Extortion charges: Woman who had accused Swami Chinmayanand of rape sent to 14-day judicial custody

0

The law student who had accused Swami Chinmayanand of rape has been arrested and sent to 14-day judicial custody by a local court in Shahjahanpur. As per reports, she was arrested earlier today under charges of trying to extort money from Chinmayanand.

Uttar Pradesh DGP OP Singh informed the media today that the woman was arrested after questioning by the SIT.

The woman was then produced before a local court which sent her to 14-day judicial custody. As per the latest news, she has been brought to the District jail by the police.

The law student from Shahjahanpur, who has accused former Union Minister Swami Chinmayanand of raping and physically exploiting her, was on September 20 (Friday) charged with extortion in a case filed by Chinmayanand. Chinmayanand has already been arrested under charges of rape and physical exploitation. The woman and her associates had allegedly tried to extort Rs 5 crores from Chinmayanand.

The SIT had also taken the remand of the two friends of the woman, Sachin and Vikram under the extortion charges. Another accused in the extortion case, Sanjay Singh, who had allegedly sent a WhatsApp message demanding the ransom of Rs 5 crore from Chinmayanand was also arrested on September 20.

Yesterday, the woman’s lawyer had rubbished the media reports of her arrest. He has stated that they have filed an anticipatory bail application in the court that has been accepted and is due for hearing on September 26.

The woman, a law student, had accused former Union minister and BJP leader Swami Chinamayanand of raping and sexually harassing her. After a huge controversy, Swami Chinmayanand had admitted almost every allegation against him and had stated that he is ashamed.

As India aspires to develop, the World strengthens its Climate Change narrative

Since Greta Thunberg’s speech at the UN yesterday, the world (of social media) has exploded. The 30-year-old debate on Climate Change has resurfaced and how! Around the turn of this century, a film ‘Inconvenient Truth’ by Al Gore took the world by storm. I still remember an enduring image from the film, when Al Gore, an extremely prolific speaker, actually climbs the ladder on the stage to show how the temperatures have risen over the past few centuries. It had had a huge impact on me. The doomsday seemed to be near and we, as a human race, seemed to be walking right into its trap.

This was around the same time that I had recently completed my Masters in Environmental Planning in the US and thus professionally accepted that I would be a part of the scene that will help create solutions, come up with innovation and planning and management techniques to curb the threat of Climate Change.

Thankfully, in due course of professional and academic pursuits, I worked with experts and mentors who guided me, no, coaxed me to look at the Science of Climate Change and also the dynamics of its politics in greater detail. So the impact of the ‘Inconvenient Truth’ wore off quickly to arrive at a conclusion that the narrative that’s being built around Climate Change needs greater scrutiny than what it is getting. This started as a mere thought at the time but reinforced itself as the world bypassed doomsday predictions of Climate Change easily. There had to be something more if the science is not supporting the narrative. This is exactly what professionals should do, right? They wait for conclusive tests and trials before pronouncing a malady. But, the world was not in a position to listen. The frenzy around Climate Change just grew and grew until it became the ultimate truth. Every child, since kindergarten started to parrot the words. And we, professionals, were sometimes left floundering. For want of conclusive science, I particularly could not diagnose nor prescribe the narrative of Climate Change, but laypersons around me swore by it.

Even the early readings about the North versus South divide on a Climate Change give an insight into the politics around this issue. And of particular interest to me was the unfairness of it all to India and other developing countries. In fact, Greta’s outburst yesterday, once again, brought back memories of those early readings in greater force, as it did for so many people around the world and thus the world (of intellectuals on social media) exploded into primarily two parts – the Climate Change believers and the Climate Change skeptics.

In a nutshell, the entire Climate Change narrative can be summed up to say that we, as a world, have reached a level of CO2 emissions where we cannot/should not add more. While this is the premise of the narrative, skeptics will argue that this is so far unproven scientifically. So developed countries started sending out messages through international conferences and educational programs that ‘developing’ countries should not add to this pool of global CO2 by wanting to develop like they themselves did in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The argument most commonly was and even today is, “Don’t make the same mistakes”, of course, never ever accepting that they made a mistake. So as not seem too unfair, given that China and India are two powerful nations, the narrative revolved vaguely around a concept of Carbon Credits, a monetisation of pollution. But that failed to take off as well because science and economics did not support it adequately. There are many allegations about vested interests and means for accessing Green Funds by Climate Change influencers etc, but I will not delve into those since these are unproven as well.

In the meanwhile, in a typical Chinese fashion, China refused anything and everything the world had to say on Climate Change and developed at a pace that’s unprecedented in the history of the world. Within a single generation, the country brought poverty under control by giving her citizens adequate infrastructure to run the economy for its billion-plus people. Done. No one dared ask questions.

Now as India reared her head ever so slightly under PM Modi’s leadership since 2014, showing signs of development, the Climate Change narrative gained momentum. The developed world, once again, seemed to ask, “why are you developing?”. We need to keep our CO2 emissions low, you know. And then the same parroting of platitudes – we are not anti-development, but what about sustainability? I keep asking this question – can anyone in this world show how any nation can develop her infrastructure without increasing her carbon footprint? It’s inevitable and the only recourse is to optimise!

A teenager’s monologue and emotional appeal yesterday brought into my mind a typical teenager in my country. And this is not a teenager in an Indian city in an upper-middle-class household. A typical teenager in India is still in a small town somewhere, just larger than a village, who is struggling to reach school for want of a better road or suffers an iron deficiency for want of modern healthcare. A typical teenager in India is the one who aspires to be educated and find a good job in a city, even travel abroad, if lucky, and improve her parents’ lives. My first thought was, will and should an emotional appeal from an entitled European teenager, with a carbon footprint around 9 (German average) be allowed to set a development narrative for a teenager whose carbon footprint is 1 (Indian average)?

Earlier, I was confident that science will catch up with the unfairness of global politics and we, as a humanity, will correct our course. But since this has not happened so far, I am further worried about the damage this Climate Change discourse will do to India. And the worst part is, the world from outside India never tells us what to do. It does it through the medium of foreign-educated intellectuals (like me) and thus successfully thwarts development from within.

Having said this, as a professional in the field of Environment, there is no denying the fact that we are polluting and degrading our natural resources. Whether this leads to Climate Change or not may be up for debate, but the fact remains that we are rapidly dirtying our air, our water and depleting precious natural resources. And hence the focus of my professional journey has been to find local solutions – innovations, planning and management techniques to reduce pollution of our activities, to optimise the use of natural resources. Constantly, find ways to optimise rather than say NO. Instead of looking at every activity in the shadow of the Climate Change narrative, we have chosen to provide solutions so that India can continue her quest of offering liveability, access to basic services such as electrification, water supply, housing, healthcare, mobility etc, but we do so in a responsible manner.

And hence, I have often circumvented discussions on Climate Change, at the peril of losing credibility, just as a doctor would look at unproven science, even if there is a strong narrative around it amongst the patients. We have tried to look at this objectively, much to the chagrin of Climate Change enthusiasts. This issue is similar to the quandary we feel when the scientific community makes its constant flip around eating an egg. First, an egg was great then it was bad for cholesterol and once again now it’s apparently good for the heart. Just like all this while, we continued to eat it in moderation, so should we continue India’s quest for a liveable country that offers basic services to all her population.

We should be mindful of local pollution that will threaten peoples’ well being but also allow for a broader judgment of overall economic and social well being, through mitigation, management and remediation solutions. We should accept the fact that India’s addition of infrastructure to meet the requirements of her people will add to CO2 emissions. We should just try to ensure that these are optimum, offsets made through compensatory actions. Any narrative, emotional or otherwise, and especially, an unproven one, is set to hinder India’s quest for economic growth, should not come in India’s way.

Prime Minister Modi dedicates Global Goalkeeper Award conferred by Gates Foundation to citizens of India

0

Prime Minister Modi was awarded the Global Goalkeeper Award last night for the ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in New York. The award was presented by tech giant Microsoft founder Bill Gates. “I dedicate the award to the 130 crore people of India and the collective endeavours of our nation to improve cleanliness,” he said in a tweet.

“In last five years a record more than 11 crore toilets were constructed. If this mission has benefited someone the most it is the poor of this country and the women,” PM Modi said while receiving the award. “I have been told that in a report of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation it was found that in India due to better rural sanitation, heart problems in children have decreased, and there has been improvement in Body Mass Index of women,” PM Modi said.

PM Modi asserted that India is now close to achieving the sanitation target. However, India is working steadfastly on other missions as well, like the Fit India Movement which was recently launched to promote health and fitness.

Every year, the Gates Foundation confers ‘Goalkeepers Award’ to individuals who have taken action to bring global goals to live and help achieve them. In 2019, the awards honoured those individuals who have been working towards tackling issues which contribute toward global inequity.

Islamabad: Pakistan’s aviation minister stopped by Immigration after he forgets passport, tries to present wife’s passport as his own

Aviation minister of Pakistan Ghulam Sarwar Khan was stopped by the immigration officials at the Islamabad international airport on Monday for not carrying his passport. As per reports in the Pakistani media, the minister was on his way to Turkey.

The Pakistan aviation minister, when he realised that he does not have his passport, reportedly tried to present his wife’s passport to the immigration authorities at the Islamabad airport. However, his security officials reportedly rushed away and brought his passport from home in time for him to board the flight.

The aviation minister himself forgetting his passport and trying to gain access through immigration by trying to present his wife’s passport has led to amusing reactions on social media.

NCP chief Sharad Pawar says he will be pleased to go to jail as he has ‘never had this experience’ after ED files case against him

NCP (Nationalist Congress Party) chief Sharad Pawar wants to go to jail as he has ‘never had this experience before’.

After the Enforcement Directorate (ED) named him and his nephew Ajit Pawar in a money laundering case, Pawar said that he has no problem if he has to go to jail. Making light of the situation as if jail term is a vacation, Sharad Pawar added, “I will be pleased as I have never had this experience. If someone plans to send me to jail, I will welcome it.”

On Tuesday, the ED filed a case against Pawar, his nephew and former Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra Ajit Pawar and others in connection with Rs 25,000 crore Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank (MSCB) scam. A case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) has been registered against the accused.

Last month, the Mumbai Police had filed a case against Ajit Pawar and 70 others in the bank scam.  Scrutiny carried out by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), and a charge sheet filed by a quasi-judicial enquiry commission under the Maharashtra Cooperative Societies (MCS) Act held Pawar and other accused, including several directors of the bank responsible for the loss. It stated that because of their decisions, actions and inactions, massive losses were incurred to the bank.

An audit report by NABARD revealed flagrant violations of several banking laws and RBI norms by the accused in the allotment of loans to sugar factories and spinning mills and the ensuing default on repayment and recovery of such loans. During that time, Ajit Pawar was the director of the bank.

JeM attack threats: Reports of possible terror attacks being planned against PM Modi, NSA Doval and Air Force bases in J and K

0

Terrorist organisation Jaish-e-Mohammad is readying a special squad of attackers to target PM Modi and NSA Ajit Doval, a Times of India report has said citing sources within the intelligence agencies. As per the report, a major in the Pakistani army, associated with ISI, is collaborating with the terrorists for the ‘sensational attacks’.

The input regarding this plan was conveyed to Indian intelligence agencies by a foreign intelligence unit, which had intercepted a communication between Pakistan-based JeM terrorist Shamsher Wani and his handler. The TOI report had stated that they have accessed the input, which was a handwritten note passed to Wani. The communication spoke about a large scale attack in September.

Acting on the input and related reports, the Indian authorities have issued an alert to the police forces in 30 different ‘sensitive’ cities, including Jammu, Amritsar, Gandhinagar, Pathankot, Jaipur, Kanpur and Lucknow.

As per latest reports, intelligence agencies have also issued an alert about a module of 8-10 terrorists planning to target key air force bases in suicide attacks. Following the threat, air force bases at Srinagar, Hindon, Pathankot, Jammu and Awantipora have been put on an ‘orange level’ alert.

Security agencies have also reportedly carried out a review of the security cover provided to NSA Ajit Doval. Doval, who is under Z-plus security cover has been under constant threat, especially after his highly publicised role in carrying out the cross-border surgical strike post-Uri attacks and the airstrikes in Balakot that was carried out by the Indian air force in February this year.

The report states that JeM has been rattled after the Balakot strikes and the relentless elimination of its terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir by the Indian security forces. After the massive losses and humiliation it suffered when Indian fighter jets bombed its premises at Jabba top near Balakot earlier this year, the terror organisation has been seething in anger and looking for an opportunity to attack India.

Following India’s move abrogate Article 370 and make Jammu and Kashmir an Union Territory has further pushed terrorist organisations into a corner and they have been looking for a ‘dramatic retaliation’ to assert their power by targeting high-value leaders, according to the report.

It has been reported earlier that JeM and other terrorist organisations have been building up presence along the LoC. On September 12-13, a major infiltration bid by JeM cadre, assisted by Pakistan army’s BAT, was foiled by Indian security forces. Recently, COAS Bipin Rawat had informed media that the Balakot terror camps have been reactivated by Pakistan.

Pakistan PM Imran Khan quotes Congress again as he desperately clutches to straws to rake up Kashmir issue

A desperate Imran Khan again turned towards India’s opposition party, Congress as hope to draw the international community’s attention toward the Kashmir issue following the abrogation of Article 370. Launching a renewed attack on India, Pakistan Prime Minister Khan said that the curfew in Kashmir is still not lifted. “Even the Congress party in India has commented that poor people have been shut inside for 50 days. No one knows what’s happening with the political prisoners,” Khan said on the sidelines of the UNGA session in New York.

This is not the first time Pakistan has tried to piggyback on Congress while trying to make a point on Kashmir. Earlier this month, Pakistan’s anti-India dossier to the UNHRC featured former Congress President Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders. The dossier quoted remarks made by Rahul Gandhi in the aftermath of India’s decision to abrogate Article 370 for Jammu and Kashmir where he had taken to Twitter to castigate Jammu and Kashmir authorities and had cast doubts on the Indian government.

Rahul Gandhi had said that it had been 20 days since people of Jammu & Kashmir “had their freedom and civil liberties curtailed”. He could be heard speaking to the security forces that he would like to go to ‘any area which is peaceful’ and had concluded his video by saying that “it is very clear that things are not normal in Jammu & Kashmir.” The former Congress President Rahul Gandhi had also ‘noted’ that “people dying” in Jammu & Kashmir, in light of events “going very wrong here”.

Prior to this too, Pakistan had written to the UN accusing India of carrying out human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir and had used this statement by Rahul Gandhi and other leftist leaders to further its narrative.

Earlier this year following the Pulwama terror attack where a Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist killed 40 CRPF jawans by ramming an explosive-laden car in the convoy, Pakistan had used the stand taken by Rahul Gandhi and his political cronies to further its agenda against India. Pakistani analysts and strategists in their media debates had even named the Congress as a ‘sympathiser’ of Pakistan. Recently, Imran Khan had even copied Rahul Gandhi’s favourite lines against RSS and the BJP and had stated that the RSS and PM Modi are planning a Nazi-like imposition of Hindutva ideology in India.

However, yesterday, Khan expressed his ‘disappointment’ at being repeatedly snubbed by the international community and failing to gather any support for Pakistan on the Kashmir issue. “I am disappointed by the international community. If eight billion Europeans or Jews or even eight Americans were put under siege, would the reaction have been the same? You think Kashmiris will quietly accept that Kashmir has been annexed?” he told the mediapersons on the sidelines of UNGA.

Pakistan has vowed to rake up the abrogation of Article 370 issue when Pakistan PM Khan addresses the UNGA session this Friday.

US President Donald Trump calls PM Modi ‘Father of India’, says Modi will “take care” of radical Islamic terrorism

United States President Donald Trump last night called Prime Minister Modi ‘Father of India’ and said that he will take care of radical Islamic terrorism.

On answering a media query on the ‘Howdy, Modi!’ event which President Trump had attended in Houston, Texas on 22nd September where PM Modi addressed Indian diaspora, Trump said, “He is a great gentleman and a great leader. I remember India before was very torn. There was a lot of dissension, lot of fighting and he brought it all together. Like a father would. Maybe he is the ‘father of India’.” He further added that the Indian diaspora at the ‘Howdy, Modi!’ event loved Prime Minister Modi. “People went crazy. It was like Elvis. He is like an American version of Elvis. They love your Prime Minister,” he said. Elvis Presley was an iconic American actor and singer and is often referred to as “The King of Rock and Roll”.

On Islamic terror

In another question, a journalist asked President Trump that during the Houston event, Trump had said that US stands with India in the fight against radical Islamic terrorism. With reference to that, how would he see Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan’s statement that Pakistan’s ISI had trained Al Qaeda terrorists.

To that, President Trump looked at PM Modi and said, “I have not heard that and your Prime Minister will take care of it.”

The heads of two nations were addressing the media at the UN headquarters ahead of a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of UN General Assembly. Trump also added that the US will have a trade deal with India real soon. “We will have a larger deal down the road a little but we will have a trade deal soon,” he said. In June this year, the US had ended the privileges India was enjoying under the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) which was implemented since 1974.

Misogyny? Congress spokesperson Sanjay Jha feels sad when men leave, but attacks women who leave the party

0

As the political fortunes of the Congress party keep dwindling, the phenomenon of party leaders quitting the party continues. Any senior leader leaving the party should be a concern for party leaders, but for Sanjay Jha, national spokesperson of the party, the gender of the politician leaving the party seems to matter while reacting to such news.

A few days ago, Former Jharkhand Congress chief Ajoy Kumar left the party to join Aam Aadmi Party, while Tripura Congress chief Pradyot Deb Barman resigned from all party posts today. Reacting to these developments, Sanjay Jha today tweeted that he is deeply saddened due to this.

Sanjay Jha said that when talented people like Pradyot Deb Barman and Ajoy Kumar leave the party, all he can say that is deeply saddened.

But when Congress spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi had left the party and joined Shiv Sena, Jha had different take in the issue. He had said that it was “political opportunism” and he had criticised her for not having any clear political ideology. Sanjay Jha had alleged that Priyanka Chaturvedi was joining a party which is absolutely misogynistic, fundamentalist and is against the basic principles of democracy.

Earlier after former Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi had left the party and joined BJP, Sanjay Jha had said that she has neither a conscience not a soul. Joshi had been a veteran Congress leader, but Sanjay Jha didn’t think it was a loss for the Congress party after she had left the party.

This makes one wonder, is Sanjay Jha’s views on Congress leaders leaving the party change depending on the gender of the politician?
