Witness identifies Father Thomas Kottoor and Father Jose Puthrukkayil in the 1992 Sister Abhaya murder case

The Sister Abhaya murder case, one of the longest-running murder investigation in Kerala, has now taken a twist after a key witness testified before a special court that he had seen two men including Father Thomas Kottoor in the St Pius X convent compound in Kottayam on the day when the Sister Abhaya was found murdered in the well of the convent.

According to the reports, Adakka Raju gave a statement in the CBI court identifying Christian priest Father Thomas Kottoor, the first accused in the case. Raju said that the priest was seen in the St Pius X convent in the wee hours of March 27, 1992, the day Sister Abhaya was alleged to be murdered.

Earlier, he had given a statement to the CBI and the magistrate that he saw the two Christian priests in the convent on the night he had gone there to steal copper plates from the terrace.

“I had been on the terrace for stealing copper components of the lightning conductor installed atop the convent building. I had committed theft on two days and was there on the third day looking for the remaining copper components. I saw two men walking up the stairs with a torch and they were seen surveying the surroundings. One of them was a tall man and the other one was Fr Thomas Kottoor, who is in this court. As they were there, I abandoned my plan and left the place,” Raju told the CBI special court.

During the examination by CBI prosecutor, Raju identified Father Kottoor, who was also present in the court. Raju told the court that he identified both Father Kottoor and Father Jose Puthrukkayil, who was later discharged from the case after CBI summoned him for an identification parade after the arrest of the accused in the case in 2008.

Raju had earlier given a sworn statement to the judicial first-class magistrate in Ernakulam. He also levelled serious allegations against the crime branch team, which had initially probed the case. He said he had been picked up by the crime branch sleuths and kept in custody for almost 60 days.

“Samuel sir (crime branch officer) asked me to own up the crime. He said I would get a new house, my kids would get a good education and my wife would get a new job if I agreed to the proposal. I was brutally tortured in custody with my hands and knees tied up. I had thought of owning up the crime at one point. But, by that time, another person, who landed up in the custody, helped me by informing the court about my plight. Then, I was handed over to Kottayam West police where I was booked for a theft case,” said Raju.

However, during the cross-examination, advocate B Raman Pillai representing the Christian priests listed out around 10 criminal cases in which Raju had been an accused. He said Raju had been a juvenile delinquent and admitted to juvenile home for two years.

Raju did not deny accusations made by lawyer Pillai, which included cases of stabbing a man and abetting the suicide bid of his own wife. The defence lawyer tried hard to prove that the witness had a questionable character and his statements could not be taken on face value. The cross-examination of Raju will continue on Friday.

Sister Abhaya, a Catholic sister, was found dead in Saint Pius X Convent in Kottayam on 27 March 1992. Abhaya was a member of St. Joseph’s Congregation for religious sisters under the Syro-Malabar Catholic Archeparchy of Kottayam, Kerala.

Initially, the local police which investigated the case had closed it with a theory of suicide. The Crime Branch which took up the investigation also later tried to strengthen the suicide theory, with claims of psychological illness of the deceased.

However, with CBI taking charge of the probe concluded that it was indeed a murder and found two priests and a sister responsible for the murder and arrested them on 19 November 2008. Father Jose Poothrikkayil, Father Thomas M. Kottur and Sister Sephys are all accused of murdering Sister Abhaya, whose body was mysteriously found in convent hostel’s well.

Azam Khan, who once sent UP cops looking for his stolen buffaloes, now booked for stealing buffaloes

Samajwadi Party leader and land mafia Azam Khan is booked for ‘dacoity’ and stealing buffalo. Two people have filed an FIR against him in Rampur for allegedly stealing buffalo. Recently, his anticipatory bail plea was also rejected. In 2014, Azam Khan’s own buffaloes were stolen when he sent the top UP cop looking around for his stolen buffaloes.

As per reports, one person has filed a case against Azam Khan for stealing two buffaloes whereas another person has filed a case against him for stealing one buffalo.

2016 case

As per the reports, the case is from 2016. It is alleged that on 16th October, 2016 at 6 am, an orphanage and houses nearby were being broken down to construct Rampur Public School. Asif and Zakar Ali have alleged that at that time, Khan and his friend Circle officer Alay Hasan and four others barged into their house and stole their buffalo and Rs 25,000 in cash. The FIR also mentions 40 unknown persons.

Troubles for Azam Khan

Yesterday, a case has been registered under Sections 452, 354, 389, 305, 448, 427, 504, 506, 120 B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). He was named in dacoity case where it was alleged that he and his allies forcefully acquired land from a farmer for a school he had built.

Azam Khan is facing 28 cases on charges of land grabbing for his Mohammad Ali Jauhar University, and one case of stealing books. Yesterday the Rampur District Court had rejected his plea for an anticipatory bail in those cases. Recently he was also declared as Land Mafia by UP government.

He was also in news recently for his problematic and sexist remarks against his colleagues in the Lok Sabha.

Uttar Pradesh: Madarsa teacher Suleman Ansari uses CCTV to watch girl students changing clothes, FIR registered

There have been numerous cases of rampant child abuse going on inside Madarsas. In another such incident, a teacher in a Madarsa in Uttar Pradesh’s Kushinagar allegedly used the CCTV cameras in the Madarsa to watch girl students as they changed clothes.

As per reports, the incident has been reported in the Mustafa Darul Uloom Madarsa in the Barwan Chhatar Das village under Hata police station area. There was a cultural programme organised on the occasion of Independence Day in the Madarsa. The girl students participating in the programme were asked to change into their costumes inside a classroom.

A teacher in the Madarsa, named Suleman Ansari, allegedly switched on the CCTV camera inside the classroom to watch the girls changing their clothes. The girl students inside the classroom had no idea that they were being watched.

As per some media reports, a child saw Suleman Ansari watching the girls through CCTV and later told the girl students that they were being watched by their teacher. However, another report in Patrika.com stated that the teacher, Suleman Ansari had himself teased the girls some days later that he has seen them change.

Horrified, the girls confronted their teacher over the incident. Ansari then allegedly threatened the girls and told them that he will get them thrown out of the Madarsa if they complained to anyone.

Later, the girls approached their family members who came to the Madarsa to confront Suleiman. Instead of admitting his mistake and apologising for it, Suleman allegedly started fighting with the villagers. The villagers later approached the police over the incident.

Local police have registered an FIR under section 354 against Suleman Ansari and the Madarsa manager.

Kashmiri girls marry two Bihari boys, Parvez and Tabrez, after abrogation of Article 370; girls’ father files ‘abduction’ complaint

Two brothers, Parvez and Tabrez have been arrested on the charges of kidnapping after they married two Kashmiri sisters soon after the abrogation of Article 370 and brought them back to their home in Supaul, Bihar.

According to the reports, the brothers Mohammed Tabrez, 26 and Mohammed Parwez, 24, hailing from Ramvishnupur village of Supaul worked as carpenters in Ramban in Jammu & Kashmir when they fell in love with the sisters. The brothers married them and later brought back their wives to their home in Bihar.

However, the angry father of the Kashmiri girls filed an FIR accusing the two brothers of kidnapping his daughters. The police from Jammu and Kashmir with the aid of their Bihar counterparts arrested both men for kidnapping the women from Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district.

Supaul Deputy Superintendent of Police Vidyasagar said, “A team of Jammu and Kashmir police reached here and arrested them. The accused are saying that the women willingly married them.”

Later, all four of them were produced in a Supaul court where the two sisters recorded their statements before the magistrate. The Kashmiri girls said they were adults and married the two men on their own will without any coercion. The sisters pleaded that they should be allowed to live with their husbands. The court allowed the Kashmir police to take them back on transit remand.

Pilibhit: Cow smugglers shoot at police; when arrested, confess to killing 23-year-old last week who tried to stop them

Five cattle smugglers who had allegedly shot at the 23-year-old Sonpal aka Sonu on 21st August, have been arrested. Sonu was shot by cow thieves after he tried to stop some butchers and smugglers trying to load a stolen pickup van.

According to police, five men were arrested and they all are believed to be involved in various other crimes as well. Superintendent of Police Manoj Sonkar said that one of the accused was previously booked for attempting to run over a sub-inspector by a cattle-laden vehicle in Shahjahanpur district three years ago.

On Sunday, the police had tried to stop down the vehicle of the accused near Lelhar-Bamrauli road. But, three members opened fire at the police officers. The police then chased down them and arrested them. The police searched the vehicle to recover a live cattle, country-made pistols and two-live cartridges.

During questioning the trio confessed to murdering Sonpal and also revealed the names of their two accomplices. The police later arrested them from Shahjahanpur district.

The accused have been identified as Raviulla, Ishtiaq, Mohammad Hasib, Farid and Menhadi Hassan. They are said to be repeat offenders and Hasib has 14 pending cases against him.

On 21 August, 23-year-old Sonpal hailed from Mohanpur Babura village was sleeping in his house when he found the cattle smugglers were trying to steal a calf. As he decided to confront the smugglers, the cow smugglers had shot him multiple times. A grievously injured Sonpal was then rushed to a hospital but unfortunately died along the way.

The Sonpal is, however, not the first such incident. Similar cases of gau rakshaks being killed trying to oppose the crime has previously also come to the fore. On July 31, a gau rakshak named Gopal had been killed after he was shot dead by a cattle smuggling gang. The incident occurred in a village near Palwal, Haryana.

On June 19, in a similar case, a person named Vikas Sharma, a resident of Natthu Colony, Ballabhgarh in Haryana was killed after he tried to stop the cattle smugglers. An FIR had been subsequently registered by the police against six persons identified as Arif (a resident of Utawad, Palwal), Tassi (a resident of Punhana), Subin (a resident of Dhauj), Teeman (a resident of Bibipur) and Tareef (a resident of Nuh).

Pakistan: Sikh priest’s daughter abducted, forcibly converted to Islam in Nankana Sahib, family pleads to Prime Minister Imran Khan for help

The terrorist state of Pakistan, which perpetrates falsehoods about the supposed mistreatment of minorities in India, has itself remained a dangerous place for minorities, especially the Sikhs and Hindus as rampant forced conversion have left the community vulnerable in the country.

In another case of forced conversions of minorities in Pakistan, a Sikh girl named Jagjit Kaur has allegedly been abducted and forcefully converted to Islam on a gunpoint in Pakistan’s Nankana Sahib city. The family of the victim has alleged that the girl was forced to marry a Muslim boy after bring forcefully converted to Islam. The 19-year-old girl is daughter of Bhagwan Singh, a ‘granthi’ (priest) of Gurudwara Tambu Sahib.

Reportedly, the family added that six people abducted their daughter Jagir Kaur at gunpoint on the night between August 27 and August 28. The girl’s family has also appealed assistance from Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan to protect the family and has demanded that the girl be sent back. They said even though an FIR had been filed, nothing was done to bring back the abducted girl. The girl’s brother has alleged that the goons have threatened them to withdraw the complaint otherwise they’d be killed.

Later, a video emerged in which Jagjit Kaur was seen claiming that she had ‘converted’ to Islam. The family of the girl begged Imran Khan for justice, stating that they will self-immolate if the girl was not returned.

Shiromani Akali Dal leader and Delhi MLA Manjider Singh Sirsa urged Imran Khan to take action and wrote: “It is disheartening to see 18-year old girls being converted forcefully to Islam in Pakistan!”.

Pakistan is notoriously known for its persecution of not only religious minorities but also ethnic minorities within their own country. The forceful conversion programmes have often been unleashed against the minorities especially Christians, Sikhs and Hindus living in Pakistan with atmost brutality.

There have been many such cases reported in the recent past. On March 20, two underage Hindu girls Raveena (13) and Reena (15) were abducted from their home in Pakistan’s Sindh on the eve of Holi. The girls were later forcefully converted and married off to older Muslim men.

In another horrific incident, a 13-year-old Pooja Sotahar Kumari, daughter of Fatan Rathore, resident of village Bakhsho Laghari in Hyderabad district’s Hosri Taluka, was kidnapped, forcefully converted and subsequently married off to a man identified as Syed Irshad Shah.

Recently, a report released by the Members of the European Parliament (MEP) threw light on the plight of religious minorities in Pakistan. The report claims that around 1000 girls from religious minorities are forcibly converted to Islam every year. The numbers might be higher as many cases are not even reported.

Missing girl who accused former minister Swami Chinmayanand of sexual abuse traced in Delhi hotel, SC to hear case tomorrow

The Supreme Court today taking suo moto cognizance of the matter involving an LLM student who has now been missing for the last five days after making sexual harassment allegations against BJP’s Swami Chinmayanand has agreed to hear the case tomorrow.

A group of Supreme Court lawyers had filed a petition to the Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi, to take suo moto cognizance of media reports on the case.

The LLM student from the Swami Shukdevanand Law College (SS Law College) in Shahjahanpur in Uttar Pradesh had released a video on social media on August 23, levelling allegations of sexual harassment against BJP leader Swami Chinmayanand.

In the video posted on Friday, the girl alleged that Chinmayanand, the director of her college, is threatening to kill her and her family as she has evidence that could land him in trouble. She asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath for help.

The student, however, went missing three days after the allegations were made. Recently, a new twist was added to this week-long matter. It was reported that the girl who had accused former BJP Union Minister Swami Chinamayanand of sexual harassment, has been traced in New Delhi, along with a boy who reportedly demanded a ransom of Rs 5 crore from Chinamayanand.

A senior Uttar Pradesh Police officer confirmed that a CCTV footage which had been retrieved from a hotel in Dwarka in Delhi establishes the presence of the victim with the boy who reportedly made an extortion call to Swami Chinmayanand.

“We have recovered an Aadhaar card, submitted as address proof, from the Delhi hotel. The couple shifted to another hotel on August 25,” said an official associated with the investigation, adding, “The boy also belongs to Shahjahanpur. Efforts are on to identify his place and family.”

The police have also traced the location and the escape route of the couple from Shahjahanpur to Delhi through their call records. Sources confirmed that after August 24, the couple switched off their phones and probably started using new numbers. The police also said that the girl spoke to her family last on August 24.

The police confirmed that the call records of the victim and the boy suggests that the two have been staying in the same premises in Delhi.

Earlier, Swami Chinmayanand had stated that he was being framed in the case as a part of a big conspiracy to malign the Uttar Pradesh government’s reputation. “This is a conspiracy against me and the girl in question is a part of it. There are four other boys who had earlier tried to blackmail me and extort money,” said the former Union Minister.

‘He never matures, his brain does not grow’, Gautam Gambhir takes a dig at Shahid Afridi

Gautam Gambhir, former cricket and current Member Parliament from East Delhi constituency, slammed Pakistan cricketer Shahid Afridi over his Kashmir remark on micro-blogging site Twitter Thursday.

“Some people never grow up, they play cricket but they never age. His brain doesn’t grow either. If he wants to politicise everything, why doesn’t he join politics but politics too needs people with maturity, which he lacks,” said Gambhir in Hindi.

A day earlier, Afridi had tweeted in support of Prime Minister Imran Khan’s appeal to show solidarity with Kashmiri’s on Friday in the wake of abrogation of Article 370. He had also announced his visit to LOC and shaheed’s home, which in all likelihood implies visiting the home of a person who is recognized as a terrorist by the India.

Afridi’s unwarranted political tweet earned the ire of Gambhir. The two have not been in good terms with each other on the field either and are often seen locking horns on social media.

In response, Gambhir, rather explicitly, took a dig at the Pakistani cricketer who is often seen venturing into uncharted territories of Kashmir by supporting terrorists wreaking havoc on the Indian soil at the behest of his country’s proxy war against India.

Gambhir tweeted a picture of Afridi and added, “In this picture Shahid Afridi is asking Shahid Afridi that what should Shahid Afridi do next to embarrass Shahid Afridi so that’s it’s proven beyond all doubts that Shahid Afridi has refused to mature!!! Am ordering online kindergarten tutorials for help.”

The war of words did not end at this and Afridi came back with reference to a comment by former mental conditioning coach Paddy Upton in his book that Mr Gambhir was “mentally the most insecure, negative and pessimistic”.

Ever since Afridi launched his autobiography ‘Game Changer’ he has been in the news. In his book he referred to the former India opener as the one who “lacked personality and has an attitude,” the two are seen taking swipes at each other online. Gambhir had hit at Afridi with a stinging tweet.
Afridi had in the past called for United Nation’s (UN) intervention to resolve the Kashmir issue. While Afridi had wanted the UN to help curb atrocities in Indian Kashmir, Gambhir had reminded him of the fact that these atrocities were prevalent in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK).
Both players have been at loggerheads for long and in 2007, they were booked for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct following a clash during an ODI match between India vs Pakistan in Kanpur.

Shahid Afridi and other Pakistani celebrities support Imran Khan’s call to come out in the streets on Friday in solidarity with Kashmiri Muslims

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has urged his entire nation to stand for 30 minutes on Friday in solidarity with Kashmiri Muslims against the Indian government’s decision to revoke the special autonomous status of Jammu and Kashmir.

During his televised address to the nation early this week, Imran had announced that weekly events would be held to express solidarity with Kashmiris. Imran wants the entire nation to come out on Friday between 12 noon to 12.30 and stand to register their protest against the Indian government.

Khan alleged that India’s actions tantamount to war crimes under the Fourth Geneva Convention. A bit rich coming from the country that exports terrorism to the world.

Nevertheless, with every door closing on him, these sought of theatrics remains very much expected from the frustrated Prime Minister. But what is surprising is that he is not the only one to believe in such stagecraft. Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi, who himself must be remorseful at his erratic U-turns, today took to Twitter to extend his support to his Prime Minister’s flaky idea.

Afridi in his Tweet called for support from all Pakistani’s and confirmed his presence at Mazar e Quaid at 12 pm on Friday.

He also extended an invitation to all cricketers and celebrities to “join him in his effort”.

Well, it seems that Afridi has a very short-lived memory. He forgets that it was only last year that he had stirred a hornet’s nest across the border after advising the Pakistani Government to set their own house in order before worrying about Kashmir. “Pakistan doesn’t need Kashmir; it is not able to even handle the four provinces it has,” Afridi said during a press interaction on November 14 last year.

However, there are other Pakistani celebrities who too joined the bandwagon. Amongst other’s who expressed support to Imran Khan are Pakistani cricketer Ahmad Shahzad, Pakistani actor and producer Humayun Saeed, Pakistani singers Shehzad Roy and Rabi Pirzada and Pakistani actor, model, writer and film director Shaan Shahid.

Bombay HC and Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace: Another embarrassing chapter in the inglorious history of Indian mainstream media

On Wednesday, a certain piece of news spread like wildfire. Numerous media outlets told Indians that a certain Bombay High Court judge had inquired Vernon Gonsalves, an ‘activist’ who had been arrested in connection with the ‘Urban Naxal’ case, why he had Leo Tolstoy’s literary classic, War and Peace, in his home.

Along expected lines, numerous people, including journalists, of a particular political dispensation rushed to pontificate about prevailing circumstances in the country. Now, it turns out, the judge hadn’t referred to the Classic at all. He was referring to an entirely different book.

Editor of Mumbai Mirror, Meenal Baghel, admitted on Twitter that the entire media fraternity goofed up big time on the matter. She informed people that the Judge, in fact, was referring to ‘War and Peace in Junglemahal: People, State and Maoists’ by one Biswajit Roy.

India Today confirmed Meena Baghel’s clarification. It quoted Yug Chaudhry, an advocate representing one of the accused in the Bhima Koregaon case, as saying, “The book found in the punchnama of accused Vernon Gonsalves is War and Peace in Junglemahal: People, State and Maoists by Biswajit Roy. Not War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy.”

The Judge, as per reports, was “shocked” to see the reportage on the matter. Justice Kotwal said, “You have made your point about the books not being banned. Besides, yesterday, I was reading the whole list from the chargesheet. It was written in such poor handwriting. I know War and Peace (by Leo Tolstoy). I was making a query on the entire list that police has mentioned (as evidence).”

Significantly, the judge also clarified that he was merely reading out the list of materials seized by police, and it does not mean that all of them are incriminating.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.jsThus, it appears another sensationalist bit of reporting by the mainstream media has bitten the dust. It only goes on to show that far too often, journalists are not skeptical enough of outrageous claims when it conforms with their political biases. Ignoring the media’s monumental biases for a moment, that it did not consider necessary to recheck the news to make sure that they had gotten it absolutely correct given the bizarre nature of the words in question only goes on to demonstrate their monumental incompetence.

What does it tell about the media that journalists cannot even do the one thing that’s their primary job? Some of the statements made by journalists and politicians alike on the fiasco are quite hilarious to read.

Sagarika Ghose, whose tweets are hilarious even under normal circumstances, said that “We are all in the grip of collective delusional insanity”. Well, we can partly agree with her remark. Some people are suffering from ‘collective delusional insanity’ and fortunately for the OpIndia team and our readers, it’s not us.

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh used the occasion to welcome us all to New India. Well, it certainly is New India. The media corrects its mistakes in a day, earlier they didn’t even bother themselves with such ‘minor’ indiscrepancy.

Part-time Fact-Checker and full-time propagandist, Pratik Sinha, had to delete one of his tweets in embarrassment. Meanwhile, astrologers are surprised because they didn’t foresee an occasion when Sinha will be capable of feeling that emotion in his entire lifetime.

Sinha’s comrade, Zubair, co-founder of AltNews, thought it would be funny to tweet an image of Narendra Modi reading Tolstoy’s book. Well, the tweet is funny now, but for entirely different reasons.

Swara Bhasker, however, hasn’t yet found the time to delete her embarrassing tweet yet. But the tweet Swara Bhasker quoted in hers has been deleted.

It seems recent developments haven’t yet reached the ears of ‘Youth ki Awaaz’, which is basically Far-Left Youth ki Awaaz. Long after it became common knowledge that the Bombay High Court judge wasn’t referring to Leo Tolstoy’s classic, this is what the media portal tweeted:

But the award for the most embarrassing statement on the matter, no doubt, goes to The News Minute. It published a report on the matter titled “After Bombay HC’s ‘War and Peace’ remark, time to check your anti-national bookshelves’. The report has since then been updated after recent developments.

The first couple of paragraphs are those rare few things that get funnier every time you read them. If anyone were curious about how it feels to have eggs thrown at your face, it might be a good idea to ask the editors of The News Minute.

In the end, it was another embarrassing chapter in the inglorious history of the Indian mainstream media. Journalists were more concerned about portraying current circumstances in the country in poor light than reporting accurately on facts and events. It again demonstrates that the primary allegiance of the mainstream media is towards political biases and not the truth.
