Tickets for sale: AIADMK tells party leaders to pay Rs. 25,000 as ‘application fees’ if they want to contest 2019 Lok Sabha elections

Following Punjab Congress’ footsteps of charging the ticket aspirants for the Lok Sabha elections, a fee to get the party’s nomination, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has told their party leaders that whoever are “willing” to contest parliamentary polls, have to pay Rs 25,000 when they submit their application forms for the same.

According to news agency ANI, the AIADMK has announced that party workers who are willing to contest in Lok Sabha elections can apply from February 4 to February 10 after paying Rs 25,000. All 40 constituencies (39 Tamil Nadu and 1 Puducherry) have been listed for sending applications.

However, this is not the first time, AIADMK has charged an election ticket fee from aspirants, in 2014 Lok Sabha polls, the party had charged a similar fee from the party ticket aspirants.

The Punjab Congress had also earlier issued similar notification asking the party members applying for tickets for 2019 Lok Sabha polls to pay Rs 25,000 as application fee. However, the reserved category seats would cost a sum of Rs 20,000. Punjab has 13 Lok Sabha seats including four reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates.

The instruction to charge an application fee came from All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary in-charge of Punjab and Chandigarh Asha Kumari. She has adopted this step to help the so-called cash-starved party generate funds ahead of the general elections.

It is pertinent to note here that the so-called cash-starved Punjab government, disregarding its present financial burdens and the debt strain Punjab is going through, had in October 2018, approved the purchase of a new fleet of over 400 luxury vehicles for the chief minister, his staff, cabinet ministers and bureaucrats in the state government worth Rs 80 crore.

However, this is not the first time for the Congress to charge for its election tickets. It has demanded a similar amount for the four Lok Sabha seats in Himachal Pradesh also.’

Meanwhile, AIADMK had won 37 of the 39 seats in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. This time, however, the party will be contesting national polls under new leadership for the first time in years after the death of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, who passed away in December 2016.

PM Modi lays foundation stone for more than a dozen projects in Surat, furnishes his government’s report card

0

PM Narendra Modi was in Surat today for laying the foundation stone for several developmental projects under the Smart-City initiative. He also laid the foundation stone for the extension of the terminal building at the Surat Airport. Hailing Surat, Modi said it was the first centre in the country from where Satyagraha was initiated by Mahatma Gandhi.

Referring to the global economic research report, PM Modi congratulated the people of Surat for topping the list of fastest developing cities in the world in the coming decade. He claimed the expansion of Surat Airport will boost the growth of the city and its passenger handling capacity, which is currently 4 lakh passengers per year, will be increased to 26 lakh passengers. He also said that 3 locations- Sabarmati riverfront, Shatrunjay Dam and Statue of Unity have been identified and are surveyed for building water airports at these places. Speaking about the success of UDAAN scheme 1 and 2, PM Modi said his government is working on launching UDAAN scheme 3 to connect different cities in Gujarat with each other as well as with the budding towns of the country.

Using the occasion to list down the developmental work carried out by his government in the last 4.5 years, PM Modi asserted that before BJP came to power in 2014, there were only 80 passport offices across the country and the people in town and smaller cities had to visit metro cities to apply for their passports. In 4.5 years of BJP’s governance, the number of passport offices has increased to more than 400. The government has been committed to connecting the entire country with air connectivity and has been operating at a fast pace in the past 4 years and 17 airports which were underutilised have been upgraded or are under upgradation.

Modi also said that 1 crore 30 lakh houses have been built under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and permission for around 70 lakh more houses has been sanctioned by the government. This is a significant achievement since the previous governments have had built only 25 lakh houses till 2014. Speaking about the reduced electricity bill, Modi informed that his government had distributed about 32 crore LED bulbs which effected a savings of Rs 16,500 crores in the electricity bill.

The RERA law legislated by the Modi government ensures that the hard-earned money of the poor and middle-class families do not remain stuck in infrastructure projects. Under RERA Law, 30-35 thousand builders have registered and are building homes for millions adhering to the rules, the prime minister said.

Talking about the MUDRA initiative, PM Modi said that unguaranteed loans worth Rs 7 lakh crore have been given by the government to those who were seeking funds to start their business. He also stated that about 4 crores 25 lakh people took the loan for the first time and thus the country has added 4 crores 25 lakh first generation entrepreneurs in the last 4.5 years.

Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan gets ED notice in currency smuggling case

0

Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has been issued a show-cause notice by ED for alleged violation of foreign currency rules on Wednesday. The notice was issued to him in connection with the seizure of undisclosed US Dollars on him at the Delhi airport in 2011. An official of the ED said, “A show-cause notice has been issued to Khan for the alleged violation of foreign currency rules and for embezzling two million rupees.”

The ED officials also claimed that the popular Sufi singer has been asked to respond to the notice in 45 days. The officials of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence had arrested Khan and his manager Maruf Ali Khan from the Indira Gandhi International Airport in 2011, and the undisclosed amount of USD 1.24 lakh and some other belongings were seized from them. After this, the investigating agency started inquiries under the FEMA in 2014 against Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and his associates.

The Central Agency ED had investigated cases of foreign exchange violations under FEMA, and it has already interrogated the singer about the matter. The singer has defended himself, claiming he hadn’t done anything illegal. He was carrying such a huge amount on him because he was travelling with a huge group, he had said. Born in Sufi Kawwal family, Rahat Ali Khan is a singer of Pakistani origin and has occupied stage since the age of 7. Rahat is the nephew of a well-known Sufi-singer Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan debuted as a playback singer in Bollywood with the movie ‘Paap’ in 2003. He has also been a judge on reality shows in India.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is currently investigating the case. Khan will be penalised with 300% penalty if the ED remains dissatisfied with his response. If he refuses to pay the penalty, a lookout notice is expected to be issued against the singer and he would thereby be prevented from performing anywhere in India.

Shashi Tharoor’s tweet denigrating the Kumbh ought to make us all wary

In an earlier article, I had elaborated on how propaganda works and described how Business Standard’s article associating the Kumbh with unemployment without any basis, in fact, was a classic bit of propaganda.

Now, it appears, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has decided to participate in the propaganda against Kumbh as well. In a tweet yesterday, Tharoor said, “The Ganga has to keep clean and sins have to be washed off in it as well. Everyone is naked in this confluence. Jai Ganga Maiya ki!”

The subtle insinuation that Ganga cannot be kept clean with millions of people taking dips in it is hardly lost on anyone. The elitist indignation at Sadhus and Sanyasis in saffron garb in the picture that he shared, which featured Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath, is palpable.

People on social media were not impressed with the Congress leader’s tweet either.

As I have said earlier, Propaganda succeeds by unleashing a barrage of negative/positive reportage of any particular object, occasion or phenomenon. Unless the people are made aware of the insidious designs, they will buy into the narrative that the propagandists are selling.

The Kumbh Mela is one of the most important festivals for Hindus. It unites us transcending the barriers of caste, class, creed, region and language under the banner of Dharma. Therefore, the Kumbh is anathema to those wary of Hindu consolidation.

The Congress party is aware that it lost the 2014 General elections so terribly due to massive Hindu consolidation in favour of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Therefore, its malice towards the Kumbh is only to be expected.

The Congress party has displayed time and again that despite their outward show of deference to Hindu faith, they don’t truly respect any of our traditions and beliefs. Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s Temple Run was only a calculated move to derive political benefits and not a genuine sense of piety. After all, Congress is the same party that questioned the existence of Shri Rama and one of its senior leaders also attempted to delay the proceedings of the Ram Janmabhoomi case in the Supreme Court.

The recent barrage of negative propaganda against Kumbh ought to make us all wary. The restrictions on firecrackers during Diwali succeeded only because a great many Hindus had bought into the propaganda against the festival and did not resist it enough. The goal of propaganda is to make the population pliable so that the establishment’s decision does not face too much of a resistance. And we are all well aware about the anti-Hindu nature of the establishment. Tharoor’s tweet, too, ought to be seen in that light.

‘Stooping so low as to make a false statement raises questions about purpose of your visit’, Manohar Parrikar to Rahul Gandhi in a scathing letter

Reacting to comments made by Rahul Gandhi on his meeting with Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar, the former defence minister has sent a strongly worded letter to the Congress president. Yesterday Rahul Gandhi had met Parikar in Goa. Talking about the meeting later at a rally, Rahul Gandhi had claimed that Parrikar had told him that Parrikar had “nothing to do with the new Rafale deal orchestrated by Mr Narendra Modi to benefit Anil Ambani”.

Reacting to that statement, Manohar Parrikar says in the letter that he feels let down that Rahul Gandhi has used the visit for his ‘petty political gains’. He says that “in the 05 minutes you spent with me, neither did you mention anything about Rafale, nor did we discuss anything about/related to it”.

The former defence minister further clarified that the Inter Government Agreement between Indian and French government and the procurement of the Rafale jet is done as per Defence Procurement Protocol (DPP). He stated the aircraft is being procured following all standard procedures keeping national security as top priority.

Parrikar also writes that paying a courtesy visit and then stooping so low as to make a false statement for petty political gain raises questions about the sincerity and purpose of Rahul Gandhi’s visit.

The full letter can be viewed below:

Vatican priest Hermann Geissler, who handled sex-abuse cases quits after being accused of sexual abuse by a former nun

0

In a major embarrassment to the Vatican Church and Pope Francis, Vatican priest Hermann Geissler, who was appointed to handle sex-abuse cases within the Catholic Church has quit from his position two months after being accused of sexual abuse, reported Washington Post.

According to the reports, Hermann Geissler, who was the Chief of staff in a Church Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, has been accused of sexual harassment by a former nun named Doris Wagner-Reisinger. The former nun of the Church had earlier accused an unnamed Vatican priest of making sexual advances towards her during a confession session in 2009. Doris Wagner later had identified the priest to be Hermann Geissler forcing him to resign from the post.

“Fr. Geissler decided to take this step to limit the damage already done to the Congregation and to his Community,” the office stated.

Last week, Doris speaking to the media had said that, with the help of a canon lawyer, she reported to doctrinal congregation officials in 2014 that the priest had propositioned her. Doris said that Geissler assigned himself as Wagner’s confessor and used it to groom her for abuse.

“After the accusation, I got a response that stated that Father Geissler had admitted, and had asked pardon, and was admonished,” said Doris.

Doris added that “He would keep me there kneeling in front of him for hours, and he would tell me how much he liked me and that he knew that I liked him and even though we couldn’t marry, there would be other ways. He tried to keep me back and kiss me, but I fled from the confessional,” she said.

Doris also revealed other incidents of rapes committed against her by another priest of the community after he had come into her room one night in 2008. She said she felt confused and powerless to resist him and added that she did not tell anyone about the assault because she feared the community would “blame me.”

Wagner also said it was “ridiculous” and “symbolic of the church’s attitude toward perpetrators” that Geissler remained in the high-ranking position within the church.

Interestingly, the rape accusation against Geissler comes just before days before Pope Francis of the Vatican Church abuse prevention summit, a global meeting of Catholic bishops to discuss steps to prevent clerical sex abuse. Francis’ decision to hold an abuse prevention summit comes in the light of the Catholic Church facing a grave crisis triggered by a series of clerical sexual abuse scandals and explosive allegations against the Pope of being complicit in the cover-up of abuses by predatory priests.

Government rubbishes media speculations about full budget, clarifies it will be presenting Interim Budget

0

Putting the speculations about the kind of budget the union government will be presenting, today the Finance Ministry clarified that it will be ‘Interim Budget 2019-2020’. The ministry has issued a one-line clarification saying, “This Budget will be called Interim Budget 2019-20 and therefore, don’t have any confusion on this issue.”

For the last several weeks, there was intense speculation in media that the Modi government will be presenting a full budget instead of an interim budget. In an election year, the government presents an interim budget, or a vote on account, for the remaining term of the government, and the new government after the election presents a full budget for the remaining term of the financial year. Therefore, the reports of a full budget had created a controversy.

The reports that government is considering a full budget is being circulated by media for the last several weeks. Even earlier today, certain media houses had reported that Modi government will present a full budget.

Reacting to media reports, the Congress party had attacked the government for planning to present full budget. It had said that the NDA-BJP government does not have the electoral mandate and legitimacy to present six full budgets in five years.

But all those media reports have proved to false after the clarification from ministry today. It is also important to note that while media was spreading the news about a full budget, the provisional calendar published by Lok Sabha had listed the budget as Interim Budget, which will be presented at 11 AM on February 1.

Lok Sabha calendar listing interim budget

The invitation sent by the ministry to media for a photoshoot with the finance minister ahead of the budget presentation also lists is as interim budget.

Invitation for budget photo-op

Due to the ongoing treatment of Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, the interim budget will be presented by Railway Minister Piyush Goyal on February 1, who was given the additional charge of Finance Ministry.

QNet: All you need to know about the scam, the company’s association with Times Group and bonhomie with Congress leaders

Former Karnataka Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah has had his fair share of controversies.

In the run-up to the Karnataka Assembly elections, merely days before the state went to polls, Sambit Patra of the Bharatiya Janata Party alleged that Siddaramaiah had received an expensive Hublot watch, alleged to be worth Rs. 70 lakhs, from Vijay Eswaran of QNet.

QNet, formerly known as QuestNet, GoldQuest and QI Limited, is a Hong Kong-based multi-level marketing (MLM) company founded in 1998 by Vijay Eswaran and owned by the QI Group. It has been banned in several countries and under investigation for alleged financial fraud.

In India, as well, the Bombay High Court made some scathing observations on the matter. While rejecting the anticipatory bail of five accused in the QNet scam, Justice Mridula Bhatkar observed, “The motto of the company ‘sell more, earn more’ appears very attractive and innocuous. However, this motto is fully camouflaged. The company stands on a basic statement that people can be fooled. Thus, the true motto is ‘sell more earn more’ by fooling people. In fact, it is a chain where a person is fooled and then he is trained to fool others to earn money. For that purpose, workshops are conducted where study and business material is provided with jugglery of words, promises and dreams. Thus, the deceit and fraud are camouflaged under the name of e-marketing and business.”

The High Court stated further, “It has very grave and serious impact on the economic status and mental health of the people on a large scale. On considering parameters of section 438 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, I am not inclined to protect the accused. It won’t be out of place to mention that such circulation is required to be stopped. It is necessary for the prosecution to take injunctive steps against this business activity, which is prima facie, illegal. Though by stopping this business, a large group of people may get financially affected, however, it will save larger groups of people from becoming prey of this activity.”

MoneyLife reported that in a detailed secret report in 2012, the Serious Frauds Investigation Office (SFIO) on QNet, the agency has called such MLM schemes run by overseas operators as “a potential threat to national security.”

The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Mumbai Police made its first arrest in the case in the August of 2013. The agency was probing a case of suspected fraud. Later, the same month, the EOW froze 6 bank accounts of the company which had a balance of Rs. 46 crores. It had registered a case of cheating against the company and its office bearers on the 16th of August.

However, the firm has been under the scanner of Indian police since at least 2008. It was reported in 2008 by Times of India that the Chennai Police was looking for the extradition of Eswaran from Malaysia to India and there were at least 7 cases filed against the company.

Tamil Nadu Police had, in fact, registered a case against the company in 2009 for cheating people by selling gold coins and other articles at exorbitant prices claiming that they are limited edition products.

Earlier this month, the Minister of State for Corporate Affairs, P.P. Chaudhary told the Lok Sabha that 12 complaints received by the SFIO against QNet were forwarded to the Registrar of Companies for necessary action. He further asserted that the ministry had ordered an investigation into the company in 2010. He said, “The ministry had ordered an investigation into the affairs of Goldquest International and Questnet Enterprises India (now known as QNet) and assigned the same to the SFIO on July 28, 2010.”

Siddaramaiah met Eswaran in September 2013, at the World Economic Forum in China. He was one of the many investors that Siddaramaiah met to woo investments into the state. Therefore, the Congress leader met Eswaran at a time when his company was being investigated by various Indian law enforcement agencies for alleged fraud. He was the prime accused in the case as well. The whistleblower in the case, Gurpreet Singh, has also accused Siddaramaiah of shielding Eswaran. Gurpreet had alleged that his wife had been defrauded of Rs. 30,000.

The former Karnataka CM is not the only Congress leader who is associated with the company. Nalini Chidambaram, the wife of former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram, was a legal adviser to Goldquest International Limited. Recently, the CBI had filed a chargesheet against Nalini Chidambaram in the Saradha Chit Fund Scam.

It’s not just politicians that QNet has been linked to. In September last year, Newslaundry reported that the company became one of the sponsors for multiple primetime shows on Times NowMirror Now and ET Now—all English channels owned by the Times Group.

The company has been accused of committing a fraud of hundreds and hundreds of crores. In 2016, a chargesheet was filed against Padma Bhushan recipient Michael Ferreira and 30 others in connection with the case involving a Rs. 425 crore fraud by the EOW of the Mumbai Police. In 2014, Pushpam Appalanaidu, the Managing Director of QNet, was arrested at the Chennai International Airport following a lookout notice from Andhra Pradesh Police.

Numerous other people have been arrested in connection with the alleged fraud. As of 2019, however, the matter is sub-judice. QNet, for its part, has denied all allegations of wrongdoing.

Leave Manohar Parrikar alone, Rahul Gandhi

Bhagavad Geeta teaches us that it is dharma not to attack an enemy when he was disarmed or asleep. Equals are to fight equals on equal grounds. That the battles should be fought on fair principles of chivalry, sportingly.

As the battle for elections warms up, Rahul Gandhi seems to have tossed the rules of the war out of the window.

To quote Ramdhari Singh “Dinkar”,

जब नाश मनुज पर छाता है,
पहले विवेक मर जाता है।

When the destruction of a man is inevitable, the conscience of the man is the first to die.

Indira Gandhi may have killed democracy, Rahul Gandhi has killed basic human decency. Congress President Rahul Gandhi yesterday paid a courtesy visit to the ailing Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar. Parrikar, who was the Union Defence Minister before taking charge as Goa Chief Minister has been recovering from pancreatic cancer. While Rahul Gandhi said that he was on a personal visit and Congress even confirmed that the dubious Rafale tapes were not discussed, Rahul later claimed that Parrikar had nothing to do in the new Rafale deal ‘orchestrated by PM Modi’ to ‘benefit Anil Ambani’. This came a day after he tweeted alleging that Parrikar is ‘in possession of explosive Rafale secrets’ which give him power over the PM.

So here is what happened. Earlier this month, dubious tapes emerged which had alleged conversation between Goa Minister Vishwajit Rane and a journalist where the former is claimed to be saying that Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has Rafale files in his bedroom. Both Rane and Parrikar had rubbished the tape and called it doctored. Rahul Gandhi tried to corner the Prime Minister in the Parliament over these tapes but was not allowed to do so until he authenticates these tapes in writing and takes responsibility for the same.

Rahul Gandhi did not get the tapes authenticated and did not take any responsibility but continued with the allegations. On Monday, he raked up the tapes again, casting aspersions that former Defence Minister Parrikar is perhaps blackmailing the Prime Minister to stay in power because of the ‘explosive secrets’ he is privy to regarding the Rafale deal. Next day he goes to meet Parrikar, calls it a personal visit, does not discuss Rafale deal or tapes but just hours later cooks up a claim attributing it to Parrikar.

Parrikar, who is recovering from pancreatic cancer, and is putting his heart and soul in serving the nation despite his health not cooperating, is used as a pawn by Rahul Gandhi because he could not fight on facts any longer.

This is not the first time he has shown lack of human decency. In December, Rahul Gandhi had politicised unfortunate deaths of politician and judges along with encounters of criminals to further an agenda. Rahul Gandhi had shown how no one really ‘dies’ in politics, but they are kept alive to score political points later.

Similarly, by lying blatantly and trying to implicate a man suffering from cancer because he is losing the battle after even Supreme Court cleared the allegations, Rahul Gandhi has given a glimpse of how he has inherited the ruthless streak of his grandmother, who had murdered democracy when she was losing the battle by imposing Emergency.

In the mad rush for the make-or-break elections, for him and for Congress before the grand old party gets pushed into oblivion, Rahul Gandhi seems to have killed his conscience. It is time Rahul Gandhi leaves Manohar Parrikar alone and lets him battle his problems with the positivity that he has been living with. It is time Rahul Gandhi stops discovering new lows everyday.

Hizbul-Mujahideen warns people about former IAS officer Shah Faesal’s ‘drama’, calls him a fodder of India

0

Former IAS officer Shah Faesal, who resigned recently to join politics, has now entered the radar of terrorist organisation Hizbul-Mujahideen. The terrorist group reportedly has alleged Faesal of being a “Fodder of India”, and also appealed to citizens of Kashmir to boycott the polls. In the wake of this, Jammu and Kashmir police have raised the security of the former civil servant.

The threat comes days after Faesal took a plunge in electoral politics and started crowd-funding his campaigns. He has vowed to start an “independent political journey” and “stand-up for the poor, marginalised and dispossessed” in the terror-torn state of Jammu and Kashmir. He had resigned from Civil Servies on January 9, citing the alarming rise of “Hindutva” forces and “unabated” killings of Muslims in Kashmir and India. He had entered Civil Services in 2010 after he topped the UPSC exam.

“India has hatched a plot to make the elections successful. They are using Shah Faesal as fodder to execute their plans. Our appeal to the people is to stay away from polls. If you vote for Shah Faesal, India will claim that entire Kashmir is with them. Please do not get misled by Shah Faesal’s claims about ‘azadi’ and democracy, which is nothing but a drama,” says a poster circulated on social media platforms, purportedly authored by Hizbul. The message also said that Shah Faesal’s claims of ‘Azadi’ and ‘democracy’, are nothing but a sham.

The message further says that, if Faesal was indeed a well-wisher of Kashmir, he would have joined terrorist organizations like Dr Manan Wani, Dr Sabzar and Dr Rafi. Manan Wani was PhD scholar from Aligarh Muslim University who had joined Hizbul Mujahideen and was later eliminated by security forces last year. The letter says that people like Manan Wani and others knew that gun is the only solution to the Kashmir problem.

“We want to tell Shah Faesal that what you can do in our ranks, cannot be done to stay in the company of non-believers.” The letter added. The police, however, has not verified the origin of the message, and are still investigating it. Faesal has not commented on this yet.

The alleged statement from Hizbul comes days after Faesal’s appeal to people to give up violence, as it only leads to “graveyards”. Ghulam Rasool Shah, Shah Faesal’s father was gunned down by terrorists in 2003.

He was earlier speculated to join National Conference after he was welcomed by Former Cheif Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah. However, he later clarified that he will not be joining any mainstream political outfit, and will only do what the Kashmiri youth wants him to do. He has initiated a mass contact programme, mainly aimed to engage with the youth.
