The family members of the girl were harassed when they went to file a complaint at the Mahishamari police station. The ill-treatment triggered the locals, who then hit the streets in protest.

On 19th August, propaganda portal The Wire watered down the incident and called the attack on Hindu student merely as an 'injury'. Despite being confirmed by the police later that day that the Hindu student succumbed to injuries, The Wire did not edit the report.
