Former UPA Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde inadvertently admitted that during the Congress-led UPA era, the fear of terrorism in the valley was such that even the country’s Home Minister was scared of visiting Srinagar’s Lal Chowk.

Meeting Ashraf Azad at Srinagar Airport, PM Modi told him, "Azad Saheb, your hard work has paid off. Many people had come to the gathering."

Narendra Modi said, "Today there is peace. You can go there fearlessly in a group of hundreds."

Earlier, Congress had said Rahul Gandhi will not unfurl the Indian National Flag at the Lal Chowk in Srinagar as it was 'RSS agenda'.

"It is Congress who has divided Bharat in the past. With what right is Rahul Gandhi coming here to meet Kashmiri people. He has done nothing for the state. Where was he when lakhs of Kashmiris were dying. This is all sham, a lie," one of the protesters said.

“We do not believe in the agenda of the RSS to hoist the Tricolour at Lal Chowk,” said Congress MP Rajni Patil
