Endurance and courage: Tribal children from Chandrapur district scale Mt Everest in a unique initiative by Maharashtra govt

Five students from Chandrapur tribal ashram school did something, which is an ultimate example of endurance, hard work, patience and above all courage, for everyone to wake up and take notice. These kids from- what the people call as deprived and marginalized strata- has once again shown the world what stories of success are built upon.

‘Mission Shaurya’ as its name suggests, is a story of a dream which people from the tribal area of Chandrapur District had dared to dream and fulfil it. It was a joint initiative of the state Tribal department and Chandrapur Collectorate to scale Everest. The idea behind it was to mainstream the tribal student and give them exposure. In its first year in 2018, it attracted a lot of curiosity and skepticism alike from across not only India but from the entire world. Out of the hundreds that applied five students ultimately achieved the feat including a girl student and scaled the Everest to the amazement of the world and paved the way for many to follow.

This year too, 11 students were selected and trained for this mission’s second chapter. The training process was extensive and needed lot acclimatization. The basic training was given by the Gyan Bharati skill development centre at Wardha.

The students were given foundation course which included foundations of adventure, preparedness and teamwork after that they were tested for advanced winter training sessions in Leh and Ladakh. That was followed by the basic mountaineering course in Hyderabad and later in Darjeeling. They were trained to scale peaks as high as 17000 feet so that they can adapt to climate at Everest’s height of 29,000 feet.

They were trained to store water, edibles and techniques of controlling the respiration. In Leh, they were taught to walk in the freeze lakes and survive at a temperature as low as minus 35-degree centigrade. During this training process, students were taught to keep mental situation, diet, nutritious values and other necessary requirements under their control. 11 students out of those who performed well during all these trainings were selected for ‘Mission Shaurya- 2019’ where they have to climb Mount Everest.

Mission Shaurya

Manisha Dhurve, the tribal girl from Dewada Ashram School from Chandrapur district, who had achieved this feat and being the only girl from the team to achieve success, describes this as the biggest thing of her life. “I can dream of even bigger things in life now…and I don’t fear that I should not be dreaming these things as I now know that nothing is impossible,” said the proud girl.

For Sudhir Mungantiwar, Cabinet Minister for Finance and planning and Forests, this is a cause which is close to its heart, making sure that the achievers are taken care of. The achievers were given cash prizes to the tune of Rs 25 lakhs and kids who couldn’t make it were also lauded for their stupendous efforts and were awarded Rs 10 lakhs. They were also given jobs in the state police force.

The mission now has taken a life of its own for others to follow and dream the ultimate dream.

UN faces severe cash crunch: Austerity measures in places, restricts heating and AC, stops hiring

0

The United Nations is facing a severe cash crunch as most of the member nations have been defaulting on their payments. As UN chief Antonio Guterres had informed recently that the UN may run out of money by the end of this month, the organisation has been taking serious cost-cutting measures.

In the UN headquarters at New York City, after-hour meetings and late-night receptions have been stopped. The building restricts Air Conditioning after 6 pm till the 8 am in the next morning. Heating and drinking water outlets are limited too.

As per reports, the organisation is preparing for more cost-cutting measures, like cancelling the freebies like water bottles and such at conferences, and additional services like translations and prompt availability of documents are expected to be limited and delayed too.

Some reports have stated that the UN does not even have the money to pay staff salaries for the month of November

The 39-storied secretariat building has shut down many of its water fountains and escalators. As per reports, UN chief Guterres has sent a letter to all department heads, offices and special political missions informing them of the problem’s severity.

In his letter, Guterres reportedly mentioned that beginning October 14, austerity measures will be implemented and it will affect working conditions and operations until further notice. The organisation has also stopped new hirings.

The UN’s cash crisis is mainly due to member nations not paying their annual assessment bills.

“Member states have paid only 70% of the total amount needed for our regular budget operations in 2019. This translates into a cash shortage of $230 million at the end of September. We run the risk of depleting our backup liquidity reserves by the end of the month,” Guterres had written earlier.

India is one of the only 35 of the 193 member nations that have paid all their dues to the UN. Apart from this, the UN also owes India a staggering 38 million USD for contributing peacekeeping forces. India’s ambassador to the UN, Syed Akbaruddin had shared an image where the names of the nations that have made full payments to the UN was displayed at the headquarters.

The US owes the highest amount to the UN. According to UN officials, the United States owed $381 million to the regular budget as of January 1 and $776 million to the peacekeeping budget.

However, US President Donald Trump has stated recently that the US is being billed unfairly and the UN should make all the nations pay, not just the US.

Sandeep Dikshit writes letter to PC Chacko blaming him for Sheila Dikshit’s sudden demise, Sonia Gandhi refers matter to Congress panel

Three months ago, the longest-serving chief minister of Delhi and a veteran Congress leader Sheila Dikshit had passed away at the age of 81. She was reportedly ill for the last several days. Reasons for her demise has been stated as prolong illness and old age. Now, her son and Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit has written a letter to Delhi Congress in-charge PC Chacko blaming him for the sudden demise of Sheila Dikshit. Sandeep has also demanded an apology from Chacko, reports said.

Chacko and Sandeep Dikshit have both refused to reveal the full details of the purported letter, however, media reports claim that sources within the Congress party have said that Dikshit was extremely distressed about the way she was treated and the organisational changes being made in the state unit of Congress.

Sonia Gandhi, the current President of the Congress party has reportedly referred the matter to the Congress disciplinary panel for further action and probe.

At a hurried press conference, several Congress leaders demanded that PC Chacko be sacked from his position and from the party since he had leaked the contents of the private letter written to him by Sandeep Dikshit.

PC Chacko has, however, confirmed that he has received such a letter from Sandeep Dikshit. He said he had received the said letter and forwarded it to Sonia Gandhi. He alleged that Sandeep Dikshit has made some ‘wild and nasty’ allegations against him.

According to reports, Sheila Dikshit herself had written a detailed letter to Sonia Gandhi just a day before her death. According to media reports, she had claimed that she was being constantly harassed by PC Chacko and all her political decisions were being overturned by him.

Desperate times? Sonia asks West Bengal Congress to campaign with the Left, laments BJP’s rise in the state

Sonia Gandhi has asked the leaders of West Bengal Congress to plan joint movements with the Left front, to challenge the ruling TMC and emerging BJP in the state. As per reports, WB Congress leader Abdul Mannan had met Congress chief Sonia Gandhi twice on Thursday to discuss the political situation in the state.

Abdul Mannan is the leader of the opposition in the West Bengal assembly.

Following the meeting, Mannan has informed media that Sonia has given her nod for a Congress-Left Front alliance in West Bengal considering that the party is losing ground with the ruling TMC and the emerging BJP.

“We discussed the political situation with Sonia Gandhiji and she has asked us to conduct joint movements with the Left Front in order to build a public opinion about the proposed LF-Congress alliance in the state. She asked us to conduct joint movements with Left Front against Trinamool Congress and BJP in the state,” said WB Congress leader Abdul Mannan.

Mannan also reportedly informed that Sonia was of the opinion that had the Congress-Left alliance been intact after the 2016 assembly elections, the political situation in Bengal could have been different and BJP would have never gained ground in the state.

It is notable here that Sonia had reportedly given her nod for the Congress-Left alliance in the upcoming assembly by-elections in WB back in August. There will be by-elections for 3 assembly seats in Kaliaganj, Kharagpur and Karimganj seats located in 3 different districts in the state soon.

While the Congress will field candidates in the Kaliaganj and Kharagpur seats, the CPI(M) will contest the Karimpur seat.

In the 2016 assembly elections, Congress and the CPI(M) had come together but had managed only 44 and 26 seats respectively. The TMC had a clear majority with 211 seats out of the 294.

In the recent Lok Sabha elections, both Congress and CPI(M) had faced a near route. While Congress managed to win 2 seats and lost deposits in 38 seats, the CPI(M) had failed to win even a single seat and had lost deposits in all the 39 seats where it had contested.

Watch: PM Narendra Modi goes ‘plogging’ in Mamallapuram beach and picks up trash, promotes fitness and Swachh Bharat

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is holding an informal summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Mamallapuram, Tamil Nadu. After a hectic first day where PM Modi and President Jinping discussed several issues ranging from trade to terrorism, Prime Minister Modi took a leisurely walk on a Mamallapuram beach and picked up trash that was strewn on the picturesque locale. “Plogging at a beach in Mamallapuram this morning. It lasted for over 30 minutes”, PM Modi tweeted.

Prime Minister Modi, dressed in a casual T-Shirt and track pants took a walk on a beach of Mamallapuram. Mamallapuram is a village in the Kumbakonam taluk of Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu, India where the informal summit between PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping is taking place.

While on a casual walk, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was seen picking up the garbage strewn on the beach with his hands. The garbage was then collected in a trash bag and handed over to a hotel staffer called Jeyaraj. The beach appears to be the private beach of the resort PM Modi is staying in during the informal summit.

PM Modi took to Twitter to upload a 3-minute clip where he urged citizens to keep public places clean and tidy and also, remain fit and healthy.

‘Plogging’ is a Swedish fitness trend that encourages people to pick up litter while on a run or a walk. This not only encourages people to stay healthy and fit but also ensure that their surrounding is clean.

‘Swachh Bharat’ has been a pet project of the Prime Minister ever since he came to power in 2014 and his government, especially Minister Rajyavrdhan Singh Rathore also launched the #HumFitTohIndiaFit movement. ‘Plogging’ seems to be Prime Minister Modi’s way to encourage both essential movements at the same time.

Till March 2019, 93% of rural India had access to toilets under PM Modi’s Swachh Bharat movement and a total of 9 crore toilets were built by the Modi government.

“The survey was conducted between November 2018 and February 2019 and covered 92,040 households in 6,136 villages across States and Union Territories of India,” the drinking water and sanitation ministry said.

The findings of the survey were presented on Tuesday to an expert working group developed for the oversight of NARSS, comprising representatives from organisations including the World Bank, UNICEF, Water Aid, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, India Sanitation Coalition, Sulabh International, Knowledge Links, Niti Aayog, ministry of statistics and program implementation.

Accident involving Unnao victim was not planned, finds CBI: Drops murder charges against suspended BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar

0

After the extensive probe into the case which was court-monitored by the Supreme Court (SC), the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has found that the accident involving the Unnao rape victim was not planned by suspended BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar but was a result of rash and negligent driving by the truck driver. As a result of this probe, while the CBI has filed a chargesheet in the case, they have dropped murder and attempt to murder charges against Kuldeep Sengar.

The truck driver who drove rashly and cause the Unnao rape victim to be severely injured and her two aunts to lose their life has been charged by the CBI under Section 304 A (causing death due to negligent or rash driving), 338 (causing grievous hurt), and section 279 (rash driving).

Reportedly, the CBI probed the case extensively. They ran simulation tests from all angles to probe how the accident happened and even probed call records to establish a link between the driver, Arun Kumar Pal and Kuldeep Sengar, however, no connection between the two was found.

Kuldeep Sengar, who was suspended from BJP has been charged under several sections of the IPC in cases unrelated to the accident.

Interestingly, it was reported earlier that the truck that had hit the Unnao rape victim and caused grievous hurt apart from killing her two aunts, belonged to a Samajwadi Party leader, Nandkishor Pal aka Nandu Pal. Lal. Lal is a Samajwadi Party leader from Fatehpur district and his wife Ramashree Pal is also a Samajwadi Party leader.

The rumours of a conspiracy against the Unnao victim gained even more ground after it was found that the number plate of the truck was blackened. Samajwadi Party leader had claimed that the number plate was blackened out to evade the financiers. Pal has three other brothers, Devendra Kishore Pal, Munna Pal and Dilip Pal, who own 27 trucks amongst themselves. Nandu Pal has reportedly informed that the truck which was involved in the accident was in the name of Devendra Kishore Pal. The truck was returning from Rae Bareli to Fatehpur. However, though it was claimed that the number plate was blackened to evade financiers, the Finance Company had denied this version and said that no payments were due on the truck at all.

Kuldeep Sengar was a BJP MLA from Bangarmau. He had joined BJP in 2017 after a ten-year stint with Samajwadi Party. He had first become an MLA from Unnao Sadar on a BSP ticket. He had joined SP later and had won the Bangarmau seat in 2007 and Bhagwant Nagar seat in 2012. He had joined BJP in 2017 and won the Bangermau seat.

The accident had taken placed in June this year. The vehicle had collided with a truck going in the opposite direction towards Lalganj in UP. The truck had reportedly hit the vehicle near the turning at Sultanpur Kheda village in the Lalganj-Raebareli highway. The victim, her lawyer and others were reportedly travelling to Raebareli to meet the victim’s uncle who is imprisoned in Raebereli jail in charges for assaulting Kuldeep Sengar’s brother Atul Sengar.

Punjab: Ailing Sikh man made to read Kalma then thrashed by Muslim neighbour for resisting forced conversion to Islam

0

A case of forcible religious conversion to Islam in Patiala has come to fore. An ailing man belonging to the Sikh community was coerced into converting into Islam. When he resisted the proselytising attempts imposed upon him, he was mercilessly thrashed for refusing to embrace Islam.

After remaining silent for 3 days after he was assaulted, the victim, Kirandeep Singh, overcame his fear and lodged a complaint with the police. According to Singh, on October 6, he was first forcibly made to read Kalma and Quran in Hira Bagh, Patiala and was later asked to become a Muslim. However, when he did not comply with the demands of his assaulters, he was brutally beaten up by them. Victim Kirandeep Singh said that he works as a security guard in a car showroom in Hira Bagh.

After completing its investigation, the police has booked eight people. The accused Anwar Khan and his seven unknown accomplices are still absconding. In the complaint registered with the police, Singh said that when he had contracted an illness last year, his neighbour Anwar said that someone has done black magic on him. To resolve this, Anwar had taken him to several Muslim religious places. In these places, he was taught to read Kalma. During this time, Singh’s health started improving.

After that, the prime accused Anwar assured him that he would get well completely after reading the Quran. Kirandeep said that he followed everything that was asked of him by Anwar. After this, Anwar started pressurising him for conversion to Islam but Singh refused to shun Sikhism. Anwar said that he has already become half Muslim, so he should embrace Islam completely, but Kirandeep didn’t agree. He was subsequently pounded by Anwar’s men for his defiance to not accept Islam.

Raj Thackeray concedes defeat, asks voters to make MNS a ‘strong and powerful’ opposition

With Assembly elections in Maharashtra just days away, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena(MNS) chief Raj Thackeray appeared to have conceded his defeat as he exhorted voters to make MNS a ‘strong and powerful’ opposition. In a candid admission, Thackeray admitted that his party is not in the position of “forming the government” in the state and would be content with empowering the opposition.

Thackeray voiced his realisation while addressing a rally in Mumbai’s Bandra last evening. Requesting the voters to elect MNS candidates, Raj said, “I urge you to support and elect all my candidates, to help us become a powerful opposition party. All my candidates have a burning fire in their bellies to do something for you, they will hold the government accountable and ensure that the promises made by them are fulfilled. The ruling party MLAs have a knack of remaining silent and turn a blind eye to the raging public issues.”

In his first rally after being questioned by ED in a money laundering case, Raj Thackeray said, “what this State needs today is nothing but a capable and strong Opposition. This might be the first time that a political leader is making this demand. But I am appealing to you to make me the Leader of Opposition. Today it is only the Opposition that can raise issues and give justice to people.”

He added, “I know my limitations; I know what I can do and what I can’t. When it is within my capacity, and I am sure that the day will come soon, I will seek power from you all. But today, the State needs a strong Opposition who can slam the rulers.”

After stating that MNS has slim chances of being a part of the government in Maharashtra, the MNS chief listed out the virtues of having a strong opposition in a democracy. Reiterating that a strong opposition is imperative for fostering democracy, Raj said that it is the remit of the opposition legislators to speak up for the masses and help deliver justice to the people.

It is noteworthy to mention that a few days before realising that his party is facing long odds in coming to power in Maharashtra, Raj Thackeray had imperiously dished out a threat of boycotting the Maharashtra Assembly elections in opposition to the decision of using EVMs in the elections.

Mumbai: Indian Railways deploy RPF personnel to dissuade people from defecating and throwing garbage on railway tracks

0

In its efforts to dissuade people from defecating and throwing garbage along the railway tracks at Mahim station, the Western Railway (WR) has deployed 20 RPF men near the Mahim slum.

Railway authorities are also planning to install CCTV cameras along the tracks, whose direct feed will be transmitted to the Mahim station master’s room. Other measures to fight this menace would be improving lighting on the stretch and forming a team of ticket collectors (TCs) to collect fine from the offenders. The WR has levied a fine of Rs 500 under Section 198 of Railway Act, 1989 on those caught dumping garbage along the railway tracks.

The railway authorities launched the drive a few days after a local train derailed on October 2 near Mahim station. The derailment had led to the suspension of Harbour line services for a few hours.

On October 2, four wheels of a Bandra bound suburban local train derailed between Kings Circle and Mahim stations. The committee which had been formed to investigate the reasons behind this derailment said, prima facie, the accumulated garbage and muck is to be blamed for insufficient cleaning and maintenance of rail assets at Mahim.

Open defecation is an unceasing problem at a number of suburban stations in Mumbai. In fact, railway tracks at most of these suburban stations, including Mahim are plagued by open defecation.

“The WR has launched this drive against open defecation at Mahim station. If people are found defecating along the railway tracks, they are fined by the ticket collectors (TCs) deployed there,” the official said. “For the first time, a large team of TCs has been formed to collect fine from those found defecating along the tracks. So far, more than Rs 70,000 have been collected from the offenders,” he added.

Another official added that open defecation can weaken and damage the tracks. “Open defecation not only reduces the lifespan of the tracks by 50 per cent but also discourages the railway staff to carry out repair work there,” he said.

No locus standi: Appeal by intellectuals to surrender Ayodhya land as ‘goodwill gesture’ categorically rejected by Muslim Law Board

0

The Muslim Law Board has rejected the appeal made by the ‘intellectuals’ regarding the long-continued Ram Janmbhoomi case. An appeal that was made by the intellectuals to surrender the Ayodhya land as a ‘goodwill gesture’ cut no ice with the Muslim Law Board. The Muslim Law Board made it amply clear that it is in no mood to relinquish the claim on the Ayodhya land.

With no mutually acceptable solution in sight, some prominent Muslim intellectuals, including former vice-chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University Lt. General (retd) Zamiruddin Shah and former chief secretary of UP Anees Ansari urges the Muslim side offer to surrender their claim on the disputed land. However, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) categorically rejected their request.

The suggestion to voluntarily hand over the disputed land to Hindus was proffered by the group called ‘Indian Muslims for Peace’ claiming that the out-of-court settlement in the protracted Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi dispute was the only solution that could be agreeable to both Hindus and Muslims.

The national executive meet of the AIMPLB is scheduled to happen on October 12 in Lucknow in which the board’s official stand on the possibility to surrender the claim on the 2.77 acres disputed land in Ayodhya is to be deliberated. However, even before the important meeting before the hearings get over in Supreme court, the board’s member and its spokesperson Zafaryab Jilani has asserted that they are not predisposed towards giving up the claim on the land.

Read: Difficult to rebut the faith of Hindus regarding Ram Janmabhoomi: SC to Muslim side lawyers during Ayodhya hearing.

Jilani said, “Board remains unmoved by any such demands. Those giving suggestions of the surrender of claim have no locus standi in the case. The talks between the two sides have failed to break the imbroglio and we are assured of the arguments placed before the honourable Supreme Court and look forward to the much-awaited verdict.”

The Muslim board has maintained its stance as per the resolution was taken in its previous meeting. The board in its previous meetings had already passed a resolution that’s since the mediation talks have not fructified as per expectations, they would accept the apex court’s verdict in the case.

The Supreme Court had earlier asserted that it would be difficult to question the faith of Hindus with regard to Ayodhya as the birthplace of Lord Ram as even some Muslim witnesses have termed it as sacred for the Hindus as Mecca is for them.
