With several such pleas pending in the court, that demand reservation for "Dalit Christians" and "Dalit Muslims", according to media reports, the government is now mulling setting up a panel to study the condition of those Dalits who convert to Christianity or Islam.
Supreme Court of India issued a notice to the Union Government, asking for their response in a plea that said those Dalit Hindus who had converted to Christianity or Islam should be given the same reservation benefits as extended to the Scheduled Caste (SC) category.
25-year-old Dalit man who had embraced Christianity, Bobbili Bhaskar, has alleged that his girlfriend's family made him convert to Islam, undergo circumcision and changed dietary habits only to have his marriage proposal turned down by girl's father.
The resolution demanding reservations for Dalit Christians appears to be little more than appeasement tactics by one of the new darlings of the 'Secular establishment' ahead of the General Elections later this year. The resolution, however, is nonbinding on the Centre.
