A month after Congress govt comes to power, Tribal child drinks insecticide after being denied food at ration shop

0

In a horrific incident, a tribal child in Madhya Pradesh consumed insecticide out of hunger. The incident happened in Ratlam district in the state, according to reports, and the child is in critical condition.

The incident happened on 31st December, when a 7 year boy consumed insecticide, as he was frustrated due to denied wheat by a ration shop. According to the family of the child, he was going to the Amba Para society to get wheat for last 15 days carrying the ration card of the family, but the ration shop was refusing to him wheat, saying they have no stock. Disturbed with this continuous refusal, the child consumed insecticide. He was immediately rushed to a hospital, and his situation is stable at present.

DC of Ratlam district Ruchika Chauhan has ordered an enquiry into the incident, and has formed a team including the tehsildar and food inspector to investigate the matter. On the other hand, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has also taken the matter seriously and it has set up an inquiry into the same.

After the Congress formed government in three states after the recent elections, they had announced waiver of farm loans. But that has not ended the distress of farmers, with several incidents of farmers committing suicide due to the burden of loan emerging in the last couple of weeks from these states. Now, this incident indicates that the widespread corruption that was prevalent earlier in the public distribution system may have made a come back along with Congress government.

Akhilesh Yadav under CBI lens for violating HC order and granting 14 leases as Mining Minister without e-tender: Reports

The CBI had earlier announced in an FIR filed on the second of January that it will examine the role of former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Akhilesh Yadav, and his former Cabinet colleague Gayatri Prajapati in a case of illegal mining.

Now, CBI sources are reported to have elaborated on the allegations against the Samajwadi party supremo. CBI sources have reportedly said that during Akhilesh Yadav’s tenure as mining minister, 14 leases were granted in Hamirpur without e-tenders in violation of an Allahabad High Court order.

On Saturday, the CBI searched 14 locations including the premises of former IAS officers in UP and Delhi. The public servants are accused of allowing illegal mining between 2012-2016 and illegally renewing licence despite National Green Tribunal ban. The officers are accused of allowing theft of minerals, money extortion from leaseholders and drivers. Yadav, along with being the state’s chief minister, also held the mining portfolio during 2012-13. He was succeeded by Gayatri Prajapati. Gayatri Prajapati was arrested in 2017 after a Chitrakoot woman accused him of rape.

Akhilesh had earlier alleged that it was a case of political vendetta and warned the BJP that similar actions may be taken against them in the future. “Samajwadi Party is making efforts to win maximum Lok Sabha seats. Those who want to stop us, have the CBI with them. Once the Congress did CBI probe, and I was questioned. If the BJP is doing all this, the CBI will question me, I will answer (them). But, the people are ready to give an answer to the BJP,” Akhilesh was reported to have said.

“Why is the CBI conducting raids. Whatever they want to ask, they can ask me. However, the BJP should remember that the culture it is leaving behind, it may have to face it in the future,” he added.

BSP supremo Mayawati claimed that the BJP was using the CBI to target Akhilesh Yadav due to the SP-BSP alliance in Uttar Pradesh. She stated, “The CBI raids and later the threat of quizzing by the CBI in a mining scam is nothing but political animosity of the BJP. Such petty politics and political conspiracy are not new for the BJP. The people of the country have understood it and they will teach the BJP a lesson in the Lok Sabha polls.”

“The day news of the SP-BSP top leadership meeting came out, the BJP government used the CBI and raids were conducted in an old mining scam and the news of quizzing Akhilesh Yadav was deliberately spread. Is it not an action to defame the SP-BSP alliance?” she added.

Many leaders of the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ are battling corruption cases in the Courts. Blaming it all on political vendetta has been their preferred mode of defence thus far. The mother-son duo of the Congress party, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, are out on bail in the National Herald case. Lalu Prasad Yadav has been convicted in the Fodder Scam.

Finance Minister during the UPA regime, P Chidambaram, has also been knocking at the door of Courts to grant him protection from arrest. He was today interrogated by the ED in connection with the INX money laundering case. His son, Karti Chidambaram, was arrested by agencies last year in February for allegedly lobbying for the Mukerjees, in order to get FIPB clearance from Finance Ministry, which at the time was under his father. The ED had also attached properties and bank deposits of Karti Chidambaram worth around Rs.54 crores in connection with the case, in October last year.

it appears that the alleged crimes committed by the politicians opposing Prime Minister Narendra Modi is finally coming home to roost.

‘Journalists’ of the Congress ecosystem raise a stink about Modi govt’s 10% reservation for the poor

In a historic move just ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the Narendra Modi-led NDA government has decided to give ten per cent reservation in jobs and higher education for those belonging to the poor.

The reservation which was approved by the Union cabinet today will not disturb the existing 50 per cent reservation. Reportedly, the Union government will amend Articles 15 and 16, which has provisions against discrimination and equal opportunity to implement the new reform.

The new ‘surgical strike’ conducted by the Narendra Modi government to provide reservations for existing unreserved people has been receiving a resounding welcome. The historic decision by the Narendra Modi government seems to have hurt some members of the Congress supported Lutyens ecosystem, as they have already begun propagating false narrative pertaining to the new reform.

The Lutyens cabal that often expresses fake empathy towards the poor and downtrodden when it chooses their convenience has now been citing caste dynamics and poll arithmetic as the reason behind this historic decision. ‘Journalists’ of the Congress ecosystem who often indulge in fake narrative propagation are now perplexed after Prime Minister Modi surprised them with a positive narrative.

Barkha Dutt, one of the oldest serving member of the Lutyens cabal rushed to pass her judgements regarding the new reservation policy. She first called it an ‘upper caste’ reservation and called it unconstitutional despite the fact that the new policy is yet to face judicial scrutiny.

Radia Tape famed self-proclaimed journalist and one of the founding editors of The Wire, MK Venu looked worried as the new move by the BJP may benefit the party electorally in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

Sidharth Varadarajan, the ultra-left scribe, who is not even an Indian citizen called the reform which benefits crores of poor, underprivileged as a ‘bogus proposal’ and accused the government of being desperate.

Sagarika Ghose, a journalist sympathetic to Congress expressed her anguish after PM Modi promised to empower upper class through new reservation policy. She questioned the rationale of providing quotas to the needy unreserved population.

Swati Chaturvedi, a troll masquerading as a journalist claimed that it was another ‘jumla’ and implementation of such reform is difficult.

Rohini Singh, known for her fondness to Samajwadi Party and also associated with fake news website The Wire said that the government lacked any intent to provide reservation to economically weaker sections.

The move for 10% reservations is likely to woo back people from the Upper Castes who had deserted the party. Their support will be absolutely essential to secure a victory in the elections this year.

10% reservation for financially backward and more: 2019 sees an aggressive BJP setting the narrative

The Narendra Modi government has rung in the new year with an aggressive intent to decimate the opposition’s long-drawn shenanigans of portraying the government in the bad light. It has shown the will to systematically demolish all the concocted allegations of corruption levelled on it by the opposition. Continuing its attack, it has now thrown a monkey wrench for the opposition by expressing its intent to bring in the reservation of about 10% for the economically backward classes.

Learning from the setback it received in the recent defeats in the Assembly elections 2018, the Modi government has visibly recalibrated its election campaign policies. From being on the defensive against the opposition’s accusations, PM Modi and his ministers have decided to take the saddle and charter his own path for the big battle in 2019. The recent announcement of offering reservations to economically backward classes is hailed as one such political masterstroke to meet that end.

The BJP has finally found its foot for the upcoming electoral battle. Post-election defeats in December 2018, the saffron party realised that it can no longer yield the narrative on a platter to the opposition by pussyfooting on the outlandish assertations made by Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party. The mealy-mouth approach embraced by the BJP regarding Rafale Deal, farm loan waivers not only rendered it helpless against the increasingly defiant Congress but also emboldened the cadres of the Indian National Congress.

The attacks intensified and the BJP ministers were caught in the crosshairs of Congress politicians who wasted no opportunity to cash in on the BJP’s non-committal approach. However, the defeats in the elections struck a sobering realisation to the BJP-high command. The subsequent election speeches given by Modi dwelled more on what his government has done for empowering the farmers and how Congress has been fooling the farmers from years with their election lollipop trickeries like granting farm loan waivers.

BJP top brass spoke in unison about Congress’ past betrayal with farmers. The messaging had coherency. Even on the Rafale deal, the hobby-horse for Rahul Gandhi and the Congress to portray the government in neck-deep corruption was dealt with finesse by the senior BJP leaders. They piggybacked their claims about the Rafale deal by citing the Supreme Court’s validation of having no procedural or pricing violations in procuring the Rafale jets.

Arun Jaitley, the Finance Minister of the country eloquently demolished in the parliament all the misgivings the Congress party had raised about the Rafale Deal. It appeared that Congress and its president Rahul Gandhi were taken off-guard by Jaitley’s ruthless onslaught. If this was not enough, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman pummeled the already battered Congress to bits by her gamely defence of the jets deal and slamming Congress for jeopardising the country’s security by inordinately delaying the fighter aircraft deal.

Now, mounting the counter-attack on Congress, the BJP started attacking Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi for the National Herald case in which there occurred alleged involvement of transfer of the government property worth crores for just 50 lakhs to a trust owned by the Gandhis. Modi’s speeches and BJP’s pressers also started seeking identities of “Mrs Gandhi” and the “Italian lady’s son R” mentioned by the AgustaWestland middleman Christian Michel in his deposition to the CBI and the ED.

The Congress was already battling from the body blow it received from the SC’s Rafale verdict. Amidst this, a ruthless and aggressive BJP severely hamstrung the Congress and its ecosystem by engaging in an all-frontal attack. With the Congress already having peaked at their narrative, in the crucial months leading up to the 2019 elections, they don’t have too many issues to bank upon.

This Modi-Shah’s turf. They are known to set the narrative and dominate it. The concerted attempts have laid the foundation for the BJP. While the opposition continues to flounder, the BJP  which is in a pole position may well have struck the last straw on the camel’s back by offering 10% reservations to the economically backward upper class. It has already started causing excessive hand-wringing among the usual suspects.

Madhya Pradesh: “Congress deviated from tradition”, BJP to field candidate for state assembly speaker

The Bharatiya Janata Party, currently sitting in the opposition in Madhya Pradesh has on Monday announced to contest for the Assembly speaker post, even as the ruling Congress’ candidate filed his nomination for it, and is set to field former minister and Harsud MLA Vijay Shah as their candidate for the post.

While CM Kamal Nath was okay with BJP’s decision to file its candidate a state minister said he was hopeful that the opposition party (BJP) will withdraw its candidate as the state had the tradition of electing the speaker unanimously.

The election for the post will be conducted on Tuesday.

The Congress’ MLA from Goregaon, NP Prajapati who has filed his nomination with the assembly secretariat would have to contest for the post opposite BJP’s candidate if the latter does not withdraw its nomination.

Vijay Shah, accompanied by former chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and other BJP leaders, also filed his nomination papers at the Assembly secretariat alleging that the Congress “deviated from the tradition in appointing the pro tem speaker”.

“Democracy is run by tradition. Madhya Pradesh has a long history of tradition. But, Congress has deviated from the established traditions. The senior-most MLA (in the newly elected Assembly) should have been appointed as speaker, irrespective of his/her party,” BJP’s MP unit chief Rakesh Singh told reporters at the state party headquarters here.

He pointed out that newly-elected Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath, the senior-most member of Parliament, was the Lok Sabha’s pro tem speaker.

Though welcoming the BJP’s decision to field its candidate for the speaker’s post, Kamal Nath showing his annoyance on the allegations meted out at his party for deviating from traditions said, he does not want any lessons on the issue from them (BJP).

Meanwhile, state Public Relations Minister P C Sharma was hopeful that the BJP will withdraw its candidate. “It has been a tradition in MP to elect the speaker unanimously. I hope the BJP will withdraw its candidate,” Sharma said.

Madhya Pradesh victory had not come easily to the Congress as BJP had given it a tough fight with securing 109 seats and not letting the Congress reach the majority mark. The Congress got 114 seats out of the total of 230 seats.

Kisan Kumbh: BJP to reach out to farmers across the country ahead of 2019 elections

After losing the assembly elections in various states, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is trying to get back the support of the farmers ahead of the crucial Lok Sabha elections. In order to capitalise the anger of farmers’ against Congress governments in various states, the BJP has planned several Kisan rallies across the country.

According to a report in DNA, the BJP which lost the assembly elections in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh to Congress, now intends to get back the support of farmers by organising various rallies and events to woo farmers across the country ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

As per reports, in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP is organising a workshop for farmers in Beniganj. BJP Kisan Morcha workers have reached out to thousands of farmers in the state and added 3200 new members to the group. 12 thousand farmers have reportedly given ‘appreciation letters’ to the state government for its pro-farmer steps.

The Congress had promised a series of SOPs to the farmers during in the recent assembly elections in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. The Congress party which went on to secure victory across all the three states is now facing with severe protests in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh for failure to fulfil the promise of loan waivers. The BJP which had lost the amidst huge populist promises of the Congress is now set to capitalise the farmers’ anger against the Congress ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

Reportedly, the BJP has now decided to bring back the farmers into its fold by organising a two-month event to address farmer issues. BJP Kisan Morcha will organise farmers’ programs throughout the country in January and February. The party will give information regarding various schemes of Narendra Modi government and through the Kisan Kumbh, it has decided to publicise the achievements of the BJP government.

In the month of February, a national convention of the BJP Kisan Morcha has also been planned at Prayagraj. BJP will launch “Mati Tilak Partigya Campaign” at the national convention and this campaign will be run across the country.

Rahul Gandhi led Congress which came to power in various states promising several sops of loan waivers, high MSP to the farmers seems to have started on a very bad note. The politics of false promises of loan-waiver by the Congress party has already taken three lives in Madhya Pradesh.

Addition to this, rumours of another loan-waiver scam has been brewing in the state of Rajasthan as farmers have accused Congress of involving in a huge scam after thousands of fake names appeared in the list of beneficiaries. The Congress governments in both Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan are also facing severe outrage from the farmers within weeks of their government formation, as both governments in the respective states had created a crisis by mismanaging the supply of urea.

PM Modi had recently stated that the promises of farm loan waiver’ is a lollipop the Congress is using to deceive the farmers and his government is working to empower farmers so they do not need to take loans.

The Congress soon after assuming power in Madhya Pradesh had set in new conditions to waive-off farms loans contrary to its earlier promise of unconditional loan waiver. The Congress-JDS government in Karnataka has also fared badly in waiving off farm loans which have resulted in two deaths, while many farmers have also received repayment notices from the banks.

Anti-Modi front proceeds to commit political suicide with their opposition to 10% reservation for economically backward

With the 2019 elections looming large, the political atmosphere in the country is bustling with activity. Today, several reports have suggested that the Modi government is all set to approve a 10% reservation for the economically backward sections of the society. While some reports suggest that the reservations might be limited the upper castes, some suggest that the reservation might extend to anybody who is not a part of the current reservation structure and that means, it would include Muslims and Christians too.

Just as the news started trickling in, the mahagathbandhan, or the anti-Modi alliance’s reaction came as no surprise. The move was met with strict opposition from all quarters. However, in their bid to oppose the Modi government and every move it makes, the opposition parties have invariably shot themselves in the foot.

Asaduddin Owaisi, the AIMIM chief proceeded to make a bizarre statement. He said that reservations are meant to correct historical injustice to Dalits. He said that for poverty alleviation, the government must run various schemes but reservations are only meant for social justice.

With this statement, Owaisi, perhaps in his zeal to oppose did not realise the massive self-goal he was hitting. Owaisi has been a champion of Muslim causes and has been demanding reservations for Muslims for the longest time. Earlier, Owaisi has demanded Muslim reservations based on how ‘backward’ Muslims are.

In the past, as can be seen, he has also mentioned that reservation will break the cycle of poverty that Muslims live in. At the very outset, Owaisi seems to have contradicted himself in his opposition to 10% reservation for the economically backward.

Secondly, when Owaisi says that reservations are meant to be some sort of reparations for historical wrongs, one is also well within reason to ask Owaisi what injustice should the Muslims be given special concession for? Historically, it is a well-established fact that Muslims have heaped atrocities on other communities like Hindus, Christians, Sikhs etc. If one is to go by his logic now, Muslims would not be eligible for reservations at all. In fact, it stands to reason that for times to come, every time Owaisi brings the topic up, it is this very argument that will be used to counter him.

This move of the Modi government is set to be especially difficult for the Congress party.

In Bihar, Rahul Gandhi’s close friend and ally, Tejashwi Yadav has slammed this move by the Modi government as well. Tejashwi has taken a stand similar to Owaisi’s and said that reservations are meant to solve caste issues and not economic ones.

While RJD is playing to its Yadav and Muslim vote bank, this could spell doom for Congress. Congress has been trying to capitalise on the disenchantment of the upper caste and middle class with the Modi government which has been taking several steps towards the upliftment of Dalits and backward classes. With its ally in Bihar opposing reservation that is meant to benefit communities other than those who already have reservations, it is almost certain that the sentiment Congress is trying to capitalise on will slip away as 2019 closes in.

As far as Uttar Pradesh politics are concerned, we had reported earlier how SP, BSP and Congress were all set to indulge in shadow boxing in order to get their caste equations right. SP and BSP were to form an alliance while Congress was to pretend to fight elections alone only to form a post-poll alliance. While SP and BSP were to capitalise on the votes of the backward classes, Congress was supposed to woo to upper caste voters.

Congress has so far had confused reactions. But the undertone is that of opposition, obviously.

Interestingly, with such opposing voices, the plank of wooing upper caste votes might as well just go out of the window for Congress. The juggernaut is evident in this movie considering Congress, which has no idea how to be in the opposition, is hell-bent on opposing every move by the Modi government even if it hurts them electorally.

On the other hand, Hardik Patel, who has himself risen (or fallen, depending on your political understanding) on the plank of demanding reservation for Patels, who are upper caste, seems to be opposing this move with confused utterings.

Hardik Patel has said that this is the last arrow in Modi’s quiver and termed it a ‘jumla’. While this argument is far better than Owaisi’s, one has to wonder how his comment would be viewed by his supporters.

On one hand, he has himself agitated for reservations. On the other, instead of supporting the Modi government, he has been seen opposing this move by deriding the government who is delivering on the demand.

All said and done, and whether finally, the reservation of 10% is set to be given only to upper castes or all general category people which would include Muslims and Christians, the opposition parties are set to lose the perception battle with this.

If it is limited to upper castes, their pitch for disenchanted upper caste voters would fail. If it is meant to include Muslims and Christians, them backtracking their statements is an impossibility and for them to oppose these reservations would become even more difficult. Their only resort would be to repeatedly term this as a ‘jumla’ while the Modi government is set to win the perception battle rather squarely, leaving his detractors stammering and scampering for a legitimate reason to oppose this announcement.

Biopic on PM Modi, Vivek Anand Oberoi stuns all with his striking transformation

The first look of the biopic on Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been released. The movie stars Vivek Oberoi and has been directed by Omung Kumar. The first look posters were released in 27 languages across India.

Only a few days earlier, it was confirmed that Vivek Oberoi will feature as Narendra Modi in the movie. Shooting for the film is expected to begin in mid-January.

The Director, Omung Kumar, has biographical dramas such as Mary Kom and Sarabjit in the past. Both the movies were received very well by the public and were appreciated by critics as well.

2019 is proving to be a year for biopics. The movie on Manmohan Singh’s tenure as Prime Minister featuring Anupam Kher in the lead, The Accidental Prime Minister, is set to release on the 11th of January. Manikarnika, the movie based on the life and times of the Rani of Jhansi, is set to release on the 25th of January. Thackeray, based on the life of the late Shiv Sena supremo Balasaheb, will hit the box office on the 23rd of January.

Vivek Anand Oberoi received accolades for his striking resemblance to PM Modi in the poster.

All these movies are expected to score big at the Box Office. And one tends to think the biopic on Narendra Modi when it is released eventually will perform as well as these movies if not even better.

98.38 lakh employees benefited through Pradhan Mantri Rojgar Protsahan Yojana

Launched on 9th August 2016, with an aim to incentivise employers for employment generation, Pradhan Mantri Rojgar Protsahan Yojana (PMRPY) has benefitted as many as 98.38 lakh employees. Under the PMRPY, the Government of India pays Employer’s full contribution i.e. 12% towards EPF and EPS both (as admissible from time to time) w.e.f. 01.04.2018 for a period of three years to the new employees and to the existing beneficiaries for their remaining period of three years through EPFO.

The scheme which targets employees earning Rs 15,000 per month, provides a dual benefit. On one hand, the employer is incentivised for creating new employment and on the other hand, workers get access to social security benefits of the organised sector. As on 31st December 2018, 98.38 lakh employees and 1.21 lakh establishments have been benefited.

According to the information given by Union Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha today, Maharashtra tops the list of employees getting the benefit at 17,46,468, with total subsidised amount standing at Rs 5,47,06,12,241. It is followed by Tamil Nadu with 11,77,433 employees getting the total subsidised benefit of Rs 3,81,60,56,107. Maharashtra also tops the list of establishments getting the benefit at 14,193 followed by Tamil Nadu at 13,527.

Here is why AGP breaking away from NDA in Assam, which won’t hurt BJP’s prospects in the state

Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), which is an ally of BJP led government in Assam, has said it will walk out of the alliance, protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016 which was approved by the cabinet earlier today. Party president Atul Bora informed the media about the decision to end the alliance today. The three ministers of the party in the state government will tender their resignations soon, the party sources have said.

The Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016 seeks to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955 to make illegal migrants who are Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, eligible for citizenship. The bill was sent to a Joint Parliamentary Committee, which returned the bill today without suggesting any modification.

Although AGP and several other organisations are opposing the bill for a long time, prime minister Narendra Modi’s speech in Silchar on 4th January has triggered a fresh round of agitations. Kickstarting the campaign for Lok Sabha elections in the state, Modi had declared that government is committed to passing the bill in parliament while addressing a rally.

Assam is facing massive protests against the bill since the NDA government in centre announced it. AGP was born out of Assam Agitation demanding the deportation of illegal Bangladeshis from the state. The agitation was led by All Assam Students Union (AASU), and after the end of the agitation following the signing of the Assam Accord in 1985, the leadership of the agitation had formed the political party, Asom Gana Parishad, contested the assembly elections a few months later and won a historic victory.

Many organisations in Assam, including AASU and AGP, are opposed to the bill since they feel that it will give citizenship to illegal Hindu immigrants from Bangladesh. They maintain that all illegal Bangladeshis should be deported from Assam, without any religious bias. The bill has been labelled as a pro-Bangladeshi bill by activists and local media in Assam. It has been feared that if Hindu Bangladeshis are allowed to settle in Assam, it will be a big threat to the cultural and linguistic identity of the state, which will be taken over by Bengali language and culture. The protesters point towards Tripura as a valid example of this fear, where a similar situation has already happened. The Southern Assam is already predominantly Bengali, and the AGP and other organisations believe the same will extend to the entire state if the bill is passed.

The political fortune of AGP is currently not very good at present, and breaking the alliance will harm it more than BJP. But there has been tremendous pressure on the party to ditch BJP, given its legacy. AASU still maintains considerable influence on the party. Although AASU is not a student wing of the party, many AASU leaders consider joining AGP as the next logical step in their political career. Given the ideological position of the party against all kinds of illegal immigrants, it had become untenable for them to continue in alliance with BJP after the bill was accepted by the cabinet.

Even if AGP finally ends the alliance in Assam, the Sarbananda Sonowal led government in the state does not face any trouble. Because it has another ally, the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF). In the 126 member house, BJP has 61 MLAs, AGP has 14, while BPF has 12 MLAs. This means even without AGP, the BJP will have comfortable majority.

Ahead of Panchayat elections in the state in December 2018, massive protests were organised against the bill. But interestingly, while BJP did well in the elections and Congress improved its position considerably compared to assembly elections, AGP’s result was much below expectations. Out of more than 20000 Gram Panchayat wards, BJP had won around 9000 wards, Congress had won around 7000, while AGP had won around 1,500 seats. AGP had decided to fight the election separately over the bill, which had indicated that the alliance may not last long. This points to the possibility that although organisations have been successful in organising large-scale protests against the bill, it actually may not be an election issue for the majority of the voters, at least in rural areas. While BJP is obviously supporting the bill, Congress party has maintained a largely neutral position.

Perhaps these results of the panchayat elections encouraged the government to go ahead with the bill, fully aware that it will trigger protests and AGP will break the alliance. While AGP has been threatening to end the alliance over the bill, the BJP state leadership is maintaining that it is free to do so, and it will not hamper BJP in Lok Sabha elections.

With the bill being approved by the cabinet, huge protests have already started in the state. Today various organisations conducted demonstrations with black flags, including in Delhi. Tomorrow a state-wide bandh has been called, which is expected to be a success given that as many as 70 organisations are protesting. Although BJP will not have any trouble in getting the bill passed in Lok Sabha, it may get stuck in Rajya Sabha, where the ruling alliance do not have a majority. But even if the bill is rejected by the upper house, the protests in the state are expected to continue till the Lok Sabha elections.
