In Islamic countries like Afghanistan, where Sharia is the law of land, hijab, burqa are mandatory and not wearing one is punishable. Women in Afghanistan have been killed for not wearing burqa as per Sharia.
The hijab row in Karnataka has taken an uglier turn with incidents of stone-pelting and violence being reported from various parts of the state on Tuesday.
It is time to move beyond simplistic virtue signalling on the issue of Hijab and analyse the issue without bias. We owe it to the pioneers of feminism.
No one disputes the right to wear a hijab or a burqa at a Madrassa, but wearing them in a public school, where pupils from various socioeconomic backgrounds and religions study in the same room, is not justifiable.
