Fashion designer Agnimitra Paul who was accompanying Babul Supriyo heckled too, saree torn by pro-Naxal supporters in JU

Fashion designer Agnimitra Paul, who was accompanying Union Minister Babul Supriyo at Jadavpur University yesterday, was also on the receiving end of hooliganism by pro-Naxal activists. In a Facebook post, Paul, who has recently joined the BJP said that her saree was torn and she was abused and manhandled by the ‘activists’.

Paul shared a video on Facebook which clearly shows how she was assaulted by a heckling crowd.

Addressing the message to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, she said, “What excuses you would put forward when a lady is being publicly manhandled, molested or abused by students inside a premium university campus just because she committed the fault of attending a fresher’s welcome program organized by ABVP.” She added that such a behaviour is a matter of shame for the entire system. She said that Mamata and her rule is a ‘curse’ to this constitution and she must resign. Paul even condemned the role of Jadavpur University’s Vice Chancellor and the local police for the way the incident was handled.

Last night she had narrated the ordeal on how the Jadavpur University chancellor allegedly remained a mute spectator.

She said that she had requested the Vice Chancellar Suranjan Das to call the police to escort them as thousands of students ‘wanted to assault’ them again while they were on their way out but instead of calling the cops, he remained a mute spectator. Paul said that the vice chancellor said he needed ‘permission’ to call the police.

The Vice Chancellor, then fell ill during all the heckling and was admitted to a hospital.

Paul was accompanying Union Minister Babul Supriyo, who were invited to attend an event organised by the ABVP, students wing of the RSS. The minister who is also an accomplished singer, was invited to perform at the event.

Ahead of his visit, activists of Students Federation of India and Trinamool Chhatra Parishad, the student wings of CPI and TMC, had prepared to stop the union minister from entering the university. When Babul Supriyo arrived at the university, the activists gathered at the gate blocking it and presented him from entering the campus at the gate.

Amide the slogans of “Babul Supriyo go back”, the minister was shoved and pushed back by the activists holding red flags. The minister was also manhandled by several people. Some pulled his shirt, while one student was pulling his hair. In the pushing and pulling, Babul Supriyo fell on the ground, and the collar of his shirt was torn.

Pakistan: Police arrests two classmates in connection with the mysterious death of Hindu student Namrita Chandani

0

On Thursday, the Sindh Police finally arrested two students in connection with the murder of Namrita Chandani, a Hindu girl who was found murdered at her university hostel under mysterious circumstances a few days ago in Larkana, Pakistan.

According to the reports, two classmates of Namrita Chandani, the girl whose dead body was found mysteriously in the hostel room, have been detained by the police in Pakistan’s Sindh province.

The two suspects have been taken into the custody by the police after they traced the call data from Namrita’s cell phone. Namrita’s room was locked from inside. However, the police have not yet ascertained whether she committed suicide or was murdered.

Masood Bangash, SSP of Larkana stated that both suspects were Namrita’s fellow classmates and were taken into custody after tracing the call details from the deceased’s cell phone. According to police, picture evidence and other materials including exam passes were found from Namrita’s hostel room. The laptop of the deceased is also being inspected for possible clues by investigators.

Reportedly, the police officer said that some of the text messages have been removed from Namrita’s cell phone and added that her mobile phone had been sent for forensic examination to FIA head office in Islamabad.

The mysterious murder of Namrita has raised suspicions whether they were attempts to forceful conversions, which has become rampant in Pakistan especially in Sindh.

Namrita Chandni, a final-year student of Bibi Asifa Dental College in Larkana district, was found dead lying on a cot with a rope tied to her neck on Monday. Chandani, who belonged to Ghotki town, was found lying on a charpoy earlier this week with a piece of cloth tied to her neck while her room was locked from inside.

The police and other authorities have tried to downplay the incident by saying that she committed suicide. However, her family has asserted that she was murdered. Her brother, Vishal who is a medical consultant, said that the preliminary checkup showed that she was murdered.

In his statement to the media, Vishaal had also said that the family had sought permission from the local administration for conducting a post-mortem of his sister from a private hospital and bearing all of the expenses.

The mysterious death of Hindu student Namrita comes just a day after violence against minority Hindus was unleashed by Muslims from Ghotki, Pakistan, the region where the deceased hailed from. Ghotki, a city in Pakistan’s Sindh province has been known for the persecution of Hindus, who are in minority in Pakistan.

On Sunday, following an allegation of blasphemy against a Hindu school principal, Hindu temples, shops and homes of minority Hindus were ransacked by Muslim rioters. However, later it was revealed that the attack on Hindus was a pre-planned event to cover-up a child abduction incident. The school principal had thwarted efforts by giving refuge to one of the Hindu girls, who was abducted by associates of child kidnapper Mian Mitho.

Tulsi Gabbard welcomes Modi to the United States, apologises for not being able to attend ‘Howdy, Modi!’ event

US President hopeful Tulsi Gabbard today welcomed Prime Minister Modi to the United States of America. In a video message posted on YouTube, Gabbard extended warm welcome to Prime Minister Modi. PM Modi is scheduled to arrive in the US on Saturday, September 21.

“Aloha and Namaste!,” she said while welcoming the PM and said sorry to not be able to welcome him in person due to her previously scheduled presidential campaign events. “India is the world’s largest democracy and one of the United States’ most important partners in the Asia-Pacific region. Our two nations must continue to work closely together if we are to address the pressing issues which impact us and the world,” Gabbard said in her video address.

Stressing on the need to work together for a better tomorrow, Gabbard said, “Issues like combating climate change, preventing nuclear war and nuclear proliferation and improving the economic well being of our people. So as we build a strong and lasting partnership between our two nations focusing on areas of economic growth, wealth and opportunity and equality, science, health, the environment, security and counter terrorism, we can bring about the idea of ‘Vasudhaiva kutumbakam (the world is a family)‘ recognising that everyone on our planet, we are all one family. There is no place for hate, bigotry, ignorance and prejudice.”

Earlier this week, Gabbard had taken to Twitter to call out the lies spread by Indian media persons that she has ‘refused’ to join the much awaited ‘Howdy, Modi!’ event in Houston on 22nd September. A shady website with dubious credentials had stated that Gabbard had dropped out of ‘Howdy, Modi’ event after Congressman Ro Khanna’s call to ‘reject Hindutva’. The anti-Modi purveyor of fake news had lapped it up and spread the fake news far and wide. Gabbard, then responded to a tweet by ‘journalist’ Rana Ayyub rubbishing the report clarifying that while she will not be able to attend ‘Howdy, Modi!’ event, she was hoping to meet PM Modi during his visit to the US.

The Howdy event will be the largest ever event addressed by an Indian Prime Minister in North America and also the largest for a foreign leader in the US other than Pope Francis. The Howdy event will be Prime Minister Modi’s third major address to the Indian-American community after he became PM in 2014 and the first after his re-election in May. The previous two were at the Madison Square Garden in New York in 2014 and the Silicon Valley in 2016. Both the events were attended by more than 20,000 people. US President Donald Trump will also be attending the event in Houston.

Karnataka woman receives triple talaq on WhatsApp from husband in Dubai, says ‘not accepted’ and files complaint

0

A Muslim woman in the district headquarters town of Shivamogga in Karnataka has approached police accusing her husband, living in Dubai, of giving her ‘triple talaq’ over WhatsApp.

The couple who have been married for 20 years, usually got into altercations over small issues. On some pretext of something or the other, the man, who had left for Sharjah-Dubai in January and had not come back since then, used to repeatedly pick up fights with his wife during their conversations, and finally gave her talaq (divorce) in August, stating he “doesn’t want” her, police said quoting the woman’s complaint.

“He had initially sent her talaq message over WhatsApp, and then called her to utter the same,” police said. The woman has not “accepted” the talaq and sought justice by lodging a complaint. “I don’t have any financial support and have a daughter to take care of,” she has said in her complaint.

Though the couple, who were in their 40s, did not have their own children they had adopted a girl child.

Notably, UAE is amongst the many Muslim countries which have abolished the practice of Triple Talaq or talaq-e-biddat. This practice still allowed in India till 2017, before the Supreme Court had termed it unconstitutional in September that year. After that, the BJP government passed a law this year making the use of triple talaq a criminal offence.

Modi led BJP government, amidst severe resentment from the opposition, had on July 2019, got the Triple Talaq Bill passed in the Rajya Sabha. On August 1, President of India Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to the landmark Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019, that abolishes the practice of instant Triple Talaq with which the law came into force retrospectively from 19th September 2018.

The historic triple talaq bill passed by Narendra Modi led NDA government makes a declaration of talaq-e-biddat in spoken, written or through SMS or WhatsApp or any other electronic chat illegal. Talaq-e-biddat refers to the pronouncement of talaq three times by a Muslim man in one sitting to his wife resulting in an instant and irrevocable divorce.

The triple talaq law also makes a declaration of talaq-e-biddat cognisable offence that gives a police officer powers to arrest the offender without requiring a warrant. A Muslim man pronouncing instant triple talaq attracts a jail term of three years under the triple talaq law. The accused under the triple talaq law is entitled to bail, which can be granted by a magistrate. But the bail can be granted only after the magistrate has heard the aggrieved woman.

Despite the law coming into force, there have been many instances where women are still being victimised, but at least, the government audacious move besides all odds to criminalise triple talaq has given courage to the Muslim women to stand up against the abhorrent practice.

Recently, in an exemplary act of bravery, a Muslim woman belonging to Rampur of Uttar Pradesh tore the piece of talaq paper at a counselling centre in Moradabad, where the couple had gone for a ‘mediation’ while saying that “this (triple talaq) won’t work anymore.

The victim woman had complained to Moradabad SP that her husband would often harass her for dowry. On July 1, the husband had written talaq thrice on a piece of paper and handed it over to her. The SP had then asked the couple to visit the Nari Utthan Kendra counsellor.

Likewise, in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh a Muslim man named Mohammad Ali returned to his wife fearing arrest after the historic Triple Talaq bill became a law making the illegal divorce a punishable offence.

Punjab CM Amarinder Singh likens Pakistan’s proposed service charge on Kartarpur corridor to ‘Jizya’, says against Sikh ideology

0

Likening Pakistan’s proposed facilitation charge on Indian pilgrims visiting the Kartarpur Sahib Gurudwara to ‘Jizya’ or ‘Jaziya’, a tax imposed in earlier times on non-Muslims in Muslim countries, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on September 19 (Thursday) reiterated his demand for the immediate withdrawal of this service tax by Pakistan.

Pointing out that this controversial and regressive tax was abolished by Mughal Emperor Jalal-ud-din Muhammad Akbar during his rule, the Chief Minister said the proposed Pakistani service charge of $20 per visitor was against the basic spirit of Sikh ideology of allowing ‘khulle darshan deedar’ of the gurdwaras or Sikh shrines which remained in Pakistan after partition.

Amarinder Singh, in an informal media interaction, during his visit to Dera Baba Nanak and Zero Line with his Cabinet where he reviewed the progress of the Kartarpur corridor construction work, said that he has already sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention to pressurise Pakistan into withdrawing its proposed service charge and suggested that the Minister of External Affairs take up the matter in the bilateral meetings in this regard.

The Punjab CM expressed confidence that the work on the Kartarpur corridor on the Indian side would be completed by October 30, though he expressed concern about the pace of progress on the Pakistani side. “Inspected the construction work of the Kartarpur Corridor in Dera Baba Nanak. Met with the officials concerned who have assured me that the ongoing work will be completed by 30th October and the corridor will be open in time for the 550th Prakash Purab of Guru Nanak Dev Ji,” Singh said.

On November 22 last year, the government of India had announced its intention to build the Indian side of the Kartarpur Corridor and had urged Pakistan to reciprocate by building the corridor on Pakistan side.

On September 4, the third round of talks between India and Pakistan on the Kartarpur Corridor ended without reaching an agreement.

India rejected Pakistan’s proposal of charging a service fee for visiting the Gurudwara. Pakistan was also unwilling to allow the presence of Indian Consular or Protocol Officials at the Gurudwara premises. These hurdles prevented an agreement from being reached.

This was the second meeting on the Kartarpur Corridor issue between the two countries after the abrogation of Article 370. Amidst tensions between the two countries, it was reported earlier that the Pakistani establishment wants to revive Khalistani terrorism through the corridor.

AAP leader Alka Lamba disqualified from Delhi Assembly on the ground of defection to Congress

0

AAP’s Chandni Chowk MLA Alka Lamba was disqualified from the Delhi Assembly on Thursday on grounds of defection.

The disqualification petition was moved by AAP MLA Saurabh Bhardwaj days after she tweeted that the “time has come to say goodbye” and urged AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal to “accept her resignation” over Twitter on September 6. She had also tweeted her picture with Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, which left media contemplating her return to her old party.

“Arvind Kejriwal Ji, your spokespersons asked me as per your desire, with the full arrogance that the Party will accept My resignation even on Twitter. So pls Kindly accept My resignation from the primary membership of the ‘Aam Aadmi Party’, which is now a ‘Khas Aadmi Party’,” Lamba had said in her tweet.

Delhi Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel on Thursday disqualified Chandni Chowk MLA Alka Lamba from the legislative assembly. Lamba was dismissed on the grounds of defection.  According to reports, she was summoned by the Speaker in connection with Bharadwaj’s letter in which he sought her disqualification from the assembly.

The AAP’s ‘disgruntled’ MLA from Chandni Chowk had been complaining since over a year that she is being shunned by party leadership and has been time and again saying that it was time for her to leave the party but was somehow not officially resigning.

Notably, senior leaders in AAP were ready to accept her resignation but she was not resigning despite announcing it several times. AAP spokesperson Saurabh Bharadwaj had stated that Lamba has ‘announced’ her impending resignation over a dozen times but is yet to actually resign. He had added that the party will accept her resignation even on Twitter.

Interestingly, weeks after she was asked to resign, party chief, Arvind Kejriwal had ‘unfollowed’ Alka Lamba on Twitter and removed her from WhatsApp groups.

On Wednesday, however, Alka Lamba, responding to the petition to disqualify her, backtracked and said that she had never submitted her resignation in writing and that her tweets didn’t count.

“I was asked if I had joined the Congress officially. I told him (Speaker Ram Niwas Goel) no. He also asked if I resigned from the AAP in written, I again said no. These two are facts and truth. My picture with Sonia Gandhi was shown in the Assembly. When asked about it, I showed Arvind Kejriwal’s photo with Lalu Prasad Yadav and asked what could be implied,” she said.

Lamba was associated with the Congress for over 20 years before she joined the Aam Aadmi Party in 2014.

‘Motormouths, please have respect for the Supreme Court’, PM Modi slams leaders for comments on Ayodhya Ram Janambhoomi issue

0

While addressing a rally in Nashik in Maharashtra, PM Modi launched a blistering attack against those people who are desperately trying to derail the Supreme Court’s hearing on the Ram Janambhoomi Case.

“In the last 2-3 weeks, I’m seeing some blowhards and blabbermouths are talking trash about the Ram Temple case. It is very important that every citizen respects the highest court of the country. When the issue of Ram Temple is underway at the court and each of the sides are putting forth their arguments and the apex court is taking its time out of busy schedule, I’m shocked from where these people have emerged,” PM Modi said.

Furthermore, PM Modi asserted that these people are trying to derail the litigation continuing at the Supreme Court. “We should have faith in the Supreme Court. We should trust BR Ambedkar’s constitution. We should have firm belief in the judicial process. From the holy land of Nashik, with my joined hands, I request to all those blowhards and blabbermouths, for the sake of Lord Ram, to close their eyes and put their unwavering faith in the judicial process of the country,” PM Modi said.

PM Modi also hailed his government’s decision of repealing Article 370. He said that the abrogation of Article 370 was not just a decision take by the government but it was a manifestation of the sentiments of 130 crore Indians. PM Modi asserted that the move heralded a new beginning in Jammu and Kashmir and emancipated millions of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh residents from the vicious cycle of violence, terror, separatism and corruption.

Besides, PM Modi also emphasised that his government has empowered the country’s Armed Forces with modernised weapons, Bullet-proof jackets and attack helicopters. He also said that very soon Rafale jets will enhance our Armed forces’ defence capabilities.

Posters demanding ban on Digvijay Singh’s entry into temples appear in Bhopal after his slanderous remark on Hindus

0

Anonymous posters seeking a ban on Congress leader Digvijay Singh’s entry into temples were put up outside various temples in Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh on Thursday.

This came after Digvijay Singh, who is infamous for making controversial statements, kicked up a storm on Tuesday claiming that people wearing Saffron are committing rapes inside the temples these days.

The posters, which emerged outside various temples including the Parshuram temple in Char Imli area, carried pictures of the Congress veteran and read: “Hindu samaj ki yahi pukar, Hindu virodhi Digvijaya Singh ke liye mandiron ke darwaze band hon, band hon, by Hindu Samaj” (This is an appeal of Hindu society that doors of temples should be closed for anti-Hindu Digvijaya Singh).

These posters were, however, removed the next morning.

Congress leader Digvijay Singh, generally known for making slanderous statements against the Hindus said on Tuesday that people donning “saffron robes” are committing rapes which are taking place in “temples”, and thus defaming the Sanatan Dharma (ancient religion). He made the defamatory remark while addressing the Sant Samagam in Bhopal.

He added that it is a matter of concern that people are defaming ‘Sanatan Dharma’. Singh further added that and even god will not forgive those who are doing these things in the name of religion.

“Today, people are wearing saffron clothes and raping, rapes are happening inside temples, is this our religion? Those who have defamed our ‘Sanatan Dharma’, not even God will forgive them,” Digvijaya Singh said.

Digvijaya Singh, who is known to make illogical statements, had sparked a major row recently by claiming that BJP and the right-wing Hindu outfit Bajrang Dal are getting money from Pakistan’s spy agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). The veteran Congress leader further alleged that non-Muslims were spying for ISI more than the Muslims and everyone should understand this fact.

Hindu Charter to organise National Conference on Equal Rights for Hindus, to seek amendment of constitution

0

A National Conference on Equal Rights for Hindus will be organized by the Hindu Charter on the 21st of September in Delhi with the objective of preparing a draft Resolution and Constitution (Amendment) Bill for the amendment of articles 12, 15, 19, 25 to 30.

The discussion will focus on six topics pertaining to the discourse. These are, Rights of citizenship of persecuted adherents of indigenous religions of India, Organized Conversions Subverting the Religious Character of the Indian Society and Civilisation, Selective Undue Interference by the State & Judiciary in Customs and Practices of Hindus, Control and management of Hindu Temples & Religious Institutions and misappropriation of their properties for secular purposes by the Indian State, Indian State Facilitating Conversion of Hindus by Sectarian Public Funding, Indian State Hindering Inter-Generational Transmission of Ancient Civilizational Knowledge, and Fragmentation of Hindu society by denying Hindus the Right to administer Educational Institutions without Undue State Interference.

As is apparent, the Conference will focus on the ‘core issues’ related to the sustenance and the continued existence of the Hindu Civilization. The delegates involved in the discussions will emphasize the institutional discrimination faced by Hindus in our country. Most of these issues pertain to laws passed during the Congress era which effectively denied Hindus equal rights with respect to minority religious communities in India.

The organizers state explicitly that it is an Advocacy and Activist Conference. Hence, “the panelists have a higher responsibility to unequivocally articulate the issues for formulation of actionable policy and legislative suggestions.” As for the format of the discussions, it “will be akin to the time tested avadhana prakriya, with the panelists acting as avadhanis and the delegates performing the role of pruschakas (questioners).”

One of the objectives of the Conference is to “raise awareness about these civilizational issues, so that more and more people are informed of the deep discrimination of existential concern for our indigenous religions (such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism), culture and our ancient civilization which are primarily informed by Sanatana Dharma.”

The Hindu Charter requests the government to “treat us Hindus equally by giving equal rights and freedoms on par with those of religious minorities by upgrading our constitutional status by amendment of articles 12, 15, 19, 25-30.” It states that “India being the only State with Hindu majority and the only homeland for adherents of indigenous religions of India,” it has a “civilizational responsibility towards the indigenous religions and its adherents. However, India, in all these years has shown an inexplicable reticence in discharging its civilisational responsibility of helping millions of Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and Sikhs from genocidal religious persecution in other countries.”

The Hindu Charter also expressed their gratitude towards the Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, the RSS and the BJP for the abrogation of Article 370, one of the core demands of the Hindu Charter.

The discussions will be live-streamed on the youtube channel of Hindu Charter. It can be watched on Saturday here.

After Kannada media outrage over a joke on GI tag of ‘Mysore Pak’, its inventors to seek GI tag for the sweet

0

People who worried that the famous ‘Mysore Pak’ is on the brim of losing its identity after Kannada media mistook a sarcastic tweet, made on it by scientist Dr Anand Ranganathan on September 15, to be a serious one, can now relax, as the inventors of the sweet have decided to seek a GI Tag for the same.

According to a report by Times of India, the descendants of Kakasura Madappa, who is believed to have invented Mysore Pak during the reign of Maharaja Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, has now decided to apply for the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.

“Kakasura Madappa came up with it while making another sweet. When Maharaja asked about its name, he fumbled. Later, the Maharaja named it Mysore Pak,” revealed Kakasura’s grandson Kumar, who now runs a sweet shop by the name Guru Sweets which is famous for its Mysuru Pak.

Kumar further added, “Last year when D Randeep was the deputy commissioner, we submitted records related to Mysore Pak. Its history has been recorded. We have decided to move the Intellectual Property Office in Chennai seeking GI recognition”.

Meanwhile, Shivanand Madappa, the great-grandson of Kakasura also confirmed the same, “Yes, We have now decided to file for GI tag. We will consult with all the elders in the house and then approach the intellectual property office to seek a real GI tag.”

The GI tag is issued by the Geographical Indications Registry for a product that corresponds to a specific geographic location or origin, for instance, Darjeeling Tea. The right enables the tag holders to prevent third-party usage.

The family’s response came after the sarcasm in the tweet made by Dr Anand Ranganathan on the issue of ‘Mysore Pak’ was missed by few in Kannada media which in turn blew it out of proportion and started outraging over it. In a joke, he had tweeted that finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman had granted the Mysore Pak GI tag to Tamil Nadu.

The Tweet was misused by local media in Karnataka to spread fake news. They tried to make people believe that the two states, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, are fighting over the sweet dish which is believed to have been developed in Mysore. It also accused Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman of ‘giving’ the GI tag of Mysore Pak to Tamil Nadu.

Taking the controversy to another level, an anchor of Suvarna news, Jayaprakash Shetty even asked for the arrest of scientist Ranganathan for claiming Mysore Pak belonged to Tamil Nadu. The anchor was so enraged that he did not miss out on dragging the Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman into the entire fiasco. In an angry tone, he said that Anand Ranganathan was the one who gave the idea to Nirmala Sitharaman to declare GI tag for Mysore Pak in favour of Tamil Nadu.

Further, calling his tweets ‘seditious’, the anchor questioned why can not he joke about Dr Ranganathan having connections with Pakistan.

In an unnecessary attack against Ranganathan, Shetty further misled the viewers by referring to a tweet made by Anand Ranganathan where he had promptly requested the people of Karnataka to end the issue. The anchor stated that it was because of the pressure exerted by the media, Dr Ranganathan sought to apologise for his gaffe.

However, calling the entire row over ‘Mysuru Pak’ unnecessary, the family said it “felt it’s time they got recognition for spreading sweetness in the world.”

“My great-grandfather, who invented the Mysore Pak, decided to set up a small sweet shop along the Dasara Jumbo Savari route 60 years ago. We are located in the main market area. This popularised the sweet all the more,” said Nataraj, another great-grandson of Kakasura Madappa.
