In 2002, 15 Muslim school girls died as they were not allowed to escape a burning school building by Religious Police for not wearing hijab, rescuers were not allowed to help them because 'touching' women was not allowed.
The Deputy Director of Pre-university education (north) said that he found a group of Muslim girls, who demanded that no girls should be allowed to wear their religious symbols and therefore the Sikh girl also should not be allowed to wear the turban.
The plea was filed by two hijab wearing girl students who are pursuing BBA Course in Bhandarkar College, Udupi. The duo argued that there is specific rule in college regulation that permits Muslim students to wear hijab.
