Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma on Wednesday said that the Assam government's priority to focus on the marriage reigstration bill and its next step is to ban polygamy.

Devoleena Bhattacharjee said that the thought of having multiple marriages sounded cringe and that the TV industry was not doing the right thing by promoting such relations to the newer generation.
“He has not treated the first wife and the second wife equally as required under the provisions of Islamic Law. Under Islamic Law, the husband is entitled for Polygamous marriage, however, he has to treat all the wife equally," the court observed.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has clarified that no state government employee can enter into a second marriage without the approval of the government.

The Expert Committee, formed to examine the legislative competence of the State Legislature to enact a law to ban polygamy in Assam, has submitted its report
