirty bomb’. “I reiterated India’s position on the need to pursue the path of dialogue and diplomacy for an early resolution of the conflict,” Singh in another tweet.

The Indian Defence Minister also pointed out that both Russia and Ukraine should refrain from using nuclear or radiological weapons as it would be against the basic tenets of humanity. He tweeted, “Also pointed out that the nuclear option should not be resorted to by any side as the prospect of the usage of nuclear or radiological weapons goes against the basic tenets of humanity.”

Following Russia’s request to have urgent discussions on Ukraine’s use of a “dirty bomb,” the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) convened behind closed doors today to consider Moscow’s claim.

In a briefing on radiation security threats by the chief of nuclear, biological and chemical protection troops lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, the Russian Defence Ministry revealed that it has information about Ukraine’s plans to explode a dirty bomb in order to provoke and accuse Russia of using mass destruction weapon. This is planned to be done in order to launch an anti-Russian campaign.

Shoigu has engaged in multiple phone conversations with NATO defence ministers on the same issue since Sunday, according to Reuters. Ukraine and its Western allies have denied Russia’s claim that Ukraine is planning to use a radioactive “dirty bomb,” and have expressed concern that Moscow is using this as an excuse to escalate the war.

On October 23, Russia’s Defence Minister, Sergei Shoigu, spoke with NATO counterparts to warn against Ukraine’s potential use of a “dirty nuclear bomb.” The Russian Defence Ministry stated in a statement that Shoigu informed French Defence Minister Sebastien Lecornu that the situation in Ukraine is significantly deteriorating and heading toward ‘uncontrolled escalation.’

Shoigu went on to say that Ukraine may utilize a dirty nuclear bomb in the war. A dirty bomb is a nuclear weapon that uses ordinary explosives loaded with radioactive material.

Shoigu later spoke via phone with UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace and Turkish counterpart Hulusi Akar. In these conversations, he expressed his concern about Ukraine’s potential provocation through the usage of a dirty bomb.

Notably, On October 19, India issued a fresh advisory for Indians in Ukraine urging them to leave the country and warning Indian citizens to avoid travelling to war-torn Ukraine.

Dirty Bomb: What is it?

A dirty bomb is a conventional bomb that is loaded with radioactive, biological, or chemical elements that are dispersed in an explosion. The use of radioactive elements would classify it as a radiological dispersal device (RDD), a term that is frequently used alternately with “dirty bomb.” A dirty bomb is comparatively far less destructive than a nuclear device, such as an atomic bomb or hydrogen bomb, whose fission or fusion reactions cause widespread destruction.

Producing them necessitates uranium enrichment capabilities that most countries lack. A dirty bomb is less damaging and easier to produce than a nuclear bomb. Its effects would contaminate a specific area and the people who live there, either through direct radiation or through inhalation or ingestion of contaminated substances. Its primary goal could be to instil fear in a populace rather than to commit mass murder.

“A dirty bomb is a ‘weapon of mass disruption,’ with contamination and worry as the primary goals,” the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission, an independent organization, describes.

This means that only those in close proximity to the explosion site would be exposed to radiation levels high enough to induce severe disease. Health concerns would arise from contaminated dust, food, or water in a wider range. The minuscule amounts of radioactive material required to create this effect in a bomb can be found in hospitals, research facilities, industrial sites, or military stations.

Saurav Dutt’s new book ‘Modi and Me’ studies Narendra Modi led India’s fight against anti-India and anti-Hindu forces, an excerpt by the author

0

An excerpt from Indian-born British writer Saurav Dutt’s new book ‘Modi And Me’, by the author himself.

Perhaps we have been asleep all this time. I certainly know that I had been. Whether Indian-born, a patriotic NRI, or an Indian heritage citizen living in a foreign land, we have all inherently denied it. What I am referring to is a truism that aligns one’s mind, spirit and body with what India, what Bharat, represents and specifically the magnificence of Hinduism and its political, cultural and trenchant character and individualistic cousin-Hindutva.

I certainly had been asleep before 2014 and that is a significant year indeed. It is the year Prime Minister Narendra Modi ascended to the premiership of the largest democracy in the world, the bastion of one of the oldest and respected faiths known to human existence. I was hitherto embedded in a state of mind that afflicted many Indians before that time, a disconsolate sense of abandonment from what it means to be a true Hindu, a true Indian, a true lover of the Mother Earth that shapes every Hindu from when they are born, to when they pass, and are reborn again. I was also a victim of the deft colonial gaze that has swept through the rubric of every generation since Robert Clive effectively birthed the British Empire, no matter how much I tried to deny it, it was there as it was within every Indian. To deny its nomadic eye is to be a fool.

You see before Narendra Modi gave the BJP and the RSS the wings which it needed to fly many Hindus and Indians were trapped in a kind of punishing cycle of self-psychosis and flagellation. Since India was ‘free’ after partition Indians the world over have grappled with what it means to embrace the identity of a new nation and the eminent religion and way of life that was always its undercurrent. We have been taught to be ashamed of the idea of a strident Hindu polity and philosophy, to accept all those years of imperialism and plunder at the hands of the British and Europeans, and the hundreds of years of barbaric bloodshed meted out by the power-hungry invaders of the Mughals, Arabs and Islamic invaders.

One would think an emergent nation would embrace its history, its culture, its Hindu and Indic foundation, instead the opposite has happened. Promoted by a faulty Nehruvian idealisation, and meek, obeisant nature, the Hindu, the Indian, has accepted second place. This acceptance has come about through a humbling which is entirely of its own doing.

I too accepted this punitive vision of India, one that was blunted by poverty, self-hatred, clinging to a sense of self that was secular and accepting of all religions within its contiguous boundaries, one that was too timid to proclaim Hindu identity as one worthy of pride.

The Hindu is unfortunately that most faulty of individuals, an individual deeply entrenched with truisms, philosophies, cultural edicts and an attachment to self-flagellation. We were happy to accept second best as long as we embraced Sanatana Dharma and the karmic justice and fortuity that was marked on our forehead. We would be humbled by the order and drum roll of the coming of the Englishman, happy to run into the night with no possessions when Islamic murderers sought to convert, rape, slaughter, and eradicate us.

And far too many of us accepted this with a shake of the head and an enthusiastic bow. Yes sir, yes sir, three bags full. That this was a civilisation that fought back relentlessly over centuries with the mighty march of the likes of Shivaji, Rani of Jhansi, Subhas Chandra Bose, Shaheed Udham Singh, Veer Savarkar, Chandrashekhar Azad, Rabindranath Tagore, and Ram Prasad Bismil, was conveniently forgotten in our history books. Somewhere along the line we forgot who we are and accepted the image of the whitewashed brown sahib that Nehru and his scions wished to promote and emulate. We became ashamed to be Hindus, to be Indians, chuckling as foreigners, who did not understand or appreciate a history bedevilled, told us we needed to be civilised, that the Mughals gave far more than they took, that we would all be better off had the Raj and the East India Company remained in place and continued to steal from us.

It was a long and treacherous road, a suicide note to our civilisation, history and culture that permitted the creation of a failed nation-Pakistan-the balkanisation of Jammu and Kashmir, the ethnocide of the Hindu Pandits from Kashmir, the creation of Bangladesh, insurgencies from Pakistan and China against our populace, and the permitting of the immolation of our nation state and its bedrock-Hinduism-from within by brown sahibs masquerading as Indians who are happy to disparage the nation and all its elements for foreign money, to foreign audiences, for foreign applause.

This sad tale of self-flagellation would have continued had it not been for the incredible ascent of the BJP, the RSS, the ideal of Hindutva, and one Narendra Damodardas Modi. At the time of writing Narendra Modi reigns supreme in his second term and the country has irrevocably changed-for the better. But Indians are a fickle lot, tainted by an inherent self-doubt and weakness, that mistakes strength for bigotry and vulnerable to radical left-wing idolatry and pusillanimous demagoguery. He has tried to accomplish in six to ten years what his predecessors could not, nor wanted to do, in seventy-five at the time of writing.

Only now have we seen the emergence of a nation that is proud to be Hindu, proud to be Indian, proud of its history, takes pride in its fight against colonialism and balkanization and which revels in the might of its cultural roots and vast history. That which was once cause for shame and internal doubt has now been dispelled. We now see a new generation of Indians that are proud of who they are, where they come from, and is thirsty for knowledge of its roots. We now see an Indian population (within Bharat and also outside it) that will not accept the narrative that others write for them.

What are some of these narratives? That India is steeped in poverty, constantly dirt poor, revels in fascism, bigotry and the daily lynching of Muslims, hounding of Christians, rapes its women every hour-the list yawns on and on. Now we fight back against this, we do not accept what critics of this united nation say about us, whether it is the efforts of the brown sepoys writing for US broadsheets and online publications, or through the Abrahamic lens of those foreigners that still think the great unwashed pagans of India need civility and the wonder of Christianity to save their desperate souls.

I titled this short book Modi and Me because it confirms my own political amelioration and better understanding of myself as a Hindu and Indian born individual, but it also applies to the journey of so many others who believed the propaganda, who saw their own country and heritage through a strictly Gandhian lens, who subconsciously hated that they were born in their country and worshipped at the altar of imperialism and the ‘structured’ and ‘orderly’ manipulation of conquerors, who are too afraid to acknowledge the punitive and damaging encroachment of radical Islam, and have no knowledge of their self.

It is an ongoing journey and the beauty of it is that Modi has already accomplished what this nation requires-agreement with and understanding of the rationale of the BJP and particularly the RSS, embracing Hindutva and helping shape its conflagration, and in doing so being proud to be an Indian, and a Hindu, proud enough that you will call out its enemies, critics, and those who demean it and seek to destroy it one affront at a time.

But it took a while for me to get here, as it may take for some of you reading this. That’s what happens when you believe the manipulation and lies that tell you India, and being a Hindu, are built on faulty foundations. It takes incredible fortitude and strength of mind to stay true to your convictions and fight and hopefully by the end of this book you too will not recoil when someone insults your motherland.

Modi and Me, and other books by Saurav Dutt, can be bought on Amazon from this link in both ebook and printed forms.

Wikipedia covering up The Wire’s wrongdoings? Meta fiasco wiped off from Wire’s page, Tek Fog allegations removed too

Wikipedia has wiped off the Meta story from The Wire’s page and has redirected the Tek Fog page to The Wire. Notably, Wikipedia had a detailed page on the Tek Fog “investigation” done by The Wire. There is a detailed discussion among the editors at Wikipedia that can be read in the Talk section of The Wire, where they refused to add any information on Meta Vs The Wire saga as they could not find “any reliable source other than The Wire”.

It is interesting to see Wikipedia subtly attempting to save The Wire from getting egg on the face using loopholes in their own regulations. Ideally, there should be a detailed section on The Wire’s Wikipedia page where all the information on how the publication or people linked to the publication were found to have used forged ‘evidence’ and later removed the stories linked to the saga when they were caught “red-handed”.

The discussion on Meta Vs The Wire saga on Wikipedia

The discussion over Meta Vs The Wire saga (Termed Metagate by Wikipedia) started on October 12, a couple of days after The Wire published its second story in the series blaming Bharatiya Janata Party’s IT Cell Chief Amit Malviya for getting posts removed from Instagram using his special “powers” he got under XCheck program of Meta. OpIndia archived the discussion page before writing this story to make sure the report can be verified with this particular version of the Talk Page. Please note that Wikipedia pages and sections under them are subject to change whenever an editor adds or removes something from them.

Meta officials’ and whistleblower’s words do not matter

During the discussion, it was mentioned that the questions raised by Meta Whistleblower Sophie Zhang over The Wire’s story were rejected by the senior editor Venkat TL. Another editor Yuyutsu Ho questioned the removal of her statement in the matter and said, “Sophie Zhang’s comment as someone who’s worked for Meta and is a whistleblower doesn’t matter?” He also questioned the objective behind removing the explanation given by Chief Information Security Officer at Meta Guy Rosen, who had said that the emails were fabricated.

Source: Wikipedia

The explanation for the removal of Sophie’s comments on the matter was it was her “opinion”, and opinions should not be treated as “evidence”. Venkat TL also questioned how she was relevant to the story. Sophie was the whistleblower in the alleged manipulation of engagement at Meta platforms, spread over several years from 2018 to 2020. If someone who has seen Meta’s working in and out has no relevance in reports based on Meta’s functioning and alleged links to governments and powerful people, it is unclear what could be relevant for the team Wikipedia.

Source: Wikipedia

In the case of Rosen, Venkat TL claimed that as Meta had already released an official statement on the matter, there was no need to add comments to Rosen. Interestingly, Wikipedia tends to rely on multiple sources to cross-check and add more “authenticity” to the content but here, what Rosen, CISO at Meta, said held no relevance.

‘Can’t base on The Wire’s report’

TrangaBellam, the infamous and controversial editor of Wikipedia, said during the discussion that as The Wire wrote the story, it cannot be a reliable source for the Wikipedia section on Metagate. He further pointed out that as there was evidence that The Wire forged the evidence or victim of a trickster, the section should be based on “high quality” sources “preferably from outside India”.

Source: Wikipedia

When a user named Akshaypatill pointed out that there was no need to remove the entire section, TrangaBellam said he would prefer to wait for a few more days. Wikipedia is known for adding updates as quickly as possible. However, in this case, even though several publications were following Meta Vs The Wire saga, a senior editor at Wikipedia found it was okay not to act and sit back for more inputs “to fill the gaps in the story”. He wrote, “I will wait for another few days. There are gaping holes in The Wire’s claims, but they are yet to be documented by some external publication-of-repute outside of the Twitterverse.”

Source: Wikipedia

Another senior editor, Kautilya3, objected to adding the section on The Wire’s page itself and claimed it should have been on Meta’s page. Notably, there is no mention of it on Meta’s page either. TrangaBellam agreed to the argument. Kautilya mentioned that The Washington Post does not have a “Watergate” section as an argument. It is noteworthy that The Washington Post page at least mentions the scandal.

There is an entirely separate page on Watergate on Wikipedia, which is why the WaPo entry has no separate section. It is a common practice on Wikipedia to link the page and not add too much information on the matter. However, in the case of Meta Vs The Wire, Wikipedia not only decided to remove the section but also decided not to have a section on it anywhere, removing all the traces of it, at least from the platform.

The discussion pointed out that The Wire has been “fooled again and again”. Akshaypatill said it would be better to write the section after The Wire reviews its reports, which might never happen.

When an editor at Wikipedia who goes by the name Captain Jack Sparrow mentioned that it looked like a deliberate fabrication, another editor, Tayi Arajakate, objected to blaming the publication. He said, “One of their reporters almost certainly fabricated material, but I don’t think it makes sense to accuse the publication as a whole, considering they gave the ids of the experts to outside parties for them to verify, which has led to this. One of the experts is also fairly clear that he was only contacted by the reporter in question and blames the publication for not verifying. [It is] most likely a case of a reporter duping the publication rather than an external party doing so.”

Source: Wikipedia

Arajakate further sided with The Wire as they “retracted the stories”. He said, “As far as editorial standards are concerned, this is how one is expected to respond to poor stories and is a positive indicator.” TrangaBellam said the whole scene “does not affect the credibility of the publication” and added Wikipedia should just refrain from using it as a source for tech-related information.

Following this discussion on the ongoing matter came the red flags over the Tek Fog page Wikipedia had created based majorly on the information published by The Wire. Interestingly, TrangaBellam said he had urged the editors to be cautious about Tek Fog coverage, but apparently, no one took his warning seriously. He suggested redirecting the Tek Fog page to The Wire. Again, there is not even a single reference to Tek Fog on The Wire’s Wikipedia page. It is interesting to see how Wikipedia editors deleted all the references to Tek Fog and Metagate (Meta Vs The Wire), keeping the kitty clean for The Wire.

On October 22, speaking about Metagate, TrangaBellam said, “I will draft a single paragraph on the episode primarily sourced from Newslaundry, CNN etc.” This report was published on October 26. To date, there has not even a single mention of the matter on The Wire page has appeared.

Netizens reacted to Wikipedia’s actions

Netizens have criticized Wikipedia for the way it has handled Meta Vs The Wire saga. Author and columnist Abhishek Banerjee said, “Do you know how the ecosystem works? On the Wikipedia page for Wire, no mention of Meta fiasco. Edits that were made mentioning this incident were removed quickly. Now the page is “protected”. History is being scrubbed clean before our eyes. Ecosystem protecting the reputation of the Wire.”

Twitter user Banbreach pointed out that the Tek Fog page was redirected to The Wire page.

Wikipedia has a history of controversies

Wikipedia is considered to be a left-leaning publication. Though it calls itself a user-driven-content based encyclopedia, the editors on Wikipedia often show bias towards left-liberal websites, news portals and individuals. So much so, the co-founder of Wikipedia, Larry Sanger, in an interview with OpIndia, had said, “Wikipedia has become a huge moral hazard” and accused the website of turning into a ‘monocultural establishment organ of propaganda.

Prashant Bhushan spreads another fake news, shares AAP leader’s video claiming that he is BJP MLA

Activist lawyer Prashant Bhushan has been caught spreading yet another fake news on social media. On 26th October 2022, Prashant Bhushan shared a video from his Twitter handle claiming that BJP used Hindus dressed as Muslims to win elections. He shared a video as proof of this claim, saying that a BJP MLA confessed to doing the same.

“चुनाव जीतने के लिए हिंदुओं को मुसलमान वेश में भेजकर भाजपा कैसे दंगे कराती है; सुन लीजिए भाजपा विधायक के मुंह से (How BJP causes riots by sending Hindus disguised as Muslims to win elections; Listen from the mouth of BJP MLA)”, Prashant Bhushan tweeted, along with the video. While the person in the video made the same claim, he is actually not a BJP leader, as claimed by Bhushan. The person seen in the video shared by Prashant Bhushan is actually AAP leader Yatin Oza, who was earlier in BJP.

In the video, Yatin Oza is heard commenting about Bharatiya Janata Party when he was in BJP. However, the fact is that he is in AAP now, and therefore his claims about BJP can’t be taken as gospel truth.

In this video, Yatin Oza says, “This time, five days are very crucial. And I agree with you. Riots can take place during this time. Now, as I have told you, this has been their strategy. In 2001, when I resigned, the by-elections took place. Mr. Narharibhai Amin was the Congress candidate. From this example, you will get to know what these people do, the same that happened with Ahmed Patel recently. Two days before the scheduled date of polling, Narharibhai Amin called me and said, come quickly. It was eight o’clock in the morning. So I reached the election office at eight o’clock. He said, there are a few Muslim leaders in the Congress party who wish that I don’t win this election.”

Yatin Oza further said, “Sola housing and Wadaj housing are the strong Hindutva hardliner societies there. He said that more than 100 Muslims have reached that society and distributed pamphlets calling people to vote for Narharibhai Amin. I laughed at him. I told him to call 500 men and bring those 100 men here. When 30 to 40 of these 100 people were caught, we found that all of them were Hindus. They wore skull caps like Muslims. They had kept a beard like you. They were trained for three months to do this so that they look like Muslims.”

Yatin Oza says, in this video, “I could know this because I had seen the day Modi joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and left the RSS. Two Patel Muslims came to the Saraspur temple. I know them. They kept bones, etc. in the temple and left. They went half a kilometer away. The five hundred people standing back near the temple then started shouting that these Muslims have come and kept the bones, etc. in the temple. And the communal riots started.”

He further said, “The same thing they tried to repeat in the Sabarmati by-election. But I caught them. The same thing they have done in Hardik’s public meeting. They sent about 50 to 100 Muslims. In fact, Hindus pretend to be Muslims by wearing skull caps. The next day, Amit Shah gave a statement that they were Congress-sponsored Muslims.”

It is notable that Yatin Oza is presently on aam Aadmi party. He is not a BJP MLA as claimed by Prashant Bhushan. Yatin Oza was a BJP MLA from 1995 to 2001 from Sabarmati. He left the BJP in 2001 and joined Congress. He contested against Narendra Modi from Maninagar from Congress and lost the polls. He joined AAP in 2016. As Oza was talking about bypolls in 2001 in the video, therefore it can be said that he made the comments after leaving BJP.

Netizens from Gujarat have demanded action against the so-called activist for spreading fake news as Yatin Oza, in this video, says that the BJP orchestrates Hindu-Muslim riots to win the elections.

Chhayank Mehta, a Twitter user from Gujarat tweeted, “Dear Gujarat police, Kindly take action against this Prashant Bhushan who is spreading fake news. The video is of Yatin Oza who had joined Aam Aadmi Party and he is not even MLA. This video is aimed to create disturbance in Gujarat. Kindly take strict action against Prashant Bhushan.”

The Gujarat assembly completes its term in December 2022 and the assembly election in the state will soon be declared. The video shared by lawyer Prashant Bhushan is thus looked at as sensitive content against this backdrop.

The Uttar Pradesh Police have arrested a person named Naushad for attempting to rape and brutally murder a minor Hindu girl in Tadi Bada village of Ballia district in the state. The 13-year-old girl, the daughter of Ravindra Pandey, had gone to a fair organized in the village and was taken away by the accused. He tried to rape her and later murdered her. Naushad was arrested when the victim girl was in the hospital, and now murder charges have been slapped against him.

According to the reports, the incident is said to have happened on October 14 when the victim girl had gone to a fair organized in the village. She was accompanied by one of her friends named Sapna. While they were returning from the fair, Naushad approached the victim and offered to drop her safely at home. However, he took her 5 km away from her house in the opposite direction and tried to rape her.

On being unsuccessful, he abused the victim and choked her throat. He also used sharp blades to slit her hand and also tried to separate her legs from her body. The girl was then thrown away on the nearby farm and was discovered only the next morning. Some of the women from the village found the girl lying on the roadside the next morning and called the villagers. The girl was immediately shifted to the nearby hospital where she died on October 21.

Ravindra Pandey, the father of the victim girl said that the accused was well known to his family and that he was like their family member. “He used to come to our house frequently as he stayed only around 10 meters away from home. We had friendly relations with him and he was free to roam around in our home. I am still clueless why he did such a brutal thing to my daughter”, he said.

He added that on October 14, when the incident happened, he was worried as his daughter had not returned home from the fair. When the girl had not arrived home, he called call his daughter’s friend Sapna to know where his daughter was. But Sapna said that she already arrived home an hour ago and her friend was not with her. Later the villagers said that they saw the girl with Naushad.

After knowing this, the girl’s father called Naushad to know about the victim, but he lied saying that he didn’t take the girl with him. Later he even visited the girl’s house to ask if she has returned and went away after being told that she has not. The father of the girl then began searching for his daughter in the village. However, she was found only the next morning.

After the girl was found by some women from the village, her father was immediately informed, and she was rushed to a hospital. As she was last seen with Naushad, her father Ravindra Pandey lodged a complaint against him.

The local police immediately launched an investigation into the case and arrested Naushad for brutally murdering the 13-year-old girl. The accused was also shot in his leg by the police after he shot at the police team with a country-made gun and tried to escape. However, he was nabbed by police and later he confessed to having committed the crime and said that he first tried to rape the victim and on being unsuccessful, he thrashed her. He said that he pressed the girl’s mouth with a handkerchief and then cut veins in her wrist.

Later the girl was shifted to Varanasi, but she died during treatment on 21st October. Following that, police added additional murder charges against Naushad. The girl was cremated at Harichandra Ghat in Varanasi at the insistence of the police, while villagers had demanded to bring her to the village. Doctors have collected samples of her nails and other organs of the body to find evidence of the attack.

The family members of the deceased have demanded strict action against the accused and have said that the accused should be severely tortured before his death punishment. The video of the incident went viral over social media in which the father of the victim could be heard saying that the local police and especially the SP of the district helped him in this case. He said that the victim was not even able to open her eyes properly and that her body was completely bandaged. “She was not able to speak anything after the incident. She only could be seen fearing death”, he added. The locals are also demanding that Naushad’s house should be demolished.
