On April 11, Mamata Banerjee downplayed the rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl in Nadia’s Hanskhali village by insisting she had a love affair.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has recently courted controversy after she tried to downplay allegations of brutal rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl as a 'love affair' gone wrong.

Mamata Banerjee said, "In Bengal, we tolerate things but it doesn't mean that you will cross all limits...Bengal is soft, TMC is soft, isn't it?"

"TMC people thrashed our security with bamboo sticks. They are trying to ensure that the polling agent does not enter the booth", said BJP candidate Agnimitra Paul on April 12.

"She does not deserve the CM post if she is making such comments about a victim who has been violated," Nirbhaya's mother said.

"There was a love affair for sure, her family knew about it, and their neighbours also knew about it. Now if a girl and a boy love each other, I cannot punish them”, said the Bengal CM about the minor girl in Nadia who was allegedly raped and killed.
