Rafale Deal: CAG to table the audit report on offsets in Parliament in winter session

0

The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has finished the auditing of the offset deals in the Rafale fighter deal with France and is likely to table its report in the winter session of Parliament, reports Times of India.

According to the reports, the CAG in its report will submit the details of the audit of at least 32 offset contracts of the three defence services between 2012-13 and 2017-18.

The audit to be tabled will not be a standalone review of the Rafale offset deal but the review of 31 other offset deals between 2012-13 and 2017-18. The CAG in its audit has looked into pricing and other terms of offset contracts with a comparative study of the impact it will have on the overall cost of the jets. The auditor initially took up 42 such offset contracts for review but finally selected 32 for audit, including the Rafale deal.

Earlier, the CAG report on the Rafale deal was tabled in Parliament in February. The chief auditor had not reviewed the offset audits as he did not want to combine it with the offset audit. The offset deals reviewed include purchases of the Army, IAF and Navy. The auditor has also received detailed responses from the defence ministry on some of its observations.

The CAG separated its review of the offset deals from the Rafale report on IAF acquisitions as these offsets included Army and Navy, reports the Times of India.

In its report, Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) had said that the deal struck by the Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) for the purchase of 36 French Rafale fighter jets was cheaper than the one negotiated by the United Progressive Alliance (UPA).

In the run up to the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the opposition parties, especially Congress party along with their media cronies had invented a scam out of the Rafale deal to propagate a narrative ahead of the elections. With CAG establishing that NDA government had in fact saved the taxpayers money by negotiating a better deal than UPA and a clean chit given by the Supreme Court, the opposition parties including some media had faced huge embarrassment.

The first Rafale fighter, part of the Rs 59,000 crore-36 aircraft deal with French manufacturer Dassault Aviation, will be delivered next month. French defence giant Dassault Aviation had agreed to provide all 36 fighters in a flyaway condition between 36 to 67 months from the date of signing of the IGA (inter-governmental agreement) in 2016.

Supreme Court dismisses P Chidambaram’s interim bail plea in CBI case, deems it “infructuous” after his arrest

In a major setback for the UPA stalwart and the former finance minister P Chidambaram, the Supreme Court of India dismissed anticipatory bail plea filed by him against Delhi High Court order denying him protection from CBI arrest in the INX Media case. The court said that after Chidambaram’s arrest, the matter is now “infructuous”.

However, the court has granted liberty to the UPA era finance minister for approaching an appropriate court for regular bail. A bench comprising of Justices Bhanumati and A S Bopanna observed that the petition for anticipatory bail has become “infructuous” as Chidambaram has already been arrested and remanded to CBI custody. Granting Chidambaram apply for a regular bail at relevant courts, the bench added that the trial court must not be influenced by the observations made by the Delhi High Court.

Apart from the INX Media case, the Enforcement Directorate filed another case for alleged money laundering transactions. The court is separately considering the bail plea moved in the ED case. Chidambaram’s lawyer Sibal had alleged that the ED had leaked documents to the media. However, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta rejected the claims saying his client ED did not leak the said affidavit.

Representing P Chidambaram, Senior advocates Kapil Sibal and Dr AM Singhvi contended that the petition didn’t become infructuous as the petitioner was arrested when his petition was pending in the SC. They argued that the CBI could not have arrested him on August 21 as his petition was listed to be heard on August 23. Both Sibal and Singhvi argued that the court has the authority to restore the status quo ante with regard to P Chidambaram.

However, the bench remained unmoved by their persuasions and upheld its order to reject the petition.

The INX Media case relates to discrepancies and alleged shady dealings in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance given to the media group for international investment funds worth several hundred crores. Chidambaram was the finance minister at that time. As per reports, the ED is hopeful of getting Chidambaram’s custody following which he could be questioned on the source of money through which his son and Congress MP Karti Chidambaram bought various properties in India and abroad including a tennis club in Spain, cottages in the UK. These properties are reportedly valued at Rs 54 crore.

Inmate at Tihar jail branded with ‘Allah’, authorities claim its an attempt to vitiate communal atmosphere

0

A prisoner in Tihar jail has alleged that the superintendent and his associates tortured him and branded ‘Allah’ on his back with lime. The matter is currently being investigated. However, the additional IG at Tihar claimed that the prisoner had done this to himself deliberately in order to vitiate the communal atmosphere inside the jail.

The jail authorities have registered a complaint against the prisoner. Meanwhile, he has been shifted to a high-security cell. The Police are also trying to find out how did the lime with which the crime was supposedly committed find its way into the jail. The CCTV footage is also being looked at for clues into the entire series of events.

Coincidentally, the prisoner is lodged at jail no. 3, the same where Afzal Guru, convicted for the terrorist attack in the Parliament and consequently hanged to death for it, was lodged at.

This isn’t the first time something like this has happened at Tihar jail. In April, an inmate, Nabbir, had branded himself with the ‘Om’ symbol and accused the prison authorities of torture. Later, with the help of CCTV footage and other evidence, it was discovered that the inmate had gotten his associate to brand him with the symbol. He had done so with the intention of falsely implicating the authorities.

In a major crackdown against corruption by the government, 22 senior government officials in the Finance Ministry sacked

Continuing its war against corruption, the Narendra Modi led NDA government has decided to sack 22 senior government officials of the rank of superintendent in the finance ministry following serious corruption charges against them.

According to the reports, the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has compulsorily retired 22 senior government officials in “public interest” on charges of corruption and misconduct under Rule 56 (J).

In a similar move, the government had retired 27 high ranking IRS officers in June this year, including 12 officers from CBDT, also on charges of corruption, harassment, bribe and extortion in June this year.

The officers fired by CBIC include KK Uikey, SR Parate, Kailash Verma, KC Mandal, MS Damor, RS Gogiya, Kishore Patel from various central GST zones. They all were at the level of a superintendent. The sacked officers included officials dealing with Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Customs in various zones across of the country.

A statement by the CBDT said that “the CBIC has compulsorily retired yet another 22 senior officers of the rank of Superintendent/AO under Fundamental Rule 56 (J) in the public interest, due to corruption and other charges and CBI traps”.

Reportedly, sources at the Finance Ministry said that the decision to sack corrupt officers is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s promise to clean up the tax administration so that honest tax-payers are not harassed. The latest batch of officers who were sacked were dealing with Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Customs from across various zones of the country.

The Central Board of Indirect Tax and Customs (CBIC) has maintained that the tainted officers have been expelled from the service in the public interest.

“The CBIC has compulsorily retired yet another 22 senior officers of the rank of Superintendent/AO under Fundamental Rule 56 (J) in the public interest, due to corruption and other charges and CBI traps,” an official said.

Last month, days after sacking a handful of tainted officers from service, the Modi government passed a directive to all departments and ministries to prepare monthly reports identifying officials facing charges of corruption and other wrongdoing against them.

Sindhu creates history at Basel, Sai Praneeth rewrites it after 36 years

On Sunday, Indians were glued to their TV sets as PV Sindhu stepped onto the court for the 3rd time in a BWF World Championship final. She had won 2 Bronzes and 2 Silvers in previous editions in 2013, 2014, 2017 and 2018 respectively; However, the Gold had remained elusive. Sindhu has a host of heartbreaks in the finals, winning Silver at 2 previous editions of world championships, Asian Games and Olympics. But she left behind all the baggage this time.

As the backhand lift from Nozomi Okuhara found the net, Sindhu scripted history at Basel, Switzerland. 21-7, 21-7 screamed the scoreboard on court 1 at St. Jakobshalle Arena, Basel as the Tiranga went up and a teary-eyed Sindhu looked at it chanting Jana Gana Mana.

After a lull in 2018, Indian Badminton has started picking up in the 2nd half of 2019. Sindhu has had some good runs before coming to World Championships at Basel. At Indonesia open, she made it to final, losing to Yamaguchi. In Japan open, she again lost to Yamaguchi, but this time in the QF. She pulled out of Thailand open to recuperate for World Championships. The road to final has not been easy at Basel either. Though her nemesis since last 3 months, Yamaguchi, was knocked out in 2nd round, PV Sindhu met Tai Tzu Ying in the quarters.

For the uninitiated and non-Badminton fans, consider her as the Virat Kohli of Women’s singles, who almost never fails. After dropping the first game, 12-21, everyone thought that the ghost of the past is back to haunt her. However, Sindhu came back stronger and took the 2nd 23-21 in a nail-biting finish to level scores. In the decider, she started strong but it was always on the tenterhooks. Finally, it was Sindhu who held her nerves and got better of TTY, winning the game and match 12-21, 23-21, 21-19. From there on, there was no looking back. Sindhu was absolutely clinical in semis, beating Chinese Chen Yu Fei 21-7, 21-14.

The final was a complete bloodbath. Okuhara had played a marathon just the day before against the Thai player Intanon while Sindhu had wrapped up in 41 minutes. Okuhara was not in her elements and looked zoned out. She was trying to shorten the rallies, smashing overhead shuttles from the backcourt and tapping from midcourt to Sindhu’s hands.

Sindhu had a plan from the beginning, playing on all 4 corners, setting up the court and going for the kill at the opportune moment. The smashes from the backcourt and rushing to the net to tap absolutely stamped her authority on the court. Sindhu didn’t allow Okuhara to come up with a counter as she kept her on her toes. Sindhu lost a few points in the middle but for every single point she lost, she compensated it by earning 4. The match was over before Okuhara could understand what hit her.

With the win, Sindhu has put a lot of doubters to rest who questioned her big match credentials and termed her a choker. With the Gold at World Championship yesterday, Sindhu has equalled the best-ever record by any Women’s Singles player, Zhang Ning of China, who also won 1 Gold, 2 Silver and 2 Bronze. And Sindhu is just 24. She is just getting started.

While Sindhu created history, another Indian shuttler from Men’s Singles department, Sai Praneeth, rewrote it after 36 years. It was Prakash Padukone, who last won a World Championship medal at Copenhagen in 1983 in MS category. Like Sindhu, even Sai’s game had picked up in the 2nd half of this year. He had a couple of good runs in the super series events before coming to Basel. At Japan open, he went up to the Semis before falling to Kento Momota. In Thailand, he went up to the quarters, again falling to a Japanese Kanta Tsuneyama. In Basel, Sai has beaten the world No 4 and world no 6 consecutively, both Indonesians, to win the Bronze. Had he been not in Momota’s half, he may even have changed the colour of the medal.

Again, for non-Badminton fan readers, if TTY in the earlier example was Virat Kohli of WS Badminton, Momota is Kohli + Rohit Sharma + Jos Buttler. Consider this, on his way to win Gold, Momota has not dropped a single game. Nobody except Prannoy has gone past 10+ in both the games against him. Prannoy was 18-21, 12-21. Momota won the final 21-9. 21-3. If Sindhu’s was an annihilation, this was induced hypoxia.

So to fall to Momota isn’t a shame. Sai did brilliant and should hold his chin up. He was in a draw, which realistically speaking, would have been difficult for Momota as well, as he hates playing Indonesians. But, like Momota, even Sai has not dropped a game till Semis winning straight games against both higher-ranked Indonesians in pre-QF and QF. It’s a commendable feat. It’s only onward and upward for him from here.

After a blistering 2017 and a forgettable 2018, Indian Badminton seems to be in the right hands and picking up before Tokyo, 2020. The Koreans seem to be doing something right with Indian Badminton. Their methods have been similar to Mulyo Handoyo, the man behind the spectacular result of 2017. The Koreans themselves have said that the standard of players is very good. All they are working on is the mental aspect. With Gopichand being the guiding light, Koreans focus on the right area and the results coming in, we can hope for a blockbuster at Tokyo 2020.

Telangana: Gandhi statue vandalised, pro-Pakistan slogans written in Nizamabad

In a shocking incident in Nizamabad district of Telangana, a statue of Mahatma Gandhi has been desecrated by painting it black and garlanding it with a paper written with slogans denouncing India and hailing Pakistan on Sunday by some unidentified persons.

According to a report in The Hindu, the incident took place at Gundaram village of Nizamabad district when unidentified assailants blackened Gandhi statue and hung a paper on the statue with pro-Pakistan slogans written on it.

Reportedly, the police officials suspect that a newly emerged outfit belonging to a ‘particular community’ is behind the attack on the statue. The outfit had undertaken activities in the name of educating poor children and imparting awareness on fitness in certain minority areas in the district.

Recently, the police had arrested three persons belonging to this group on the complaint of municipal authorities that they had built illegal sheds to carrying out their activities.

According to the report in The Hindu, Circle Inspector of Police R Raghu said the police rushed to the village, located a few km away from the district headquarters Nizamabad and launched an investigation to identify the culprits.

“We are probing whether the outfit which was mentioned earlier has any connection with the defacing of the Gandhi statue. It is a serious issue and hence inquiry is being done from all angles,” he said.

OpIndia had reached out to Nizamabad police station but the police officials were reluctant to provide any information regarding the accused of the desecration incident. We shall update the report once we get a response from the Nizamabad rural police.

BJP Delhi spokesperson releases audio tape exposing Pakistan’s nefarious agenda to embarrass India on a global platform

BJP Delhi spokesperson Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga today took to Twitter to expose how the anti-India protests in Paris are sponsored by Pakistan and they are even paying the people to come to the protests.

Bagga, who has earlier taken on anti-India people in his own unique and inimitable style, decided to expose the Pakistani agenda when he came across a number which spoke urged people to gather in large numbers in Paris. He posted a call recording where he called up the organisers of the anti-India protests in Paris when PM Modi is visiting for attending the G7 summit.

As can be heard in the above recording, Bagga pretends to be one Abdul calling a lady who had posted a poster where a protest against PM Modi was planned in Paris. She confirms that she lives in France but is originally from Pakistan. “Abdul” then says that he is also from Lahore, Pakistan, and would like to join the protests. The lady says that he is welcomed since they want more and more people to join the protests. “Abdul” then asks whether they could be compensated for coming to the protests.

The lady declines to pay them but offer food in return of attending the protests. “Abdul” then negotiates with the lady that one of his Pakistani friend of his attended the protest organised by her and he is getting paid for the same. She relented and said that if he gets more people to attend, he may be paid for the same. She agreed to pay 2 USD for attending the protest. “Abdul” then insists that since his “Pakistani friend” is getting paid 5 UDS, 2 USD is too low. Eventually, the lady agrees to pay 5 USD at the end of the protests.

This call by Bagga just exposes how the anti-India protests following the abrogation of Article 370 are Pakistan sponsored to embarrass India on global platform. How Pakistan is indulging in nefarious tactics to defame India. Ironically, Pakistan has been isolated by the international community which has firmly stood by India on its internal decision to abrogate Article 370.

After the abrogation of Article 370, I remembered Iqbal, the beautiful shawl I bought, and his smiling face

The Doordarshan ground of Ahmedabad is normally a deserted place where a couple of driving learners can be found along with a few stray cattle. But the same dreary place comes to life during the Navratri period not because of the Garba revelry but for the iconic Bengali Durga Puja Pandal. And, yes.. the ground also witnesses some sporadic handloom handicraft fairs scattered through the year.

I still vividly remember one such handloom exhibition meant to promote the local looming skills of artisans from different states. It was one such scorching afternoon of June 2013 and I was coming back from my workplace which was near to that field. The big banners of beautiful sari-clad models compelled me to get down from the vehicle and to have a look of this happening place.  I strolled through the various stalls only to find that it was beyond my human competence to pierce through the thick crowd at most of the counters. Most of the tables showcasing the exclusive handwoven fabric had a minimum of 3 layers of customers asking for their choice to the shopkeepers.

The handloom saris and dress materials at the stalls of Punjab, Bengal, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh were packed like a can of sardines. The stalls of Madhubani painting of Bihar, Worli Art of Maharashtra, Kalamkari sari of Andhra Pradesh and mural canvas of Kerala were not approachable for a frail mortal being like me. That’s why I was giving a miss to almost all the hot favourite counters of the exhibition. Due to the crowd and commotion, there was absolutely no point in continuing, as such I had come till the end of one aisle of the exhibition so, I decided to go back to my car and run the AC at the maximum strength due to the signature hot-humid summer afternoon of Ahmedabad.

I decided to take the exit route and as I took the left turn, I was greeted by a tall bearded handsome fellow named Iqbal. He insisted that I visit his adjacent stall exhibiting Kashmiri items. To my great dismay, not a soul was there at his stall. But, as I had become a bit disenchanted by the whole scenario, I immediately asked for his apology. Otherwise, also, I was getting late and was not interested to appreciate or buy any woollens especially pashmina shawls at 43 degree Celsius of  Gujarat. But, Iqbal again insisted politely with a helpless smile, I could not decline his request this time and unwillingly went to his counter. The shop was beautifully decorated with some of the choicest handicraft items and clothes. As I was wearing a sari that day, he thought I may like his crape sari collection with awesomely intricate embroidery.

I told him that it was not a good idea to wear crapes in this season but he was quick to say, “Madamji, the season of the sun would ultimately be followed by winters. You can wear them then.” But I replied, “In Gujarat, we have 10 months of summer and 2 months of spring. That’s it.” And then we both broke into hearty laughter. He, being a true salesman, was audacious enough to ask me to buy a Pashmina shawl. I quipped, “Have you gone crazy? A person, who is not ready to buy the crêpe sarees due to the climatic condition will buy a pashmina shawl from you? He said, Yes!!! “because, pashmina is not just a piece of clothing but an asset to cherish for a lifetime, an investment for the future generation”.

I was aware of the knack of the pushy selling tactics of the shopkeepers yet, I did not reveal what I was truly thinking. I asked the price of a black shawl which was hanging in the corner. He said, that that was the best piece he had in the stall as it was prepared by his mother. He removed the hanger from the shawl and handed that to me.

It was undoubtedly divine to touch and feel. It had an intricate all-over ‘jaal’ design with multicolour threads. I could not resist my temptation to buy that. I again asked for the price, pat came the reply from Iqbal “8000 rupees”. “That is expensive,” I said. “ Who will buy such expensive this stuff especially meant for chilly winters, and unsuitable for places having warm temperatures all around the year”? His reply to my question surprised me. He said, “no Madamji..that is not the case, many people from Hindustan buy our shawls and use them”.

I was literally seething with anger after hearing his reply. I consider myself a true nationalist to the degree of being labelled as hyper-nationalist on various platforms of social media by the so-called “liberals”. I retorted him, “what do you mean by people of Hindustan? Aren’t you a Hindustani as well? Aren’t you taking part in this exhibition which is a government of India project? Aren’t other shopkeepers present here, Hindustanis? Have you taken any visa for visiting here? Why don’t you have the same emotion of Indianess as me or as rest of us?”

Iqbal was not prepared for such ballistic warfare with his customer. He tried his level best to undo the damage. Perhaps, he was in the habit of uttering the same sentence quite often and people did not take any exception to his stance. But with me having a raw deal was not possible. He tried to placate things by saying, “Madamji, don’t get me wrong, I’m not good in Hindi. I might have hurt your sentiments for which I’m genuinely sorry. I offer my heartfelt apology to you. What I meant was, that India is a vast country with different climatic setups”.

“In Gujarat, you may feel the heat today but tomorrow, you may visit Darjeeling, Shimla or Munnar and then you can flaunt your prized possession of pashmina at all these exquisite places.” I gave him the benefit of doubt and tried hard to maintain my surface calm though there were ripples of anger still inside me. I again cautioned him by saying “please be mindful in future. After all, you are also participating with the choicest artisan of the entire country at the same venue, thus no scope of discrimination.”

Coming back to the shawl, I again tried to bargain for the best price, he said, “Chalo, Madamji, aap Rs. 7,500 de dena khushi khushi”. He then explained how earning a livelihood was so difficult in the Kashmiri valley. He said, “we the male members of the family have nothing worthwhile to do, our ladies make shawls and paper-mache curio pieces and other handicraft items and we sell them outside that’s it!”

He then said machine/power looms have taken the place of manual labour, producing items at a 50% lower price. He added that the shawl is the last shawl made by his mother as her eyesight got seriously affected after making it. It takes approximately 6 month‘s to complete the embroidery of one shawl. Ladies lose their eyesight while preparing 2-3 shawls like this, while machines can make and complete such embroidery in just 2-4 days.

Iqbal was continuously speaking about the prevailing hopeless condition of the valley. At that moment, he wasn’t some pushy salesman, but an unprivileged-brokenhearted Kashmiri young man. At last, he said, “Madamji take this shawl with you and give the amount what you find appropriate”. His words evoked a mixed feeling in me. Meanwhile, Iqbal was clueless about my inner thought process, he was disappointed with my stony silence, he again offered me to take the shawl and offer the price suitable to me.

I was quick to pay 8000 rupees through my debit card. I added, “Please convey my regards to your beloved Ammi and also, let her know that customers love her pursuit of creativity. Iqbal was ecstatic. Looking at his beaming face, I asked for his leave and wished him ”Allah hafiz”. He returned my courtesy by bidding goodbye with a sheen in his eyes.

Though I had bought a beautiful shawl, I was not happy, I left that exhibition with a heavy heart and with many unanswered questions in my mind.

Why Kashmir doesn’t allow any kind of foreign or mainland Indian investment? Why there aren’t any globally standardised educational institution? Why is unemployment so rampant? Why are the Kashmiri youths being pushed into drugs out of depression and seclusion? Why do the pro-separatist Hurriyat leaders have the power to issue shutdown calls every now and then and disrupting the academic life and daily business? If a Kashmiri woman marries outside her community, why does she lose her status as a Kashmiri and all her rights to property in Kashmir? Why did the Kashmiri Pandits have to suffer genocide and subsequent exodus? Under what circumstances, children at the tender age instead of carrying schoolbags start pelting stones at our army men? What was the rationale behind imposing section 35(A) which debars the fellow citizens of other states from purchasing real estate properties in Kashmir? Why is this beautiful valley reduced to a ghetto of helpless natives?

Perhaps, the answer to most of the questions is only one and that is, the presence of article 370, which forbids Kashmir to a assimilate with the mainland India & making the state completely deprived of development and prosperity. The special status of Kashmir has proved to be a bane rather than a boon.

Iron Man of India, Sardar Patel did a commendable job in unifying 562 independent princely states & kingdoms into India. While the rest of the kingdoms had no problem with mainland India after the merger, Kashmir was treated as a separate entity. Kashmir became a wound with a toxic puss inside as it could never become a true part of India due to Art. 370. Ever wondered why the other princely states didn’t have any problem with the merger, and why did Kashmir have all the disgruntlement? This is simple as they didn’t have any special provisions or special status in the name of some complicated article 370 or section 35(A) bestowed upon them to isolate them.

Finally, the big day came and this historic mistake was undone with an announcement on the 5 August 2019 that the jinxed article 370 is abrogated and the state of J & K is bifurcated. This temporary provision was bound to go one day. Good riddance! With this news, the face of Iqbal suddenly surfaced into my memory. I visualised him smiling with joy in welcoming new dawn where from now on, he and many other promising youths like him will have a sustained source of an income through a host of buzzing economic activities.

Former PM Manmohan Singh continues to have Z+ security, SPG protection replaced with CRPF cover

The central government has made some changes in the security cover provided to former PM Manmohan Singh. As per reports, the SPG security provided to Dr Manmohan Singh will now be replaced with CRPF staff.

As per reports, the security cover provided to former Prime Ministers is subjected to periodical reviews and as per the review reports submitted by IB and other agencies, the government has decided to replace the SPG security with CRPF. The former PM will continue to have Z+ level security for his protection.

The MHA, that is responsible for the security of all former PMs and VVIPS, has stated that the security review is periodical and professional exercise and it is done on the basis of threat perception that is based on an assessment undertaken by security agencies.

MHA has clarified that the former PM will continue to have a Z+ security cover and only the SPG staff will be replaced with CRPF.

Earlier in June, former prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh had written an angry letter to the Prime Minister’s Office and Home Minister Amit Shah after the centre followed the existing rules to turn down a request from former PM to retain his full 14-member staff.

The government had reduced the size of secretarial staff to 5 from the earlier 14.

Mayawati slams Congress and opposition parties over Kashmir visit, says govt should be given time

BSP supremo Mayawati has slammed the Congress and other opposition parties for their attempted visit to Kashmir. Criticising their intention behind the visit Mayawati stated that the opposition leaders should rather have waited and given the government some time to normalise the situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

Taking to Twitter, the BSP leader, who had supported the central government’s decision over Article 370 and bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir slammed the Congress and other parties for trying to politicise a delicate situation.

Mayawati stated that Babasaheb Ambedkar was never in support of Article 370 because he was for establishing India’s sovereignty and was a believer of equality. She stated that this was the reason she and her party had supported the government over the decision.

She further stated that the government’s step has come 69 years after India’s constitution was implemented and it will take some time for the situation to be normal there. She asserted that even the Supreme Court has stated that the government should be given some time to handle the situation.

Mayawati added further that in this situation, it was not appropriate for the Congress and other opposition parties to go to Kashmir and attempt to politicise the situation. She further asserted that the parties should have waited and thought over their actions before going to Kashmir.

It is notable here that Mayawati was one of the prominent regional leaders who had supported the government’s decision regarding Article 370 despite being a part of the opposition.

Andhra CM and YSRCP chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, BJD’s Naveen Pattnaik were the other party leaders outside the NDA with considerable parliament representation that had supported the government and had contributed to the bills being passed in both houses with an overwhelming majority.
