The nun, who was allegedly raped by Bishop Franco Mulakkal, and the Kerala state government on Wednesday approached the Kerala High Court to appeal against the Kottayam Additional District and Sessions Court order that acquitted Bishop Franco Mulakkal in the rape case.
On October 17, 2018, Bishop Franco Mulakkal was welcomed like a hero at Jalandhar after he was granted conditional bail by the Kerala High Court. The rape accused Bishop was showered with rose petals and also garlanded by his supporters as he reached the Bishop House around 5 pm.
Although Section 56A of the Indian Evidence Act states that a woman's past sexual experience is irrelevant to a rape case, the trial Court discussed the 'character intent' of the victim to discredit her claims.
Many people, directly or indirectly linked to the case, are not too pleased with the Kerala Court's verdict to acquit Bishop Franco Mulakkal of the Catholic Church in the nun rape case
"The VHP demands that a nationwide inquiry commission like the Niyogi commission should be set up to enquire into the conspiracies of the Church in Bharat and the culprits should be given exemplary punishment", the statement read.
