Sonbhadra massacre: A half a century old land dispute that led to the brutal killing of 10 people

Details have started to emerge about the land dispute which led to the brutal massacre in Ghorawal area in Sonbhadra district in Uttar Pradesh this week. On July 17, 10 people were shot dead and many more were injured when henchmen of a village head opened fire on local tribal people who were protesting against the occupation of what they claim is their land.

According to reports, around 200 people in 32 tractor-trailers were brought to occupy a piece of land in Ubhha village that was bought by Gram Pradhan Yagya Dutt two years ago. After arriving at the site to take over the land on Wednesday, they had surrounded the plot and started ploughing it. As the locals claim that the land was sold illegally, they arrived at the site and protested against this. This led to an altercation, which quickly turned violent when the goons of the Dutt, who had come prepared with guns, rifles, spears and lathis, started attacking them with lathis. But unable to chase them with that, they took out their firearms and opened fire on the villagers. According to survivors, the firing went for half an hour. 10 people were killed in the attack, and 29 were injured. 7 persons died on the spot, 2 died while taking to hospital, while 1 died in hospital. The injured are being treated at the BHU hospital in Varanasi.

The piece of land that led to this violence has been the centre of dispute for a long time. The local people belonging to Gonda tribe has been farming on the land, but its ownership has remained disputed for more than 60 years.

Yagya Dutt and several members of his family had purchased 145 bighas of from the wife and daughter of a retired IAS officer from Bihar cadre in 2017. Since then, they were trying to take possession of the property from Gond farmers, who were resisting the move. The Gond people had complained against the sale with revenue authorities and later filed a case in civil court earlier this year.

On the other hand, Dutt and his family have lodged three FIRs against members of the Gond community at the Ghorawal police station. People who are pursuing the case against the Gram Pradhan and his family as named in the FIRs. The FIRs alleged that several people from the Gond community had come with seven tractors and ploughed the land that they had purchased. FIRs were filed under sections 506 (criminal intimidation), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 447 (criminal trespass), 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object), 144 (joining unlawful assembly armed with deadly weapon), 352 (assault or criminal force otherwise than on grave provocation ), and 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) against the Gond community.

The dispute over the land dates back more than five decades, which started in 1950s. Local tribal people were cultivating the land for decades before the independence of India. After the implementation of UP Zamindari Abolition and Land Reforms Act, 1950, around 600 bighas of land owned by a local estate was recorded as infertile in the revenue records, and it was registered in the name of Gram Sabha. The local residents, mostly belonging to Gond tribe, continued tilling the land for cultivating after that.

But in 1955, 463 bighas of land was transferred in the name of Adarsh Cooperative Society. UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath says that it was done illegally by the Tehsildar, which planted the seed of the dispute. In 1989 when the president of the society passed away, 145 bighas from the plot were transferred in the names of a Patna based IAS officer’s wife and daughter, the daughter is also married to an IAS officer. The UP CM has pointed out that Congress was in power in the state when both this transfer of land had happened.

The Mishra family from Patna who had purchased that land had started collecting Lagaan (rent) from the farmers who were cultivating on the land. It is reported that every year one person used to come from Patna to collect Lagaan. The Tribals continued to do farming on the land by making the payment.

But in 2017 when it became to be known that the land has been sold to Dutt, the farmers stopped paying the Lagaan. Advocate Nityanand Dwivedi, who is representing the Gond farmers, said that the land was bought for Rs 2 crores. Since then Dutt’s family has been trying to take control of the land, which the villagers are opposing. The dispute intensified when Dutt filed cases against the community members, and it resulted in the tragedy on 17th July.

More details about the murky dealings that led to this incident will be known after the investigation ordered by the UP government is completed.

NIA questions editor of Kashmir newspaper in terror funding case, says ‘jihadi journalists’ in valley have help from ISI media cell

The owner and editor of a Kashmiri newspaper, known as the ‘Kashmir Reader’, was questioned by the NIA in a terror funding case, reports TOI. On Tuesday, the editor Mohammad Hayat Bhat of Pampore, Pulwama had arrived at the NIA’s Delhi headquarters for questioning.

The “Kashmir Reader” was launched in 2012 by Bhat. According to official sources, Bhat previously ran a small advertising agency called ‘Helpline Advertising Agency’ with aid from another country.

According to a municipal corporation official, in 2007, Bhat got the Srinagar Municipal Corporation hoarding installation contract for government advertisements for 10 years. He got the contract for about 150 places across Srinagar for a meagre amount.

NIA officials claim that Bhat had close ties with the terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba. He was said to have hired “jihadi journalists” to write for his newspaper. Some of them are now allegedly the executive members of the Kashmir Press Club. The agency also fears that the ‘Kashmir Editor’s Guild’ was created by ISI media cell in Rawalpindi.

Reports suggest that the NIA has been interrogating several Kashmir journalists for creating content that fuels hatred against the Indian government.

However, the newly elected body of the Kashmir Editors Guild (KEG) has condemned the TOI report, terming it as baseless. They have stated that they would be taking legal recourse over the report.

A few days ago, NIA had attached the Srinagar property of Kashmiri separatist Asiya Andrabi as ‘proceeds of terror crime’. The property has been used for the furtherance of terrorist activities of a proscribed terrorist organisation Dukhtaran-E-Millat. Asiya Andrabi was arrested last month along with several other separatists.

Punjab CM Capt Amarinder Singh accepts Sidhu’s resignation, says ‘should have worked instead of shunning responsibilities

Accepting the resignation of the controversial Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu, Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh criticised the former Local Government bodies Minister stating that he should have ‘assumed the portfolio given to him instead of shunning work’.

Punjab CM slammed Sidhu for leaving Congress in the lurch at a crucial time. The Chief Minister forwarded the resignation to Governor Punjab VP Singh Badnore for formal acceptance. “The minister should have assumed the portfolio handed to him in the middle of a critical paddy season instead of shunning work,” CM Amarinder Singh said while accepting Sidhu’s resignation.

On July 15, CM Singh had stated that the power and renewable energies is a very important portfolio for a state like Punjab and every day they receive queries regarding the ministry and its works.

Sidhu was divested of the Local Government portfolio following a miserable performance by Congress party in the Lok Sabha 2019 elections. Citing ‘inept handling’ of the portfolio assigned to him, Punjab CM Capt Amarinder Singh had shifted Sidhu from Local Government to Power Ministry. However, Sidhu had hit back saying he was being unfairly ‘singled out publicly’ despite him being a performer throughout.

Sidhu had since then not assumed the charge of Power Ministry and had recently tendered his resignation, sending his resignation to the already resigned party president Rahul Gandhi. Captain Amarinder Singh had now accepted Sidhu’s resignation at a time when crucial files have gone missing from the records of the Local Government ministry which was earlier headed by Sidhu.

Things went sour between Captain Amarinder Singh and Navjot Singh Sidhu when despite Captain’s advise Navjot Singh Sidhu had visited Pakistan on Pakistan PM Imran Khan’s invite for the Kartarpur groundbreaking ceremony. The ever-increasing rift between the Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu and Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh widened further after Sidhu’s wife Navjot Kaur asserted that Captain denied her Lok sabha ticket to fight elections. Singh had then refuted the allegations claiming she was offered to fight elections from Bhatinda or Amritsar but it was her personal decision to not fight from both the seats.

India tour of West Indies: The great Indian middle order search continues

When the selectors gather tomorrow to select the team for the tour of West Indies, the big question before them will be the same one that has been unanswered for the past 2 years, who occupies the middle order slots in the limited overs side.

After a lot of experimentation, India went with Vijay Shankar, Kedar Jadhav, Dinesh Karthik and MS Dhoni for the World Cup. Shankar got injured during the tournament, Kedar and DK had an underwhelming outing in England, and MS Dhoni continued to sharply divide opinions among the Indian fans.

The biggest question of all remains MS Dhoni’s spot in the middle order. It was widely expected that Dhoni will bid adieu to the international stage after the World Cup but there hasn’t been any such announcement. With his manager quashing retirement rumors yesterday, looks like Dhoni may have an eye on the T20 World Cup next year as his swan song. However, there are reports claiming that he may opt for a break and take rest during the West Indies tour, so the selectors are spared from making a tough call immediately.

Now with Dhoni likely to be “rested”, Shankar still recuperating from his toe injury, and Jadhav and DK likely to be dropped, India is going to see a new middle order in the Caribbean as they start the rebuilding process. Rishabh Pant is certain to occupy one of those slots while the race for other spots remains as open as it has been since the days of Yuvraj and Suresh Raina.

Among the contenders, Manish Pandey will be hopeful of getting recalled, the India A Captain boosted his chances with a timely hundred against West Indies A. Shreyas Iyer and Shubhman Gill have been among runs as well and will be hopeful of getting a call from the selectors. Mayank Agarwal was called up as the replacement for Shankar for some reason during the World Cup but his only chance of getting in the squad is if Dhawan isn’t deemed fit enough after his injury.

There is the option of pushing Hardik Pandya up the order as a regular Number 6 and having Jadeja as your number 7, but then the tail becomes too long with most of the Indian bowlers being genuine Number 11s.

In a relatively low key tour, this is going to be the biggest question – Will this new crop of batsmen step up and help India finally address this long standing problem of a brittle middle order?

Kerala: Students protest as Government college Principal removes ABVP flag and leaves SFI flag intact to ‘avoid clashes’

On Wednesday, ABVP members of the Government Brennen College, Thalassery erected a flag post on the campus as part of the “Balidaan Diwas” of Vishal in the Kannur district. The flag was erected next to that of the SFI’s flagpole. A video went viral showing the college principal, K. Falgunan, removing the flagpole and taking it outside the campus. The flags of the SFI remained untouched.

As per reports, the principal had given permission to erect the flagpole temporarily. The ABVP members were later asked to remove the flagpole. On refusing to do so, the principal himself removed the flagpole triggering protests. Protesters had later marched towards his home and held a demonstration. Falgunan has said that he removed the flagpoles only to prevent possible clashes between the SFI and the ABVP.

BJP leader P K Krishnadas had alleged that the campus was an SFI stronghold and that the principal was denying the ABVP members the right to carry out their organisation’s work. He said if the principal was sincere about avoiding clashes he could have removed the flags of both the groups. The principal had not removed the SFI’s flag. The BJP vehemently protested against the principal’s actions.

On the next day, ABVP members had attempted to erect the flagpole in the morning. However, they faced resistance from the police.

Later at 1 PM, ABVP members erected the flagpole with the permission of the principal. Reportedly, they were prevented from erecting the flagpole earlier as the Fraternity Movement was conducting a march at that time.

Meanwhile, the principal has said that he has received death threats from ABVP activists. Police have deployed been deployed in front of his house for protection.

The principal had also tried to clarify why he had removed the flagpole. He said “I removed the flag to avert the possible clashes between SFI and ABVP. Thousands of students had assembled on one side for SFI while the other side had around seven ABVP activists. I did what I thought would be the best in the situation to avert any mishap. I removed the flag pole and took it outside the campus and handed over to the police”.

Reportedly, the Brennen college has always been an SFI stronghold. Students from other organisations were prevented from functioning in the college. The CPM leader and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is also an alumnus of the college.

The SFI is the student body of the CPM, known for their violent campus politics. SFI college unit members have threatened and abused female students for not participating in the CPM’s “Women’s Wall”. SFI members were arrested on charges of murder for stabbing a fellow SFI member of the University College in Thiruvananthapuram. Talking about the incident BJP member AP Abdullakutty said that the SFI must now stand for “Stupid Federation of Idiots”.

The ABVP members were celebrating the martyrdom day of Vishal who was an RSS-ABVP activist who was murdered by members of the PFI in 2012.

Rotherham paedophiles received half a million pounds in legal aid from public money while their victims remain uncompensated

In a shocking development, it has come to the fore that paedophiles involved in the Rotherham Muslim grooming gang scandal have received legal aid up to £500,000 after raping children as young as 11 years old. Sickeningly, as many as 70 survivors did not receive any compensation at all and dozens of others received as little as £2000.

The paedophiles, the Hussain brothers namely Arshid, Bannaras and Basharat, raped girls as young as 11 years old. They were raped, tied up, tortured and passed around among abusers. Arshid was the ring leader and he was given a 35 year sentence, Bannaras received 19 year sentence and Basharat for 25 years.

Information received via a Freedom of Information request has revealed they were awarded £370,000 in legal aid for their costs in the 2016 crown court trial. Apart from this, they also received monetary aids for hearings in other magistrate courts and family courts, which is estimated to be over £100,000. It is being alleged that they exploited the country’s laws and defrauded the hard-earned money of the British taxpayers.

Shockingly, the rapists pleaded poverty to claim legal aid from taxpayers money despite running large businesses. They own a petrol pump, several restaurants and an egg farm that supplies to supermarkets, and several other properties. It is said that they had ‘owned’ the town for than 10 years. But they were still somehow able to get money to defend their heinous crimes.

Sammy Woodhouse, 34, one of their 50 victims, told Express UK, “This is completely outrageous and immoral. They have probably received 25 per cent more money than what the survivors of their abuse have had in total as compensation.” She added, “Something needs to be put in place to stop these people just laughing at the system and milking the taxpayer dry.”

Woodhouse is currently fighting for a change in the law that requires men, who have impregnated women via rape, to be informed regarding proceedings involving the child. She had approached the Rotherham Council seeking a care order for her son who had become involved in crime and drugs. According to her, the Council shockingly invited Arshid to meet their son despite having raped the child’s mother.

A former youth worker, who helped expose the scandal, said: “I’m totally shocked and horrified. This is terrible. These rapists and abusers are pure evil but they’ve had almost half a million pounds spent on them, yet these poor girls get nothing. It feels like the judicial system is not set up to protect victims of some of the most horrendous crimes of abuse, torture and trafficking this country has ever seen.”

This is not the first time the establishment is seen to take the side of the grooming gang. The crime had started in 1990s and went on for almost two decades, but it was ignored by police and local administration. The police had ignored the reports filed by victims because they feared that they will be accused of racism as all accused were Muslims of Asian origin, mostly from Pakistan. The City Council run by the Labour party was also reluctant to take any action as the perpetrators belong to a community that votes for the party.

Dhoni makes himself unavailable for West Indies Tour, will serve the paramilitary regiment

Just before a day of selection of Indian team cricket for the West Indies tour, the most experienced Indian wicket-keeper MS Dhoni has made himself unavailable for the tour and will serve his paramilitary regiment.

As per the BCCI Official (unnamed source) said that MS Dhoni has asked the selectors for a 2-month break so that he can spend the time with his regiment.

“Dhoni has made himself unavailable for the tour of West Indies as he will be spending two months with his paramilitary regiment,” the official told PTI.

There had been speculation that MS Dhoni would have been selected for the tour in the squad of 15 but not in playing 11 as his role would have been to mentor the youngsters.

MS Dhoni has been criticized for his approach in the middle order and gifting away runs as a keeper. He conceded most runs as a wicket-keeper in World Cup 2019, and his strike rate has been at worse in the last three years.

Despite the average performance, Dhoni had made it clear that he is not sure when will he retire from International cricket.

India’s next home series will start from September 15 against South Africa, and by then two months will be over.

Alwar: Dalit man beaten to death after his bike hits a Muslim woman, family alleges mob lynching by Umar Sher and associates

In Rajasthan’s Alwar district, a Dalit man named Harish Jatav died on Thursday after battling for his life for two days. Harish was allegedly beaten mercilessly by a mob after his bike hurt a Muslim woman in the Fasla village on Tuesday.

As per reports, Harish Jatav from Jhinvana village was passing through the market in Fasla village under Chopanki police station when a Muslim woman, a Hakiman (physician) was hit by his bike.

As per reports, both Harish and the woman were found on the Bhiwadi-Chopanki road. While the woman was taken to the hospital by her family members, Harish was taken to hospital in a critical condition by the police. He was bleeding profusely. Angry locals had reportedly thrashed Harish severely after the accident.

Harish Jatav was first taken to the nearby hospital in Tapukara area. As his condition deteriorated, he was shifted to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital. Harish finally died two days later on Thursday. His body was handed over to his family on Friday after postmortem.

Alwar SP Paris Deshmukh, however, has mentioned that there is no evidence to indicate that Harish was lynched by a mob.

The 28-year-old Harish was a truck driver by profession. He is survived by his wife, four daughters and a father who is blind.

Harish’s family have alleged that after his bike hit the woman, Harish was brutally beaten up by a man named Umar Sher and his associates. The family has lodged an FIR under sections 323, 343 and the relevant sections of the SC/ST (prevention of atrocities) Act.

The woman’s husband Jamaluddin has claimed that Harish was drunk and has lodged a complaint under section 279 over the incident. The police stated that investigation has been initiated and until after the detailed post-mortem report has been received they cannot say whether Harish’s death was due to mob-lynching.

West Bengal: ABVP student severely injured in bomb blast done allegedly by TMC goons, hospitalised in critical condition

An ABVP activist was gravely injured after a bomb blast at Kalyani University allegedly perpetrated by goons associated with the Trinamool Congress (TMC). He was initially admitted at J.N.M. Hospital, Kalyani but will be shifted to Apollo Gleneagles Hospital, Kolkata for further treatment. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon, we are told.

The injured has been identified as Tarak Howladar, a 19 year old student at the University. He was brought to the hospital at around 8 p.m. on Friday after the bomb blast allegedly done by TMC goons. His condition is said to be extremely critical.

According to Dr. Indranil Khan, vice president of the state unit of ABVP, the victim has lost a lot of blood. There is severe laceration in his left thigh and his femur bone was fractured, Khan stated. He was being shifted to Apollo Gleneagles Hospital in Kolkata for further integrated management under the departments of Plastic Surgery, Vascular Surgery and Orthopedics.

The ABVP has planned protests over the bomb blast allegedly by TMC goons at College Street on Saturday. They are expected to issue further statements on the matter in the afternoon.

The law and order situation in West Bengal has been terrible in recent times. Earlier this week, bombs were hurled at Bhatpara, a maternity home was ransacked and 5 crude bombs were recovered from the area. Earlier, two people had died and three were injured in BJP-TMC clashes in the same area.

Political violence in the state continues unabated and BJP workers and supporters are being murdered at a worrying frequency. Even women are not being spared. With circumstances getting worse every day, things don’t appear to be getting better anytime soon.
