Sitaram Yechury rejects Mamata’s name as the Prime Ministerial candidate of the Mahagathbandan

CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury while addressing a joint rally of the CEI and the CPI in Ludhiana said that his party will not accept Mamata Banerjee as the Prime Ministerial candidate of the Mahagathbandan, reports Amar Ujala. Yechury said who will be the Prime Minister will be decided after the elections.

Although CPI(M) and TMC are part of the Mahagathbandan out of compulsion to prevent BJP coming back to power, they are bitter enemies in the state of West Bengal. In 2011, Mamata Banerjee had grabbed power in the state, ending the 34-year long rule of CPI(M) government in the state. Therefore, the communists can’t back Mamata Banerjee as the alliance candidate for the post of Prime Minister, even though none of the CPI(M) leaders is eyeing the post themselves like leaders of other parties in the grand alliance.

The proposed Mahagathbandhan, a bunch of leaders with personal ambitions, is finding it difficult to agree on the name of its Prime Ministerial candidate. While some leaders want this decision to be made after the elections, there are others who have already proposed some names with some proposing their own names.

Last year DMK President M K Stalin had endorsed the name of Congress President Rahul Gandhi as the PM candidate. Even Rahul Gandhi himself had expressed the desire to be the PM candidate if other opposition parties agree to it. Raising serious objections on the name of Rahul Gandhi as the PM candidate, the Trinamool Congress had said that the decision will be taken after the 2019 General election results are out. However, Mamata Banerjee has not shied away from expressing her own intentions to be the PM candidate.

Next in the line to reject Rahul Gandhi’s name was NCP supremo Sharad Pawar, who had also expressed ‘happiness’ over Rahul Gandhi not being in the race for the post of Prime Minister. Joining the cacophony was the Bahujan Samaj Party which, while projecting its supremo Mayawati as the PM candidate, came out with a unique reason to oppose the candidature of Rahul Gandhi for PM’s post. The Party said that Rahul Gandhi cannot be the Prime Minister as his mother is of foreign origin.

Recently Samajwadi Party was seen putting up posters of Akhilesh Yadav as the PM candidate in Lucknow. The posters read, “We trust in Akhilesh- The country needs a new PM”. The latest joining the band of aspirants is former BJP leader Yashwant Sinha who when asked about who in his view was the closest person to have the abilities to be the PM, said that the closest was him.

The race for the PM candidate does not seem to end and is rather being joined by a new aspirant with each passing day.

Pakistan will resume peace talks with India after elections, says Pakistan’s Minister of Information

Minister of Information of Pakistan Fawad Chaudhary has said that Pakistan will resume talks with India only after the results of 2019 General elections are out as it is “useless” to talk to the current government, reports Gulf News.

“It is useless to talk to them (India) now unless there is some stability. We will move forward once the new government is formed after the elections. We have delayed our efforts to hold talks with India because we do not expect any big decision from the present Indian leadership,” Chaudhary said.

When asked about which Indian leader would suit Pakistan when it comes to peace talks, the Minister refused to take any name and said that it does not matter for Pakistan. “We will respect any Indian leader and the party elected by the Indian people. And, we would like to move forward to hold dialogue with whosoever comes into power in India,” the Minister added.

The Minister said that it is not suitable to hold talks right now as there is no stability in Indian politics due to upcoming General elections.

Similar remarks were made by the Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan last year when he said that Pakistan will resume peace talks with India after 2019 General elections as there is currently an “anti-Pakistan rhetoric” in India. These remarks coming from Pakistan are being viewed as an expectation from the other side of the border of a change of government in India.

The mutual appreciation of the Congress Party and Pakistan is an open secret now. Congress President Rahul Gandhi has already received support from the neighbouring country. Congress has also responded to the affection it often receives from Pakistan. Senior Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar had even blamed India for stopping dialogue between the two countries. Congress was also seen promoting a “Modi hatao desh bachao” advertisement in Pakistan.

7. I am ready to step down, they (Congress MLAs) are crossing the line: Karnataka CM Kumaraswamy

The Congress-JD(S) unholy alliance in Karnataka seems to be on the verge of a break up as Chief Minister Kumaraswamy today said that he is ready to step down since Congress MLAs consider only former chief minister and Congress leader Siddaramaiah as their chief minister.

Congress tried to pacify cry-baby Kumaraswamy by sending show cause notice to MLA who spoke against the CM.

8. Siddaramaiah outrages the modesty of Jameela who was questioning him, Congress leaders defend him

In a despicable instance of outraging a woman’s modesty, former Karnataka Chief Minister and senior leader the Congress party snatched at the dupatta of a woman, pulling it away from her body, in an attempt to intimidate her.

At the event in Mysuru, the woman in the video was trying to register a complaint with former CM Siddaramaiah regarding the absence of his son Yathindra, an MLA of Varuna constituency. The woman complained that she was unable to reach Yathindra which angered Siddaramaiah. He reacted by getting aggressive and berating the woman suggesting that the complaint made it seem as if his son had committed a great crime.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has written to Karnataka DGP Neelmani Raju asking for an investigation into the incident.

9. Tulsi Gabbard, first Hindu to run for US president, slams media for maligning her for her religion

The presidential aspirant, Tulsi Gabbard, a Democrat representative from Hawaii, who was the first Hindu to enter the US Congress in 2012 has claimed that she has been made a ‘victim of religious bigotry’ as some media outlets have targeted her over her Hindu name and accused her supporters, who have Hindu names, of being ‘Hindu nationalists’.

Gabbard in her op-ed written for a local publication, the Religious News Services, described the campaign against her and her supporters and donors as “profiling and targeting of Hindu Americans and ascribing to them motives without any basis”.

Welcome to Jinn YouTube: If you think Taher Shah was the worst thing to have come out of Pakistan, think again

YouTube, the most popular video-sharing website, is undoubtedly one of the most entertaining websites on the Internet. It has content on almost every topic under the Sun: Sports, Science, Philosophy, Politics and pretty much everything else. One can spend hours on the website and yet not get bored of it.

Despite spending a great deal of time on YouTube, however, there was one genre that I had not yet discovered thus far. That region of YouTube, I don’t quite know what to call it, I propose the name for the sake of simplicity ‘Jinn YouTube’ (Jinn YT).

I came across Jinn YT through this India Today ‘fact-check’. The report states, “India Today has confirmed that the video is not of forcible conversion but of exorcism. A Muslim exorcist is performing some ritual to expel “Hindu jinn” supposedly from a “possessed Muslim woman”.”

After a brief discussion with colleagues, I learnt that it’s not a one-off video. There are scores of such videos, in fact, where Pirs, from Pakistan mostly, ‘exorcise jinns’ from apparently possessed people. If you believe Taher Shah was the worst thing to have come out of Pakistan on YouTube, this will definitely change your mind.

One such person, pir Azmat Nawaz Patriata Shareef, even has a verified YouTube channel where he has shared dozens of videos where he is seen exorcising ‘Hindu’ and ‘Christian’ jinns. In one such video titled “500 powerfull hindu jinn Hazri”, a delirious young woman can be seen being subjected to the pir’s unique method of ‘treatment’.
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlGnSdMu370]

From the video, I gained a basic idea about the taxonomic categories of Jinns. They are categorized on the basis of religion, they can be Hindus, Sikhs, Christians and even Muslims. Then, there is ‘jinna’ and ‘jinni’, presumably male and female jinns.

The pir’s binary categorization of jinns on the basis of gender is likely to offend postmodernist feminists at Universities who haven’t yet had the opportunity to educate jinns about the social nature of gender. Some of them will definitely be triggered by the fact that the pir isn’t aware that there are an infinite number of genders and simply assumed the gender of the jinn which is a micro-aggression and could have triggered the jinn.

The pir also asks the girl if Hindus are honest or dishonest to which the girl promptly replies that Hindus are dishonest. Despite the apparent micro-aggression, the jinn appears to be remarkably well mannered and obeys the pir completely.

Ultimately, the girl reveals that the jinn was sent by Kali Maata, the Hindu Goddess Kali. She had been praying to the Goddess for three weeks. Ultimately, the Jinn requests the pir that he be converted to Islam after which the pir makes the girl recite the Kalma and converts he/it/her to Islam. In the end, after being converted to Islam, the girl loses her consciousness at which point the video ends.

It’s not just one jinn that the man has converted to Islam. In another video titled “Hindu Jinn Accepts Islam at Patriata Shareef, Alhamdulillah”, another jinn suffers the same fate. This jinn appeared to be more aggressive and not like the whiny one in the previous video. He screams and rants but obediently admits that he is a ‘Kaafir’ and begs the pir to be converted to Islam. The pir in the wish grants it its wish.
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXJyKuy3Xbs]

It peaked my curiosity and upon visiting the website mentioned in the video, I realized that he is not the Pakistani version of Kamaal R Khan but appears to be widely respected in the community.

His website reveals that he is based out of Pakistan and contains a whole lot of misinformation which reveals that the country is still stuck in the medieval ages despite the great advances made in the fields of psychiatry and psychology. He lists depression, anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) as symptoms common to “Magic, Evil Eye and Jinn Possession”. He also claims traumatic phenomena such as infertility and miscarriages as such symptoms.

As one can see, these are all very natural occurrences that are much better explained with basic common sense. At one point, one of the symptoms listed for Jinn possession is “Being violated sexually by a jinn”.

Pir Azmat Nawaz is not the only such man on YouTube. There is another one, Abdullah Baba Welfare Trust, based out of Karachi, Pakistan. This one promises a ‘Free Umrah Tickets Giveaway’ if you subscribe to their YouTube channel.

In the video, the ‘Baba’ threatens the ‘100 years old scary Hindu jinn’ and intimidates it for the entire length of the video.

There appears to be one where the video claims it was recorded in Wadala, Mumbai. The process was pretty similar to the ones shown in the Pakistani videos where a man wearing a skull cap is seen talking with a man who is apparently possessed by a ‘jinn’. Apparently, the jinn in this one was earlier a Hindu but converted to Islam at some point. For a jinn, this one was remarkably well behaved as well.
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S50dRVWZV9U]

In related news, 36% of Pakistani adolescents are reported to be suffering from anxiety and depression. 14.3% of young students are reported to be suffering from Bipolar disorders as compared to the global average of 2.4%. Prevalence of Schizophrenia and substance abuse disorders is high as well. As per one report in a leading Pakistani daily, around 50 million Pakistanis are suffering from common mental disorders. To make matters worse, there are only a few hundred mental health care professionals to deal with the menace.

The problem is hardly surprising considering the fact that Pakistan is a country prone to terrorism. Terrorism can have devastating effects on the country’s population including their mental health. Apart from that, the genetic risks posed by parental consanguinity may contribute to the distressing levels of mental health issues as well.

Jinn YT, I discovered today, has a lot of content and the jinns in most of them are Hindus and to a much lesser extent, Christians. While there’s nothing to suggest that there’s any evidence for the existence of Jinns (Duh!), there appears to be plenty for religious bigotry, entrenched mental health issues and a toxic mixture of the two. In the absence of adequate infrastructure to deal with its mental health problems, Pakistan appears to be relying on such dubious pirs to solve its psychological issues. On the face of it, it appears that they are aggravating the issue enormously instead of offering any solutions.

It would also appear that these tactics of exorcising “Hindu jinns” where the “Hindu jinn” often says it has been converted to Islam, might be used for forcible conversion. The atrocities faced by Hindus in Pakistan is quite well known. And given the stereotypes prevalent in Pakistani society where even Jinns are categorized as Hindus and Christians and depicted as evil which stems from Islamic fundamentalism, it’s hardly any surprise.

Imran Khan, nicknamed Taliban Khan, may boast of ‘Naya Pakistan’ but this Naya Pakistan appears to be as entrenched in religious bigotry as it has been since its conception.

Amit Shah: For Congress OROP means ‘Only Rahul Only Priyanka’

0

Addressing a rally in Himachal Pradesh, BJP president Amit Shah gave a new definition to the abbreviation OROP, and attacked the Congress party’s dynasty culture and its decades-long inefficiency. Referring to the recent elevation of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in the Congress party, he said that OROP means ‘Only Rahul Only Priyanka’ for the party.

Amit Shah said that while the OROP implemented by BJP is for the benefit of Indian soldiers, the OROP of the Congress party is for only one family. Shah lauded the Modi government for fulfiling the promise of commissioning OROP (One Rank One Pension) for the armed forces veterans while criticising Congress for promoting only the Gandhi family.

“It is the Modi government that understood the pain of soldiers by implementing the OROP scheme that is One Rank One Pension, but Congress also brought OROP but it meant Only Rahul Only Priyanka,” Amit Shah said.

Shah alleged that despite 55 years of Congress rule on the country, the poverty in the country has not been eliminated. It took a BJP government to think about the poors of this country which were hitherto ignored by the Gandhi family-led Congress. Shah contended that after the implementation of Ayushmaan Bharat Yojana, the poor of the country will no longer be apprehensive with the health-related concerns.

Highlighting how previous Congress regimes have ignored and spurned the aspirations of the state of Himachal Pradesh, Shah alleged that while Congress was in power, Himachal got Rs 44,235 crore from the 13th Finance Commission, but the Narendra Modi government has allocated Rs 1,15,865 crore to Himachal for carrying out developmental work in the state.

Taking a jibe at Rahul Gandhi, Shah contended that those who are out on bail in a Rs 650 scam are trying to smear dirt on the Modi government. He further quipped that the Country needs a ‘Leader’, not a ‘Dealer’.

Shah also reiterated the BJP’s stance regarding the Tukde Tukde Gang. Justifying the action initiated against the accused, Shah asserted that those who will chant slogans of dismembering India will be jailed.

Modi supporters cannot be patriots, claims Delhi CM Kejriwal

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal declared his verdict on the patriotism of people who support PM Modi. Kejriwal yesterday posted a tweet claiming that people who support PM Modi cannot be patriots and patriots can never be supporters of PM Modi. He asked people to make a choice out of Modi and the country.

As usual, Kejriwal accused the Modi government of obstructing the construction of schools in Delhi. Blaming the delay in constructing the classrooms in the schools, the Delhi CM said that after four years of fighting his government has been able to start the constructions of 11,000 classrooms in the schools of the national capital.

Though it is usual for people on social media to see the Delhi CM’s obsession with PM Modi, his today’s remarks invited a lot of reactions.

Kejriwal urged people not to vote for Modi and vote for AAP instead if they really loved their children. He warned people that if they voted for PM Modi, he will allow schools to be constructed.

National Commission for Women asks for investigation against Siddaramaiah for outraging the modesty of a woman

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has written to Karnataka DGP Neelmani Raju asking for an investigation in an incident where former Karnataka chief minister and senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah is seen misbehaving with a woman.

Earlier today, in a despicable instance of outraging a woman’s modesty, former Karnataka Chief Minister and senior leader the Congress party snatched at the dupatta of a woman, pulling it away from her body, in an attempt to intimidate her.

The incident took place in Mysuru when the woman was trying to register a complaint with former CM Siddaramaiah regarding the absence of his son Yathindra, an MLA of Varuna constituency to the constituency after winning elections. As the aggrieved lady took the name of his son Yathindra, senior Congress leader Siddaramaiah lost his temper. The woman complained that she was unable to reach Yathindra which angered Siddaramaiah. He reacted by getting aggressive and berating the woman suggesting that the complaint made it seem as if his son had committed a great crime.

Sidaaramaiah reportedly told the woman to shut up and mocked her for ‘speaking as if she is a top leader’. The woman has been identified as one Jameela. Senior Congress leaders had tried to justify Siddaramaiah’s act and even tried to dismiss it by suggesting that the dupatta came with the mic. Even Siddaramaiah’s son has gone on record to state that his father shouldn’t apologize for his conduct. He said that he shouldn’t have lost his cool but there’s no need for an apology. Yathindra went on to claim that the aggrieved lady belongs to Congress party and added that she was an ardent follower of former CM Siddaramaiah.

15 cadres of Bodo terror outfit convicted in 2008 Assam serial bomb blast case

0

The special CBI court in Guwahati today delivered its verdict in the serial bomb blast case which had rocked the state of Assam on October 30, 2008. Out of 22 people named in the chargesheet, 15 were presented in the court, and all of them were  convicted by the court.

The list of convicts includes Ranjan Daimary, chief of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), a banned extremist organisation. The court will pronounce the sentence for the convicts on January 30. All the accused named in the case are NDFB cadres. While the 22 persons have been named in the chargesheet, only 15 were convicted as 3 of them have died in encounters with security forces, and rest 4 are absconding.

Assam was hit by a series of bomb blasts on 30th October in 2008, with at least 10 blasts that took place in Guwahati and other towns in lower Assam. The blasts occurred at Guwahati, Barpeta Road, Bongaigaon and Kokrajhar. A total of 81 persons lost their lives in the blasts. Three bombs went off in Guwahati on that day, at Ganeshguri, Panbazar and the parking lot of CJM court.

Timers were used to trigger the blasts, and all the blasts took place within a span of 30 minutes. High amounts of RDX or other plastic explosives like C4 were used in the attacks.

Initially, it was suspected that jihadi elements were behind the blasts, as Bodo terror organisations had not done any major activity for a long time during that period, and Jihadi terrorism was on the rise. But after starting the investigation, police concluded that NDFB was behind the blasts. Police had found evidence NDFB chief Ranjan Daimary had given the orders for the attacks.

NDFB is an armed separatists outfit seeking a sovereign Bodoland for Bodo people. While Assam saw widespread protests from various Bodo organisations demanding a separate Bodo state during the 1990s, NDFB wanted a separate country for the community. It conducted several terror activities in that decade. The demand for separate state reduced after the formation of e Bodoland Territorial Council in 2003. Gradually the militant activities also came down and NDFB entered into a ceasefire agreement with the government in 2005. According to the agreement, NDFB members were kept in designated camps protected by security forces, and they were required to give up their arms.

Along with that peace talks stated between the group and the government. But apparently Ranjan Daimary was not happy with the progress of the talks, and that’s why he planned the serial blasts in 2008. After his name came up in the case, the group split into two, pro-talk faction NDFB(P) and anti-talk faction NDFB(R). NDFB(R) split further in 2012 when I K Songbijit formed a NDFB(S), which is the most dreaded faction at present.

Ranjan Daimary, who was out on bail, was arrested immediately after the verdict of the court.

Dinesh Gundu Rao, President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, attempted to justify Sidaaramaiah’s shameful behaviour by suggesting that the dupatta came along with the mic.

Interestingly, Jameela, the woman seen in the clip, speaking to the media said that she was not aware regarding the frequent visits of MLA Yathindra to the constituency. I heard that he was visiting the constituency frequently, but I was not aware regarding his visits. No Congress worker informed me regarding his visit. I had to register a few complaints against some officials, but I was not unable to reach him,” said Jameela soon after the controversy erupted.

Congress members have been frequently accused of sexual misconduct in the past. In December last year, an FIR was filed against Rahul Gandhi’s close aide and son of senior Congress leader Margaret Alva, Nikhil Ala, for sexual harassment and was charged with stalking and sending obscene emails.

Earlier, an FIR was lodged against one Congress IT cell worker named Chirag Patnaik for sexually harassing a female colleague. Patnaik was arrested in July on the charges of 354A and 509 on accusations of breaching the woman’s personal space and indulging in immoral behaviour. He was later released on bail.

The charge sheet also described how Congress social media cell in-charge Divya Spandana had then refused to entertain the complainant’s grave allegations against Chirag Patnaik of frequent misbehaviour.

In October, another sexual harassment case came into light, in which NSUI chief Fairoz Khan had reportedly stepped down from his post following charges of sexual misconduct. NSUI is the student wing of the Indian National Congress. The Executive Editor of National Herald, the Congress mouthpiece, was accused of sexual harassment as well.

Considering the lack of action taken against those accused of sexual misconduct in the past, it appears extremely unlikely that any action will be taken against Siddaramaiah for his grave misconduct.

Congress tries to pacify cry-baby Kumaraswamy, sends show cause notice to MLA who spoke against the CM

The opportunistic Congress-JD(S) alliance in Karnataka appears to be facing troubled waters the ‘cry baby’ Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy talked of stepping down after Congress MLAs reportedly said that they consider former CM and Congress leader Siddaramaiah as their Chief Minister.

An apparently disappointed Kumaraswamy had said that the Congress MLAs are crossing the line. To stop the embarrassment that the Congress-JD(S) alliance is facing due to the internal conflicts of the leaders coming out in public, Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Khadge has urged the Congress MLAs not to react openly to the media.

Following the controversy created by the exchange of remarks within the alliance leadership, Karnataka Congress in-charge KC Venugopal has asked State Congress to send a show-cause notice ST Somashekar, who reportedly spoke against Kumaraswamy, seeking clarification on his remarks.

Kumaraswamy had last year broken down during a JD(S) event saying that he was swallowing the poison of the alliance government. A few days ago he was seen complaining that he was made to work as a clerk in the government and not like a Chief Minister.
