Haryana Elections: Gurnam Singh Charuni, who led the protests against farm laws, loses his deposit

The counting of votes for Haryana Assembly elections is taking place on Tuesday, October 8. Proving all exit polls wrong, BJP is set to achieve majority and form a government in the state for 3rd successive time. Farmer leader Gurnam Singh Charuni, who led the protests against 3 farm laws also contested these elections from Pehowa seat.

However, Charuni, of Sanyukt Sangharsh Party, got a rude shock as he could muster only 1170 votes from the constituency and lost his deposit. Mandeep Chatha of Congress won the seat securing 64548 votes, while BJP’s Jai Bhagwan Sharma got 57995 votes.

Charuni is also the chief of Bharatiya Kisan Union in Haryana. He was one of the leaders of the farmers’ protest of 2020-21 when Delhi was blocked by farmers to protest against three farm laws passed by the Indian parliament.
